Neil Young: Music Can't Change World

BERLIN — Neil Young has a pessimistic message: Music has lost its power to change the world.

The 62-year-old singer brought his new movie, "CSNY Deja Vu," to the Berlin film festival Friday. The film was shot during the 2006 Freedom of Speech tour by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Young, who directed the movie under the pseudonym Bernard Shakey, wasn't making any big claims about its effects.

"I think that the time when music could change the world is past," he told reporters. "I think it would be very naive to think that in this day and age."

Young added: "I think the world today is a different place, and that it's time for science and physics and spirituality to make a difference in this world and to try to save the planet."

"CSNY Deja Vu" intersperses footage from the tour, which featured performances from Young's "Living With War" album, with archive and television news material _ and unfavorable reactions from critics.

"If we didn't do that, it would just feel like a bunch of old hippies up there saying what they thought _ and who cares?" Young said.

Young said he called his fellow band members before the tour and told them: "This is all I'm going to do, I won't be doing anything else and I don't want to sing any ... pretty songs; we can only sing about war and politics and the human condition."

"The goal was to stimulate debate among people, and I hope that to some degree the film succeeds in doing that," he said.

"CSNY Deja Vu" is showing outside the main competition at the annual Berlin festival, which runs through Feb. 17.

Music was a fantastic part or expression of the 60's but it didn't create the mind-set of that time. It was a part of it, though.

The mind-set of people now is quite different: hence the music of nothing worth listening to unless I hear good soul (not the "soul" music put out today)like Marvin Gaye or blues.

I try to get the most from music, and not the most music that I can get.
Music, which is noise, is part of the spiritual being and by what people listen to can give a person a lot of information to catagorize and judge a person for 1st impressions.
But do not exclude the sounds of a forest(with as few sounds from civilization)or the rain or the beach and other places are as good as any piece of music written by mankind.

Please! Generational politics is so repetitive.... What ever happened to UNIVERSALITY? Music is first and foremost a pleasant diversion--only clumbsily a phil. genre!

Neil is oh so right on this one. In the last 20 years media gatekeepers have abused their power by using bad music the same way they do fake news and opinion---to champion society's crooks, might makes righters and lowest common denominators so as depress salt earthy masses.

Can't write message songs when the zeitgeist is mentally ill and moguls sell sounds and not songs. Civilized pop culture has been MIA or DOA ever since advent of rap & hip hop. 60s, 70s, 80s ear candy or classic rock is labeled old school. Now brain dead and tone deaf rule.

I thought the whole point was that pop culture wasn't supposed to be "civilized" if it was going to change the world.

Yes, a lot of hip hop is over-materialistic. But there are still brave voices out there. And let's not over-romanticize the 60s generation. When Young et al were making their best records, the top of the charts was dominated by the Monkees.

"Yes, a lot of hip hop is over-materialistic" by PaxMundis

Pax, hip-hop is off the charts when it comes to materialism. Then throw in the adolescent macho posing, taking women for sex playthings, and violence for the sake of domination, just like in prison. And all made possible by business school graduates who know how to make a buck off of it.

In the 60's, groups like the Monkees and all music like that was for kids 12 years old. Hendrix, Joplin, Cream, etc. were never played on the radio but as a high school kid - they were all we listened to. Neil Young was always there also.

The "60's generation" was not embraced by the majority of young people at the time, but it was the most dynamic thing going.

"i heard Mr. Young sing about her
i heard ol' Neil put'er down
well i hope Neil Young will remember,
a Southern man don't need him around, anyhow."

i think Sweet Home Alabama could be an national anthem for any seperatist Country-- even Israel. i would love to hear that song sung in Yiddish!

"where the skies, they are so BLUE!"

Neil's entitled to a moment of pessimism...but he's so wrong...in fact...it may be that music & poetry and art are the only things that ever change the world. to wit the amazing "and world changing" video clip...Yes We Can...here's the link...

Keep looking for that lyrical miracle that just could be the shot heard round the world!!!! you listening Neil?

The new generation can't win. When they try to do something new, it's not as good as what you did back in the day.

The 60s are done. Get over it.

