Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign on Thursday, effectively sealing the Republican presidential nomination for John McCain. "I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," Romney told conservatives.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney told the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Watch it:

Romney's decision leaves McCain as the top man standing in the GOP race, with Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul far behind in the delegate hunt. It was a remarkable turnaround for McCain, who some seven months ago was barely viable, out of cash and losing staff. The four-term Arizona senator, denied his party's nomination in 2000, was poised to succeed George W. Bush as the GOP standard-bearer.

Romney launched his campaign almost a year ago in his native Michigan. The former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist invested more than $40 million of his own money into the race, counted on early wins in Iowa and New Hampshire that never materialized and won just seven states on Super Tuesday, mostly small caucus states.

McCain: "I am a proud American. Ronald Reagan was a proud American."

Giuliani: "I was like my hero Ronald Reagan on nine eleven."

Romney: "Ronald Reagan was not my hero until I realized that since nine eleven, it would be important for him to be my hero. That's why I love Ronald Reagan today."

The surprising thing is that he lasted this long to begin with! Romney is the typical politician who'd say anything and everything to get elected. When he was running for governor he ran far to the left of Republicans, when he ran for the candidacy he ran to the right of conservatives. Had he gotten the nomination, he'd running to the middle again.

All in all, I'm sad to see him go, he'd have been easier to beat in the general election than McCain.

Maybe next time Mitt will be true to himself and get his policies sorted and not be flip flopping like Kermit The Frog trying to be all things to everyone!

He will learn a lot from the experience!

On super tues I noticed that his wife Ann didn't look too happy with Mitt's announcement that he was staying in the race. Guess the wife had a little talk with him!!!

Those conservatives are obsolete and cannot see a revolution in politics happening even as we speak; history is in the making. Like Rush, conservatives are idiots and dinosaurs. Obsolete.

20' th century ideas in a new century where a new paradigm will dominate: Energy Scarcity (end of cheap energy); Climate Change; a shift from Consumerism to a Recycling Economy; Lower Incomes; Overpopulation and Population Movements; Religious Extremism; and of course, lots and lots of WAR.

--A 37-year-old American businesswoman and married mother of three is seeking justice after she was thrown in jail by Saudi Arabia's religious police for sitting with a male colleague at a Starbucks coffee shop in Riyadh--

If that'd taken place in Iran, the bombs would be flying. Literally. Bush's family friends can do no wrong. They pour millions into the coffers of terrorist organizations every year and Bush just tip-toes through the tulips with 'em.

Romney has given us a peek at the framing the right will be using against the Democrat.

of course it was the pro-Iraq-invasion people who surrendered to terrorism by not finishing the job against al qaeda in Afghanistan.

This is why Hillary voted the way she did on the war. Honestly the votes she cast would not have made a difference. But by voting the way she did, and aligning herself with McCain and the other hawks, they have very little ammo to use against her on this front. This is politics. It was a smart political move. This is exactly why the Dems need to fall in line behind her. They can beat the GOP in November. They have already done it twice. Unless you want 8 more years of Republicans Gone Wild I strongly suggest we back Hillary. Otherwise we are going to lose. The MSM is so pro Republican that they will give free advertising to just about any crazy swift boat ad you can think of. I fully support Obama as VP. Bill will be at the UN probably so there is an opening.

smart move for one's political career but a lot of people died because of it.

no excuses. frankly it's sick that anyone would think it's alright to go along with the status quo when it means people are going to die. anyone who would play politics at the expense of others' lives is a piece of shit opportunist who deserves nothing good.

It is what they have used all along... Now we know what they used against the Congress...

How in the world can anyone with any intelligence not understand they lied us into war to fill their own pockets and prophecy.

I agree. Just once I want to hear a Democrat say to a Republican, "YOU GUYS are the ones who waited until we were attacked to take action against terrorism. YOU are attacking our freedoms, AQ couldn't care less whether or not we're free. YOU have made us weaker and more vulnerable to attack. YOU have created more terrorists."

But no, they'll probably just adopt the Republican rhetoric and buckle... Unless Obama is the nominee. Then we'd see some real courage.

Mormon Mitt's main act as liberal governor of Massachusetts was to pass a compulsory state law requiring everyone to have health insurance. It bears a close resemblance to Hillarycare.

How come all you red meat cons supported this liberal candidate?

Rush told them to.

Plus, Romney said all the right things.

He said he was a real conservative. He said it a lot. A lot of fools bought it.

One other interesting little detail is that Bain Capital, Mitt Romney's outfit, owns Clear Channel Communication, which hosts Rush and the other talk show hosts.

Limbaugh was basically campaigning for his boss.

Yeah, shows you just how bankrupt the wingnuts really are, to have to cling to Romney as their "true conservative". Well, when you can't get Fred Thompson to wake up long enough to run a campaign, it's tough.

I was ok with this guy until reading, as an excerpt from his speech:

“If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror,”.

Man, what a load. Attention voters, we can't install another believer in perpetual war, in our House, the White House. This election cycle needs to be the nail in the coffin of the NeoConservatives. Like the Soviet system, their system must fall.

I do not believe that another Clinton administration will
move US far away from the neocon/neolib corporatism
that has held sway over Washington for forty years now.
Ike warned US about the MIC takeover that BushCo has
so ineptly exposed. It is well past time for real CHANGE!

I include the Carter administration because he was kept ineffective by GHWB's manipulations of the Iranian hostage crisis as well as blamed for the after war recession, post Vietnam.

This time we have to pursue the rule of law and convict the traitors and war criminals, least they return again. The Bush crime family must face justice!!
