With the race to succeed him reaching a critical juncture, President Bush this morning began rallying the Republican base around its presumptive nominee, John McCain, and in the process tried to define his own legacy for the general election campaign to come.

In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, Bush offered an implicit endorsement of McCain's bona fides as a true conservative in the face of deep skepticism on the right. Although he did not mention McCain by name, the president said whoever ends up being the Republican nominee will represent conservative values.

Soon, the worst president in the history of the solar system will step into oblivion.

On that day, I will listen to the Ninth, drink myself a bottle of Bourgogne and reflect on the past 8 years : Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush, Gonzales, Libby, Wolfowitz. At that moment, I will probably Jacksonpollock all over my rug, but I won't care.

This one photo will save Hillary a fortune in political ad agency fees... all they have to do is hang it on the screen for 28 seconds with "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" playing as the audio bed.

McCain reminds me of a guy that sells crack, or smack for a living, he seems nice enough , but what he sells kills people.

JOHN MCCAIN'S "I WUV YOU, MR. PRESIDNET" HUG...

The Dems could "Swift Boat" McCain with that photo alone, plus the one of him striding through the Baghdad market followed by a U.S. Army company and a fair amount of close-air support....

The first time Timothy uttered that line, was when his wife told him she thought it wasn't a good idea that he went out with the boys Friday night, maybe he should stay home and help her do laundry.

time and place should appear *with* their respective images. it is not at all clear if the hug-a-thon pictured on this page is that same old image of Bush/McCain or if it is a new one.

i'm a bona fide Hillraiser, so, frankly, i can't stand to look at either one of these guys, but i seek clear, clean, constructive communication that enables voters to make an informed choice. we should consider the power of imagery just as seriously as we consider the power of words. this picture, without context, amounts to a "pictorial soundbite" and "soundbiting" is a precursor to swiftboating.

if we want better politics, we should demand better information.

Commentary from a Rove journalist mouthpiece:

"The word is that he (McCain) wouldn't have made the grade as a naval aviator had not his father and grandfather been flag officers, but that's beside the point.

McCain was awarded a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals, two Purple Hearts and a dozen service awards. Unfortunately the narratives for the awards only speak of his having undergone extreme mental and physical cruelties at the hands of his captors, and were described as "boilerplate" and "part of an SOP medal package given to repatriated (Vietnam-era) POWs" by Naval officers Hack interviewed.

The medals were basically given out for being there, not for heroism.

The problem here is not that McCain didn't have terrible things done to him for a long time -- he did. The problem is that neither he -- nor anybody else who was in prison camp -- had a choice about whether they were endangered. But medals for heroism are supposed to be given out for actual heroic action, taken willfully and at great personal risk.

They shouldn't be awarded simply because someone survived an involuntary ordeal.

And didn't survive it as well as many others. McCain was quoted as saying "O.K, I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital" four days after his capture and later signed a confession declaring himself a war criminal. And although McCain refused an early release, the word is that he was ordered to do so by his U.S. POW commander.

It was unquestionably a long, painful nightmare for McCain to log all that time in a North Vietnamese prison and, for that, he deserves genuine sympathy -- the kind of sympathy you reserve for someone who survived a five year battle with cancer. And the experience may (or may not) have made him a better person. But based on the facts, he's not a war hero. And it speaks poorly of him to let his handlers promote him to the public in that way."

The picture is several years old so your argument is a little flat on that point.

Hillary epitomizes the 'anything to win' behavior more than any other candidate.

It does not matter how old the picture is Vogon. It can be a 100 years old and the fact still remains that Bush and the GOP smear machine smeared McCain's service record. They smeared his wife and daughter. Are you telling me that the passage of time somehow diminishes the fact that they smeared his daughter?

You have no counter argument so your excuse is that time has passed so everything is now great. This shows McCain's character. It reveals him to be a man with no morals or conviction. A man who does not give a rats ass about what is said about his wife (whom he swore to protect when he married her). This is the man you see fit to guide America. You want people to follow this mans words on what is moral and just. A real man would have stood by his wife and daughter and told the Republican establishment to fuck off. But hey, doing that would ensure that he would not be President right.

Vogons is right. That picture has been making people laugh 'til they vomit for several years now. It shows quite clearly that McCain's selling out of whatever integrity and decency he may have once had didn't happen just yesterday. Glad you and I agree on that, Vogons.

Regardless of how bad, evil, criminal, etc., we think the GOP is,
our problem now is that they're united and we Dems are divided.
There are seven states voting over the next three weeks w/ half
of the candidates up for grabs this weekend. Following that, the
states of Tx, Oh, Vt & RI vote/caucus on Tuesday, March fourth.

It is imperative that Democrats not go all the way to convention
continuing to fight over who leads the party into the next decade.
We must not allow this to devolve into another, Chicago 1968!

Flip a coin, Obama and Hill are pretty much the same. Wipe out as many repig Congressman and Senators as possible . Everyone is focused on the Presidential race, and not so much on Congress. If there is a fairly even dem/repub Congress, I don't care who the dem is, they won't be able to do anything against the Gestapo Repigs.

24 open Republican seats, though leaders of both parties expect at least a few more Republican retirements as state filing deadlines arrive. The high point for end-of-session Republican retirements is 27 in 1952, according to Congressional records.

"Bu$h steps into race". How ironic. Because after he he was appointed or coronated as "President" by the Supreme Court in 2000, the United States has been doing nothing but stepping in shit the last seven years or so. Very apropos as Dumbya Bu$h and his followers are full of shit.
