Obama: Swiftboating Can't Stop Me

CBS   |   February 7, 2008 05:02 PM

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Sen. Barack Obama could withstand any last-minute "swift-boat" attacks from Republicans on his race or past drug use because winning the grueling contest for the Democratic nomination will make him the "toughest, baddest candidate on the block," he tells 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft....

...Asked by Kroft if he will be able to endure attacks from "swift-boating" Republicans who may use his race or his youthful drug use against him, Obama replies, "Whoever wins this Democratic primary...they're the toughest, baddest candidate on the block. And if I beat Senator Clinton, then I will be more than capable of beating the Republicans. And if I don't, then she'll be the nominee and [race or past drug use] will be a moot point."

Here is a pithy summary of what worries me about Hillary Clinton (from Fareed Zakaria in the Feb. 11 Newsweek):

She is highly intelligent, has real experience and is an attractive candidate. But she is terrified to act on her beliefs. In fact, she seems so conditioned by what she sees as political constraints that one can barely tell where her beliefs begin and where those constraints end.

Here is a pithy summary of what worries me about Barack Obama (from James Wolcott's Vanity Fair blog):

I can picture President Hillary in the White House dealing with a recalcitrant Republican faction; I can't picture President Obama in the same role because his summons to history and call to hope seems to transcend legislative maneuvers and horse-trading; his charisma is on a more ethereal plane, and I don't look to politics for transcendence and self-certification.

or this comes out

Alleged illegitimate son of JFK in Vancouver?
Vanity Fair has killed the story pending further proof of a Kennedy connection, reports New York Post
Denise Ryan, Vancouver Sun
Published: Thursday, February 07, 2008
It's not often that our city makes it into the New York Post's notorious Page Six gossip column, but Post columnist Richard Johnson ran an item today claiming that a "tall, handsome" 40-something man, reputed to be the illegitimate son of John F. Kennedy, is living in Vancouver.
Johnson quotes unnamed sources claiming that Vanity Fair was about to publish a story on the love-child.
The story, written by David Friend, was allegedly spiked after a "courtesy call" to Ted Kennedy.
The man in question reportedly bears a striking resemblance to the 35th president of the United States, assassinated in 1963, and was born to a Texas woman who had been introduced to JKF by Lyndon Johnson.
The New York Post reported that Vanity Fair has killed the story pending further proof of a Kennedy connection, such as a DNA test.
Vanity Fair spokesperson Beth Kseniak was unavailable for comment.

Actually I like this tough part of Obama, the "street" part of him. He will not be swiftboated because he's the "baddest"...(LOL!)
Finally a Dem who will get tough with the Republithugs..."you wanna play nice?..we play nice...you wanna get rough?...we play rough".
God I'm loving it! If Bam Bam shows some backbone against those crooks I'd give up my Hillary support and vote for him, YES!! Finally someone we can feel pride in...not the snivelling, pleading, fatalistic crybabies of old("Please like me...oh, please. Let's work together pretty please. Can't we all just get along?") They dig up drug use, he digs up sex scandals...pull no punches, take NO prisoners!

Like it or not, as DEMS we have one chance in November. Her name is Hillary. Her and Bill can take the GOP slime machine and throw it right back in their faces. Barak won't know what hit him. You want Swift Boating, I'll give you how Republicans will Swift Boat Hillary:

Hillary were you aware that your husband the Governor was using State Troopers to lure women into hotel rooms and dropping his pants with even trying to rap to them. Why did you not stop him.

Hillary aren't you ashamed that you made money in White Water and all the investors lost their pants. How did you manage to stay out of prison while all your associates including the Governor and others went to prison.

What about taking money from the Chinese foreign nationals which is illegal by law.

That is just for starters, plus did you know that the Secret Service records were all made available to the Republicans, they know all the where abouts of both Bill and Hillary. Explanation, they know the women and their address of all Bill Clinton's bimbos, since he left office.

Try those for starters.

This same basic stupid argument is coming from both camps. I am so fucking sick and tired of it.

