With the race to succeed him reaching a critical juncture, President Bush this morning began rallying the Republican base around its presumptive nominee, John McCain, and in the process tried to define his own legacy for the general election campaign to come.

In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, Bush offered an implicit endorsement of McCain's bona fides as a true conservative in the face of deep skepticism on the right. Although he did not mention McCain by name, the president said whoever ends up being the Republican nominee will represent conservative values.

AMY GOODMAN: Do you think this is similar to the attacks on you in 2000, the Bush attacks in 2000?

JOHN MCCAIN: No, I put the attacks behind me. The attacks that were made on me are long ago and far away, and I don’t ever think about them or dwell on them.

AMY GOODMAN: They were very personal, very harsh, and they questioned your war record.

JOHN MCCAIN: And I had to get over it. And I got over it, and I don’t look back in anger. I look back as running for president as the greatest experience of my life.

AMY GOODMAN: It’s one thing to get over it. It’s another to stand with and campaign with the man who did it to you, George Bush.

JOHN MCCAIN: I put it behind me. I put it behind me. Absolutely, we have a very good, friendly relationship.

AMY GOODMAN: Has he ever explained himself to you, why he attacked your wife, Cindy, and your kid?

JOHN MCCAIN: I can only——my discussions with the president are private. Okay? Thanks, good.

What kind of a crawling, power-drunk creep would kiss up to someone who had attacked his family in such a vile manner? What the hell is wrong with McCain?

It is perhaps the blackest mark on his record.
that and copping out on the final torture bill.

If Bush is backing McCain, does he really want such an endorsement? Pres. Bush's job approval ratings according to AP are at 30%! I think the wave of disgust (already exhibited in 2006) will continue on this November...

The only difference from 2006 is that the level of violence in Iraq has tapered off a bit and the urgency to withdraw is not perceived to be as great. Hard to say what effect that'll have in Nov.

I think that's why he didn't even mention McCain's name. He was probably asked not to.

The Republicans are in a complete disarray. They are fighting one another like they are enemies. They are stuck with two terms of the worst Presidency ion history and they are lagging far behind in fund raising. It's going to be interesting to see how the Democrats will blow this election.

They couldn't win the election if they dragged bin laden out of his bunker in crawford or discovered the cure for cancer!

Just look at the voter turnout so far ... it's the whole story!

When the Repubs lose, they'll say McCain wasn't conservative enough.
That's their fallback position.

McCain is hoping that W will be there to burp him
every morning in the Oval Office. Vitter will do the diaper change of course. Right now my wife is knitting some booties for the inauguration. Why don't wee all give him the bootie?

hopefully that support won't include rovian election STEALINGantics ala Fl.[00] and Ohio [04], but since that is the only kind of support Bushco has to give...

Awwww, look at that... McCain laying his head on Bush's shoulder. Touching, isn't it?

The Dems need to promote the backing from Bush, as it will (as some have already mentioned) cause some people to wretch and others to back away form supporting McCain.

If McCain somehow (and, a miracle happens) gets the backing of the Conservatives in the GOP, he may stand more of a chance of winning, but the facts still remain... he is a foolish man for being at this level, against a public sentiment that mostly abhors Bush and all he has stood for. The GOP could suffer immense damage with McCain at the top of the heap since he doesn't appear to represent any of their core values.

McCain cannot win in November in a fractured GOP. He will need more than a hug and support from Dubya. He will need Dubya's machine to rig the whole mess in his favor. That's the only way he can win, as we know the Dems will not sit idly by, taking the mud on the chin and not defend and respond in an appropriate manner.

Poor, ignorant John. Since he has just about tied up the nomination, he should be running from the people who are criticizing him. Their thinking and policy got this country in the bind it is in, and America knows it (except the talk-radio listeners.)
There is a fat chance, with Democratic turnout what it's been in the primaries, that ANY Repug would win the general. The country is tired of it, and if McCain does not want to embarass himself with a 70/30 election result, he needs to RUN RUN RUN to the middle (where he's been on about 3% of the issues.) He should worry about America and not what Coulter, Limbaugh and the dittoheads think/repeat.

Exactly. The support of Bush and the conservative base could actually make his loss 80/20

Yes, we have two brilliant candidates and they have one crazy old man but if we keep it up through the convention, we may all be stuck for another four more years of David Addington and all his friends, still in the White House.

What is really hysterical is that after his re-election, Bush blew off the psycho evangelicals and went his own way to spend that "political capital" he sensed he had after his re-election. We all know how far he got with that.

NOW...the Republicans are whore-pandering to every fringe element under their "inclusive big tent" in order to blunt the big Democratic offensive coming this summer.

To be fair...it is also something to see both Democratic candidates effectively neutralizing Sharpton and Jackson to "leave your number" status.

Perhaps this is the year of the voter...meaning the kooks on both sides of the equation will be reduced to gnashing their teeth in disgust as they are ignored.

The beat goes on.
