Mitt Romney To Suspend Presidential Race

Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign on Thursday, effectively sealing the Republican presidential nomination for John McCain. "I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," Romney told conservatives.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney told the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Watch it:

Romney's decision leaves McCain as the top man standing in the GOP race, with Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul far behind in the delegate hunt. It was a remarkable turnaround for McCain, who some seven months ago was barely viable, out of cash and losing staff. The four-term Arizona senator, denied his party's nomination in 2000, was poised to succeed George W. Bush as the GOP standard-bearer.

Romney launched his campaign almost a year ago in his native Michigan. The former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist invested more than $40 million of his own money into the race, counted on early wins in Iowa and New Hampshire that never materialized and won just seven states on Super Tuesday, mostly small caucus states.

You were a pretty decent guy when you were governor of a very liberal state, but as a presidential candidate you failed because you tried to change your stripes and out nasty Rush Limbaugh as the toughest conservative imaginable.

It did not work, nobody bought into your phony, I am the meanest and most thoughtless Republican candidate in the race, Bullcrap.

You understand, as do we liberal democrats, that Republicans pride themselves on being selfish, mean-spirited, every man for themselves, thoughtless human beings.

You failed their test because they suspected you might secretly harbor thoughts of being kind to old ladies and poor folks.

Perhaps if you had not tried to sink below the most degenerate conservatives in the country and acted like Republicans did before Reagan made it fashionable to pull the rug out from under the middle and lower classes, and purported yourself more like old school Republicans such as Lincoln Chaffee, you might have made some traction?

But now all I can say is Don’t let the door hit you…..

Now you have left Republicans with the Manchurian candidate, a senile old man who never met a war he did not wholeheartedly embrace and if elected would lead this country on a journey to hell.

Fortunately he is no match for our heavy weight champ, Barack Obama.

Romney ran as a social liberal and fiscal conservative in Massachusetts. He promised to be a bigger supporter of gay rights than Ted Kennedy.

I wonder why Rush never told his idiot followers that?

He wanted to run like Bush did in '04, not knowing neo-conservatism is dead. I thought it was bizarre! I used to say to people that he was spending all this money in a strategy that was bound to fail. It's like pushing for a Britney spears song to be popular now!

As far as Obama, he has to show he can fight and won't be another Dukakis'88 or Kerry '04, to be worthy of your "heavy weight champ" compliment.

I am still waiting for the Dem's to say we will abolish:

The Patriot Acts.

The War Commissions Act

The Protect America Act

Presidential directive #51.

Then I might start to believe.

Then prosecute all those involved in the War crime that was the preemptive invasion of Iraq.

Then I will believe.

For the second time, Bush is going to give tax rebates to Americans. What does that tell us? It tells us that the Bush administration has accumulated such a massive surplus of money, that it just doesn't know what to do with it anymore.

The corporate Republicans I work with are truly puzzled by this conservative revulsion against McCain. As long as you shill for corporations and favor upper class tax cuts financed by deficit spending, what's the problem here?

The problem, of course, is that there's not enough corporate Republicans to win elections, at least legally.

The party better placate its mouthbreathing base, and soon. This fracture is so big even the feckless Democrats can't screw this up.

Bush and the Repubs ran up 3.5 trillion in deficits in the last seven years. The Boy Genius just proposed 400 billion more in deficits.

The smart money I know in Connecticut is investing in gold, silver, and foreign currency.

It's probably impossible to overestimate Democratic incompetence, I'll agree!

But 2004 was a squeaker only achieved by a timely and orchestrated coalition of corporate Repubs, war hysterics, and social conservatives whipped into a froth. Now the economy is tanking, "terror!" didn't even help Guiliani, and there are no more gays to bash.

Clinton-hatred is all they got left to keep them together. It's not enough when so many can't even stand their own nominee. Remember "Bush-hatred isn't enough?"

In this election, the Republicans are finally reaping the effects of three decades of pandering to various unrelated constituencies. Nobody noticed the contradiction under Bush, because everybody knew he didn't have a clue, and that these interest groups were all using him.

This year, the Republicans started out with four contenders, each of whom represented a different constituency, but pissed off one or more of the other groups. There was McCain the necon, Romney the capitalist/fiscal conservative, Giuliani the security statist, and Huckabee the Christian fundamentalist. Now that conservatism has pandered itself out of a definition, you have all these various groups each thinking that it represents true conservative principles.