*The GOP is fragmented and will not come together in time for November. Either Barack or Hillary will defeat McInsane.

*The GOP is going to smear the hell out of either candidate, but they are both professional politicians and will handle it.

*Stop trying to tell me that one of these candidates is more experienced than the other because it is simply not true. And if experience matters so much now, then why didn't we vote for Biden, Dodd, Kucinich, or Richardson?

Sorry for the rant, I'm just getting so blitzed by the lame fucking vanilla talking points that both camps have been cutting and pasting at this site over the last few days... think for yourselves, people.

Obama won't be "SWIFT BOATED", we'll see dark streets, hip hop gang members hangin' on the street corners, bumping rap music thumping in the background, the filty lyrics as a faint backdrop, bitch this, 'ho that, F this, F that.

Then the voice over (courtesy of rove's brain).

"Barack Obama is a man of color, his people have wanted change for a long time. America gave them a chance, civil rights, equal opportunity, welfare, a hand up, not a hand out, affirmative action - some took advantage, many did not. Is this who you want in the white house, is this who you want representing all of us? A champion for the people of color, a nation at rise in these uncertain time, is this our priority?"

Then a picture of grandpa McCain, white, smiling, American flags all around him, and reassuring words that he will protect us, from the terrorists AND the ever threating blackness that Barack will be sure to represent - - -

Just watch -

Hillary/Barak is the ticket. I like Barak a lot but I am not taking any chances in November. The MSM hates Hillary and that tells me they FEAR HER. Vote for Hillary and put Obama on as the VP. Keep dreaming you can't be swift-boated. They will run Operation scare Honkeys and Beaners.

The republicans don't give a shit about black voters. They don't rely on black votes to get elected. Unlike Obama and Clinton who both need record black turn outs to win.

Operation Scare Honkey will expose any and every dealing Obama and his butt boy Rezko were ever involved in. All of the idiotic things Obama's "Black racist preacher" has said will be spread through the white christian churches in the south.

Operation Scare Beaners include repubs and big business spreading money and threatening jobs to foster even more discontent among Latinos and blacks.

With McCain's record as Mr Amnesty, he will get a chunk of Latinos in the southwest. The republicans will run their southern strategy nationwide to pick up white voters. This bs about conservative sitting out is crazy. Repubs will reunite after getting McCain behind closed doors. It goes something like this " bend over Senator McCain and all night he says thank you Sir may I have another right winger please. The right will be satisfied with the supreme court picks McCain promise to make for them and only them.

Tuesday was a MASSIVE victory for Obama.

Assuming that I have this right, Clinton got 747 delegates, Obama 744.

That translates to Clinton getting 50.1%, Obama 49.9%. Clinton needed to beat Obama by AT LEAST 10% to claim victory. The front runner title is a hazard, it must be defended, and Clinton did not manage it. She bested Obama by a fifth of a percent.

The Clintonian narrative of inevitability is utterly shattered. It was a double edged sword and has come back to wound Clinton, perhaps fatally.

Meanwhile, Obama was able to deliver on his narrative of momentum, hugely so. Had he picked up two more delegates, he would have got more than she did. And consider his fundraising numbers for this year. There is no way anybody can rationally claim that Obama does not have the advantage at this time, and that Clinton looks to be going down to defeat.

I don"t assert that there is anything evil or ugly about trying to convince the world that your nomination is inevitable. It is the natural thing to do, to try to be seen as the prohibitive favorite. But it has come back to bite Clinton in the ass.

And no, the purpose of this post is not to "bring people together" it is to argue that Obama is now the front runner, and that he is the victor of Tuesday"s contests.

Either engage in the argument or piss off. Clinton had built an image of invincibility, and Obama came withing 2/10ths percent of tying. That is a massive victory for Obama. Clinton's narrative of inevitability is utterly destroyed.

If Obama had earned two more delegates, he would have had more than did Clinton.

And Colorado and Minnesota are pretty significant states.

It was a huge day for Obama. Never again will anyone suggest that Clinton is inevitable. And then there is all the money!
