Romney Drops Out Of Presidential Race

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:25 PM ET

Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign on Thursday, effectively sealing the Republican presidential nomination for John McCain. "I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," Romney told conservatives.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney told the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Watch it:

Romney's decision leaves McCain as the top man standing in the GOP race, with Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul far behind in the delegate hunt. It was a remarkable turnaround for McCain, who some seven months ago was barely viable, out of cash and losing staff. The four-term Arizona senator, denied his party's nomination in 2000, was poised to succeed George W. Bush as the GOP standard-bearer.

Romney launched his campaign almost a year ago in his native Michigan. The former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist invested more than $40 million of his own money into the race, counted on early wins in Iowa and New Hampshire that never materialized and won just seven states on Super Tuesday, mostly small caucus states.

Keep reading. Read more reports from the CPAC conference here, including the attacks on John McCain in the speech introducing Romney, and the tearful reaction to Romney's announcement.

Hey Mitt can I buy your surfboard from you? You know the one that old surfer guy Dana Rohrabacher gave you? Remember, you were gonna ride it all the way to the White House? Hey dude, sorry 'bout the Wipeout.

Frankly, I had credited the Repub corporate overlords with more sense than this. It's a foregone conclusion that the party can't win without mobilizing Christian conservatives to vote against their economic self-interest. What did they expect, fronting a Mormon and now McCain?

This is the kind of stupid self-destructive behavior that one normally associates with Democrats.

I'm loving every minute of it.

Didn't Hannity say that if McCain got the nomination, Sean would come out of the closet and finally declare his true sexual orientation?

I seem to remember hearing that.

Vote Republican or lose Iraq? I thought Iraq was for the Iraqis. I thought the surge was all about the Iraqis taking over. Perpetual war. Thanks, Republicans! Good riddance to all of you in November!

It's "vote repiglican or die". They tried that in 06.

Talk radio is already talking about their chances in 2012. Rush and Sheyawn are absolutely shrill. Hilarious.

The repugs have conceded the presidency and their next best bet is to undermine Clinton or Obama and set up an "I told you so" campaign for 2012.

The real upcoming battle is for congress.

Huckabee can't possibly think he can beat
McCain, so when do they get to hook it up?
John loves to hug those Baptist preachers!
Sorry if that paints a bad mental picture but
'least now he can get his arms around Huck.

Between that gut Huckabee is carrying around lately and McCain's short arms, I don't think it is possible.

Oh poor mitt. Now, he'll have to go back to being a businessman and laying off all his workers due to his boyfriend Bush's crappy labor policies.

KA-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMM !!!

ROFL.

Romney's introductory speaker, Laura Ingraham, set the stage declaring: "An obsession with endless bipartisan compromise does not keep us free."

What does that say? Lets look at that statement more closely. If we remove the words “obsession” and “endless.“ the meat of the statement emerges:

“bipartisan compromise does not keep us free."

The argument contained herein is that FREEDOM is purchased with rigid adherence to conservative and Right-wing ideology. That the bipartisanship promised by Obama will destroy our FREEDOMS, as if democracy and the participation thereof was something dirty.

That FREEDOM will be best protected by those who take our freedom away to think for ourselves and to negotiate our politics within a system set up by our forefathers specifically to protect LIBERTY.

That we must have a government that dictates rigid adherence to conservative and Right-wing ideology.

And that finally is disgusting, the proof that our conservatives are too far right for most Americans; and why McCain displaced Romney as the Republican favorite.

Pretty good analysis. Thumbs up.

Dear (Five) Fighting Romneys:

Now that you'll have so much free time on your hands, you could set an example & demonstrate your devotion to "national service" & the "war on terror" by enlisting in the armed forces.

I'm sure driving a Humvee isn't much different from handling a MittMobile, & patrols & convoys are needed throughout Iraq & Afghanistan.

In addition, you'll be eligible for hazardous duty pay, so you can compensate yourselves for Daddy spending your inheritance on his noble campaign. You see, it is considered a combat zone, after all, although you're all so special & loveable no one would ever harm any of you.

So, not to worry & don't mention it.

Sorry him and his boys support of the war is only by mouth. Like the rest of their chickenhawk party they lack the balls or the spine to defend their views that they so bravely talk about.