Thank you for the link. Very cool. Have you ever seen Dave Chappelle's Block Party? There's so much progressive thought in hip hop that gets buried under all the materialism.

music and srt are the beauty of mans soul- whether about joyful things or sorrowful things.
Music still touches my heart and soul and mind and humanity.
Many of Us miss J.Lennon- we could use somone to take the torch NOW.
Many of us have stayed true to our ideals but the organization we invested in have turned to clay. NOW, Useless. Green Peace- usless. ACLU- useless, UN useless, WHO -useless...
Why ...because they have all missed the bigger picture they all should work together to move US forward. We aren't gone- but the ones who claim our memberships have.
Prime Directives...
Human Rights
Human and environmental welfare.
I don't need a thousand memberships to confuse the issues. FOCUS! FOCUS! FOCUS!
(or is that 'Hocus Pocus' by Focus)

How do you account for "rap music"?

music consists of three parts: rhythm, melody, and harmony. Rap music emphasizes rhythm. Other genres have emphasized the other two aspects. Listen to Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" ...today it would be called 'rap'

Bad 'poetry' with a rhythmic distraction to give it impetus....?

I was thinking about what a friend had said. I was hoping it was a lie. . . Don't let it bring you down. It's only castle's burning. Just find someone who's turning. And you will come around. . . Tomorrow see the things that never come today. . . Music can't change the world? Only if you're tone-deaf.

That may be true. I don't know. But still, you have to try.

“CAUGHT BETWEEN IRAQ AND A HARD PLACE”

By: Billy Stone

HE WAS JUST ONE MORE WEEKEND WARRIOR
TRYIN’ TO MAKE ENDS MEET
‘TIL HIS UNIT GOT CALLED UP
NOW HE’S FIGHTIN’ OVERSEAS
BACK HOME HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN
WORRY, WEEP, AND WAIT
CAUGHT BETWEEN IRAQ AND A HARD PLACE

TRADING TROOPS AND TREASURE
ON SOMEONE’S SO CALLED PLAN
OF BLOOD AND OIL AND SAND
LED BY LIES AND BOTTOM LINES
THIS WORLD WILL REMAIN
CAUGHT BETWEEN IRAQ AND A HARD PLACE

WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION I KNOW WHERE THEY ARE
THEY’RE HIDDEN DEEP IN SOME MENS’ MINDS
DEEP IN SOME MENS’ HEARTS
PEACE IS NOT AN ANSWER
WHEN WAR’S A CHOICE YOU MAKE
CAUGHT BETWEEN IRAQ AND A HARD PLACE

These lyrics may make YOU feel good about the Iraq
War but how can you be sure that the rest of your fighting soldiers feel the same way? I would say,"Step
away from your keyboard and talk to many soldiers
before you speak for them."

Until the soldiers start speaking for themselves it can't do any harm to try to speak for them.

So just because he is a musician he shoudn't be in the least affected by world issues? My husband had spent
two years living in Toronto before I met him and he
brought all of his Neil Young albums with him.We were
very young and I was into Motown at that time,we fought
often about musical tastes. As I grew older I started to
understand that Neil Young was always Neil Young. He
had always tried to carry the world's problems on his
shoulders. That is a great concept but I think we have
to at least, sort out our own lives first. My husband still sneaks off for his re-union with his youth as I strut
what is left of my stuff to Marvin Gaye's "What's going
on."

He's right. He knows the scene is dead.
A big focus on science and innovation is indeed necessary to save the planet and our civilization.

We can write new songs (and I do) after we find solutions to some of the epic challenges we and our children are now facing.

When we figure out how to save our asses from the problems we have created and inherited, and ethical, socially responsible practices replace the greed oriented, mass-consumer, trash culture that now prevails, a new scene will emerge amid a new inspiration. A renaissance.

By the way Neil knows, along with Dan Akroyd that UFO's are infact real. Anyone not up to speed on this needs to study up. I honestly don't think it is our government or any secret government entity horse assin' around with super science and breakthrough quantum physics. It is Aliens.
Anyone that reads this and follows up with some research on current events may just encounter some astonishing information that changes their life. Once you know about some of what many have seen or experienced recently you will find yourself on a search for answers. Again I've got your answer, It's Aliens.
I saw my first two UFO's this last summer. It was a very clear night and knowing what many people, all over the planet were witnessing I thought hell I might just see something amazing myself up in that vast dark sky. I was looking up, half expecting to see something strange and soon, sure as can be a brilliant light much brighter than the brightest star cruises across the sky at a very high rate of speed. Fifteen minutes later another object, even brighter, like a small white and gold sun, far brighter than any star and much faster and lower than any satellite soars silently from one end of the sky to the other, west to east. This is no known aircraft, absolutely unlike anything I have ever seen before and I have been a passionate sky watcher all my life.
I'm certain we have entered a new era here.

Art trumps politics. If an artist has a social conscience, it'll show in his work naturally. It doesn't have to be forced or heavy-handed. The intelligent listener will know what to do with it.
