Mitt Romney To Suspend Presidential Race

Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign on Thursday, effectively sealing the Republican presidential nomination for John McCain. "I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," Romney told conservatives.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney told the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Watch it:

Romney's decision leaves McCain as the top man standing in the GOP race, with Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul far behind in the delegate hunt. It was a remarkable turnaround for McCain, who some seven months ago was barely viable, out of cash and losing staff. The four-term Arizona senator, denied his party's nomination in 2000, was poised to succeed George W. Bush as the GOP standard-bearer.

Romney launched his campaign almost a year ago in his native Michigan. The former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist invested more than $40 million of his own money into the race, counted on early wins in Iowa and New Hampshire that never materialized and won just seven states on Super Tuesday, mostly small caucus states.

Note to my fellow Dems. When you call anyone who SUPPORTS a military presence in Iraq a "war mongerer," you are playing directly into the conservative hands by alienating the military. You can disagree with their reasoning but conservatives actually do believe that the war on terrorism has to be fought in Iraq. Make the case why that is wrong but taking two words "war mongerer" to say it makes you out to be everything the right WANTS Americans to believe.
Not everyone in support of the war is a war mongerer and not everyone against it wants to "retreat for defeat."

Labels are for soup cans.

Seafare:

You should teach "talking points" lessons.

If you support a military presence in Iraq, you need to enlist.

It's what every smartass poster in here has been saying to anyone who ever advocated a responsible and methodical withdrawal in Iraq to prevent further destablization in Iraq.

I have advocated what HRC is proposing for Iraq a number of times. I was told to enlist.

Besides, I thought the very presence of our troops was causing the destabilization? That's what I was told. How could pulling them out too quickly make it worse? If they are the very cause?

Nope. Enlist. That's the answer to anyone who believed we needed to keep our forces in Iraq until we could bring them home safely and responsibly.

No need to enlist my friend, I'm retired military and two-time Iraq "visitor."

It would make sense not to assume much of anything these days. I served for four Presidents.

We invaded a country for no reason, (Except perhaps defense contracts and oil.) killed a lot of people, and wasted a lot of money.

Bush's latest budget calls for a 400 billion dollar plus deficit to finance the Iraq War.

Forgetting about morality for a second, the cost of being the World's Policeman is wrecking the dollar and messing up our economy.

I think the Elephants would rather fight against someone as polarizing as Hillary, than Obama who'd get the independent votes that McCain is after. Not only that but he truly represents change, is less tied to corporate interests and offers a stronger contrast to McCain because he voted against this catastrophic and unjust war from the beginning. People are hungry for change, not for more old-time politics where you have Hillary flipping on issues like driver's licenses for immigrants etc...

For one thing he's awakened thousands of new voters that had felt disfranchised by flip-flopping and has inspired a new generation to stand against the politics of hate and intolerance, a support visible not only in votes but unparalleled donations. In the past he worded with both Democrats and Republicans to help working families get ahead by creating programs like the state Earned Income Tax Credit, which in three years provided over $100 million in tax cuts to families across the state ... of course the Republicans only want tax breaks when it comes to the greedy heads of corporations who don't need the taxbreaks as much... He has also been the lead voice in championing ethics reform that would root out Jack Abramoff-style corruption in Congress. And has also made it possible for the people to track campaign contributions and see who is working for the people or for private corporate interests...As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan. Under Bush.... well you know what happened in veteran's hospitals.Recognizing the terrorist threat posed by weapons of mass destruction, he traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world. Such diplomatic efforts are what is going to bring peace to this world... not launching wars based on lies and illegally occupying them for a 100 years as McCAin suggests. The war is making Halliburton and many corporations great profit... that's why many supporters of the republican party are for it. Never mind the fact that there was Al Qaeda in Iraq, or WMDs or the fact that we deal with other dictators around the world, and have put them in place in countries like Haiti while boasting of the fight for "freedom" and "liberty" ...

I'm not sure the elephants plan to stampede towards Obama. Even the states he won in the primary are unlikely to elect a Democratic president. It is more likely that McCain will extend his reach, plying the security issue to the older voters on the Democratic side.

Resolving the war is the real issue. The unjust war is a practical reality.

It pains me to write this but I see no realistic scenario that has Obama defeating McCain. Barack supporters, like Arianna, bring up the vision of the former standing on the same stage as the latter and people seeing youth vs. age but in a Presidential election, people don't see age as a negative, they see it as wisdom and keen intellect needed during a time when the system is broken and who better to "fix it" than the one guy who has been saying "it's broken" for years now? Moderates have always wanted McCain to run successfully and now they have their wish. The best thing that could of happened for Obama would have been a Romney ticket. I think my fellow Dems are going to be shocked in November...wait and see. Disenfranchised Clinton folks will probably go with a third party candidate and McCain will slide in based on his support from independents and moderates who have long favored the guy.
Obama fans can choose to spin a McCain vs. Obama race anyway they choose but McCain is not Richard Nixon...he will expose Obama for the political infant that he is. Do not underestimate him. His own party did and look at what happened.

Why would a moderate run from McCain to side with the most liberal Senator in Washington? This is the most overhyped yet incorrect observation about an Obama vs. McCain race. Independents are notoriously political mavericks. If the party wanted to put the candidate who would take votes AWAY from Mccain, it would stand to reason they would nominate the person who most closely RESEMBLES him...certainly not one the polar opposite.

Not really "we love terror!".

More like "We think terror is terribly overestimated. We think we can reach an accomodation with radical Islam. Maybe, if we agree to stay out of Muslim nations altogether and give them Israel, they'll leave us alone. If we elect a Democrat, we can convince them that we're lovable again."

More like that.

Nit Romney, man of many contradictory beliefs and former corporate raider, appeared before the Conference of neofascist conservative lunatics today to tell them what they wanted to hear...just like "Ronnie" McCain is doing. Ronnie will now be focusing on how truly conservative he is when it's his turn to address this revolting mob. These lunactics will never foreget the first modern doofus who stooged for them: The overated Ronnie Reagan.

Those of us who endured Reagan down through the incompetent buffoon now hanging out in the White House know what conservatism is all about: Low taxes (for the wealthy and corporations), cut spending (for safety net programs, medicare and medicaid, but not for corporate welfare, subsidies and bailouts),undermine but preferably destroy labor unions, close or severely limit access to the courts to the average American and their trial lawyers seeking to hold corporations responsible for their defective products, and get rid of minium wage and allow the free market in charge of the Social Darwinist ideologues to control wages. I would hope that the blue collar working stiffs who called themselves Reagan Democrats learned the hard lesson of having a corporate stooge like Reagan and Bush II in the White House.

To millions of us, any clown beating his breast and boasting of being a real conservative and what that implies to us is about appealing a character as a child molester.
