Jolie In Iraq For UN Refugee Mission

Note to world leaders: Next time you need instant access to foreign dignitaries and top military brass, forget the usual protocols. Just send in Angelina Jolie.

Hollywood's globe-trotting leading lady swooped into Baghdad on Thursday to highlight the plight of Iraqi refugees, gaining an audience with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, the American Embassy said.

On her mission as a U.N. goodwill ambassador, Jolie also met with Iraqi migration officials to stress that there needs to be a coherent plan for the more than 2 million internally displaced Iraqis who are beginning to trickle back to their homes amid a recent lull in violence.

"There's lots of goodwill and lots of discussion, but there seems to be just a lot of talk at the moment," Jolie said in excerpts of an interview aired on CNN.

Jolie mingled with American troops during lunch at a dining facility in the heavily guarded Green Zone, which houses the embassy and Iraqi government offices. She grabbed a red plastic tray at the mess hall, collected her lunch and sat at a long banquet table to eat _ her fork tines down, of course _ as flashbulbs from soldiers' digital cameras lit up the wall behind her.

During the CNN interview, Jolie said the fate of Iraq will have an impact on the Middle East for years to come.

"And a big part of what it's going to affect," she said, "is how these people are returned and settled into their homes and their community and brought back together and whether they can live together and what their communities look like."

oh and by the way, i think that Hollywood owes all the families of ousted actors & actresses because of their "little innuendo's" a huge apology for ending their careers like they did. today they actually pay people to continue and make "icons" of their virtue!! maybe they can repay those done in stars for revenue lost! personally i believe that the stars are in the payroll of the public.

Ps. Africa is a brilliant continent and we hope that the jolie pitts have their babies elsewhere!! how about HOME??

my my children. why are you getting so upset about the truth? aren't all americans about the truth? the "whole" nation voted for the current president and the shit he created for your country! the movies and tv shows which get bought by foreign countries are all about the TRUTH. is being moral not truthful? are all americans totally against all grains of respectability? from the sound of the comments i think i might have hit a grain that does not sit well?? breaking a marriage is ok - its a natural occurrence. maybe a crash course in manners, morals & etiquette is to be had by all of ya. your mommies failed to provide you with the necessary respect. how sad - america = sad place full junkies, greedy old people in politics, mommies & daddies swopping partners and the children!! alas dysfunctional. AND THEN the samaritans come in and advertise. Look at Mandela - he never once, not even once, sold his pictures for "charity"!!!! now aint that sumthing!!! hava gr8 day kiddies!!!

Just another fine mess it seems; Gen. David Petraeus, and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, will start to wonder why Angelina Jolie can discuss the situation in Iraq more intelligently than Bush & Condi ever did.

Angelina is extraordinary. She has said she was fearful of working for UNHRC, going to Washington to bring attention to areas of crisis, because, who was she? What education did she have? How could she articulate to powerful people? But, she said she did it anyway because her need to help was more important than her fear and insecurities.
She meets fear and goes through it. She commits with fears intact. And if you listen to some of her longer interviews you are struck by how intelligent and careful she is...doesn't just go shooting off at the hip. controls her comments with the goal of helping rather than blaming, and that has got to be a hard thing to do.

Jolie's visit as a UN Ambassador focused on the refugees...the millions of displaced Iraqis that NOBODY but NOBODY of prominence in this country has even brought up for discussion over the course of this war - (and least of all the media because they're busy covering Britney). This country doesn't even bother to COUNT the displaced and dead Iraqis and never have since the beginning of the conflict - which demonstrates how much really the welfare of the Iraqi people was ever a motivating concern of this policy. She speaks of the children and the destroyed future they face for no fault of their own; how whole families are shattered; how it will take generations to mend the ruptures in Iraqi society. I give her credit for dealing with stark and horrific realities that everybody else wants to pretend don't exist or don't matter, probably knowing she'd be slammed for doing it.

Interesting points. Don't we have homeless children in this country? Don't we have people living in the street who could benefit from a helping hand from Angie and Brad. But, of course, that wouldn't get this much publicity would it?

