Chrysler to Cut Models, Dealerships

DETROIT — Chrysler LLC could reduce its vehicles and dealerships significantly under a tentative plan called Project Genesis, a Chrysler dealer in Texas said Friday.

The automaker has told dealers that it could cut its number of models by as much as half and reduce the number of dealerships selling its cars by as much as a third in an effort to boost efficiency, according to Alan Helfman, vice president of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep in Houston.

"I think they're trying to get a little leaner, a little more efficient," he said.

Chrysler spokeswoman Lori McTavish declined to comment, but the company said in a statement that it plans to align Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge product offerings under one roof.

"At this point, we have not made any final decisions regarding our dealer optimization or future product plans, nor has the company set any firm timelines," Jim Press, Chrysler president and vice chairman, said in the statement.

Press reiterated during a speech at the J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Roundtable in San Francisco that the company hasn't decided how many models will be cut. He said Chrysler needs to pare down its lineup so similar models don't compete against each other.

The change will save marketing expenses and help dealers become more profitable, he said.

The consolidation should occur within the next 4 to 5 years, Press said, adding that Chrysler's forecasts of product cuts are based on estimates and not set in stone.

"There are no numbers. We don't know how many models we're going to have. No one knows that," he said.

He called rumors that the company might sell off parts of its business "hogwash" and said Chrysler is committed to staying viable as an independent company.

"Our company, our owners, have said nothing to me but build an American icon ... there's no plan to take it apart."

Helfman said it looks like a good step by the company, but he's concerned about how it might be carried out.

He said Chrysler could run into trouble with state franchise laws that in part protect dealers from going out of business.

"We have two of the largest dealerships in Houston," he said. "I'd love both of them to be ... `Genesized,' but tell me how to do it."

Chrysler earlier this month said it was launching a new ad campaign that includes lower prices on 12 of its vehicles. The campaign aims to cast the automaker as a company that's listening to buyers and responding with new features.

Chrysler is undergoing a restructuring after private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP bought a majority stake in the automaker last summer, In November, the automaker said it planned to cut up to 11,000 jobs, including 8,000 to 10,000 hourly jobs and 1,000 salaried positions.

The cuts came in addition to 13,000 cuts Chrysler announced last February, including 11,000 hourly jobs and 2,000 salaried workers in the U.S. and Canada.

More people out of work. Lower U.E. rate.

I am so pleased. Their Service Contract division just bent me over on my service contract and STOLE about $400 out of my pocket with deceptive, punitive and egregious sales tactics. So, they deserve to be cut in half as far as I'm concerned.

Well the Crossfire, PT Cruiser and Magnum are already out the door, and I think the Miata clone is toast. The Aspen is selling very badly, and the new Sebring and Avenger are hideous. The Compass isn't really doing anything but ruining Jeep's reputation, so I think you can start with those models as either already gone, or soon to be.

Although I don't really want anyone to suffer, maybe some of these companies need to do it.

I say it should start at the CEO level as a cut in pay...maybe then they won't have to downsize so much!

In 1967/8 I was working on the line for Chrysler, building kick ass cars (including some of the first muscle cars). There existed an immense pride amongst the workers in the product we were building. One day a bunch of twits descended on the plant with white shirts, high water pants and stop watches. They timed everything we did. A month later the management announced they were upping the production from 60 cars an hour to 70 cars. This increased pace was unattainable and the workers were pissed…we produced crap after that….if I recall correctly about 50% of the cars produced were red flagged and had to go to a holding area to be repaired. Chrysler began its long slide into the mess it is in today the day they let greed take over. Let the bastards melt in hell!

All US auto makers need to do something, there getting their lunch eaten by the more innovative companies. All one has to do is drive past a, say a Ford dealership thats across from say a Honda store and one can see what the problem is! Us companies may make quality cars but they are not perceived that way.

Good idea. Mercedes was heading them down the wrong track on a course with ever bigger gas hogs.
I think they are heading for efficiency. I have found Chrysler engineered cars to be very good. I know they have a new state of the art v-6 coming out to be paired with atate od the art auto shifting manual transmission. Both increasing performance and efficiency.

I've seen this story before. Anyone with interest in the subject, look up the British company Rover. This is almost the exact scenario.

this is a whole lot of nothing. Chrysler has been trying to combine dealerships for the last ten+ years. what we have ended up with is either the desired combination of Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, or very strong stand-alone Dodge or Chrysler/Jeep dealers.

dealers are independent businesses. as the article mentioned, due to state franchise laws, Chrysler cannot force dealers to do anything, which is good. why?

fewer dealers would not change the market for the better. instead of competition, collusion would result, along with higher prices for the customer, and less convenience. instead of that dealer a few miles away, it might be thirty.

I think Mr. Press, formerly of Toyota, would like that; a lot fewer voices of dissent, and more control of the dealers.

a good example would be the big plans Toyota had for the new Tundra last year. being that the one of plants was located near San Antonio (the other in Princeton, Indiana), they wanted to have a big push for sales to ranchers and farmers in the rural areas of Texas. there was one problem: no dealers in those areas, with some dealerships being over 300 miles away. not exactly convenient, is it? their answer (which didn't come to fruition) was to have satellite dealerships in rural areas.

and how many satellite dealerships, you ask? three. for the whole country, with ONE in Texas...and they didn't even follow thru with that.

let me know how many folks would like LESS choice, higher prices, and call it progress, would you please?