In the last year, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have given hundreds of thousands of dollars of their own money and raised millions more to build housing for the people left homeless as a result of the levee failures in New Orleans.

I think she should run for office.

She's committed & smart. She puts her money where her mouth is. She is qualified, and she's a citizen. And she has every right to speak out about causes that touch her.

This may shut up the useless denigrators who doubtless are sitting on their a**es and picking their noses about the world's problems.

Maybe they could if the paparazzi would leave them alone....Too bad the paparazzi didn't follow them to Iraq and report to the rest of us. Perhaps Britney could go and the whole world would see what's happening in Iraq!

I stand corrected on Pitt. He got involved with a high profile item...but it's better than nothing. Good for him. Did he build houses for the other "weather" victims...over the past years????

I wasn't aware that America had 2 million refugees.

(And by the way it's inner-city, moron.)

Ever think about taking more of those anger management pills your mommy gives you.

Happy now that someone yelled/paid attention at/too you?

Thanks for the spell check mommy...and as far as refugees try taking a look around America...you can start with homeless vets, then go to runaways and finally check out the homeless who can't afford their medical bills...especially the mentally ill.

Then you can just roam the streets...hey, right here in Seattle...I see Homelessness everywhere...it's called Pike Street. I don't even want to look around the real cities in this country for "refugees"...they are out there jack ass.

Conservatives don't want attention brought to the millions of lives that have been ruined by the people and policies they've backed. It follows their MO exactly. That is to completely shut their minds of off from the negative consequences of their ideas and actions. Even if it's something as overwhelming as a few million refugees. You'd think that church going folk would have a hard time ignoring that. Or at the very least not shoot the messenger who's trying to get the world to focus on their plight.

Right there have never been wars or refugees during democratic administrations, right?

Oh, except Franklin Roosevelt's incarceration of thousands of innocent japanese americans in concentration camps because of their race.

And, Harry Truman dropping the bomb and frying thousands of women and children [also japanese].

And, JFK and Johnson escalating the our presence in Viet Nam from a few thousand advisors to half million.

And, JFK invading Cuba [called preemptive strike today].

And, the attacks on the embassies, warships and the World Trade Center during Bill's reign. None, by the way since 911. Nevermind, you don't have to say thank you.

Yes, you democrats have a proud heritage.

Wow! I can't believe the negative comments made about Angelina Jolie going to Iraq. She's a UN ambassador for refugees and children. I think a trip to Iraq is part of the job portfolio. She has certainly had a lot of on-the-job training for her role in the UN. I think it's great that someone like her is willing to listen to refugees, look them in the eyes when they speak, touch their hands, etc. They aren't just statistics on a piece of paper for politicians or war planners to toss about. They are people. The fact that she's also an actress makes her serious dedication to her UN job wonderfully refreshing. While others are getting their nails done, attending a fashion week in Paris or Milan, entering rehab, or whatever people in that position do, she's out there doing a hands-on job. Good for her! She's obviously respected by many powerful people; not for her acting abilities but for her humanitarianism. I don't understand how people can judge her so negatively. Her children seem happy. I applaud their family for being citizens of the world. I guess they've gotten over the isolationalist belief that what goes on the world won't affect them or their children's futures. It's too bad people who would criticize her efforts haven't had that epiphany.

Would we be talking about 4 million Iraqi refugees, with two million on their way, or already back home, had she not gone? She did her job - to focus attention on the issue - and she clearly knew what she was talking about.

Anyone commenting should view the whole video. She is calling our government out on THE WORST HUMANITARIAN CRISIS OF OUR GENERATION. I think she was highly diplomatic in her comments all things considered - but she made the point clear- our government is responsible for the chaos refugees are forced to return to and how we handle that will determine global stability, and we have to handle that NOW. Our criminal admin was hoping it would "go away until after the elections" She just f$#%d them on that.

Go Angelina.

The proper French way to set the table with your utensils is with the fork tines down. Probably to contrast her adherence to refinement while in an unrefined setting of dining with the troops.

I understand that this is the european way to hold the fork, but it is completely irrelevant to the story and I find it strange that the author attempts to use it as some put-down or something. Just really stretching for something, ...not sure of exactly what though
