NEW ORLEANS — Democrat Barack Obama suggested Thursday that Hillary Rodham Clinton follow his lead and release her and her husband's income tax returns so the public can see where the $5 million she loaned her presidential campaign came from.

A day earlier, Clinton acknowledged that she had made the loan late last month. At the time, Obama was raising and spending more money than her heading into the round of presidential primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday.

Asked whether he would call on the Clintons to release their tax returns, Obama stopped short of saying they should.

"I'll just say that I've released my tax returns. That's been a policy I've maintained consistently. I think the American people deserve to know where you get your income from. But I'll leave it up to you guys to chase it down," he told reporters on the flight to Omaha, Neb., for a rally.

"I've disclosed my income tax returns," he said. "I think we set the bar in terms of transparency and disclosure that has been a consistent theme of my campaign and my career in politics."

There was no immediate comment from Clinton's campaign.

Obama noted that Clinton is wealthier than he is. Asked whether he would rule out tapping his personal funds to pay for his presidential campaign, he said, "I don't have enough money to drop $5 million into a campaign."

Clinton's financial disclosures, which reveal only broad ranges of assets, place her and former President Clinton's wealth between $10 million to $50 million.

Obama released tax documents last year showing income of more than $991,000 for him and his wife, Michelle. The figure included his Senate salary as well as her income as an administrator of the University of Chicago Hospitals.

From now on let's just make the election like a reality show where they all live in the Big Brother house and we watch them 24/7

So anyone who wants to run next time should start auditioning now and move in to the BB house immediately. Bring your diaries, too. We'll need to publish those.

I love that Bill says self-financing of campaigns is against the spirit of campaign finance and was pissed at the Supreme Court for allowing it, yet the very next month the Clintons drop $5 million out of their personal cash and into their campaign. That is sketchy itself, especially given Bill's post-presidential financial dealings, but the hypocrisy is simply hilarious, just another example of saying one thing and doing another! I think they call that the Clinton shuffle.

Prophet Obama is the same person who cries foul about peoples cynicsm, now he is a paragon of virtue? Now he question Hillary's sincerity? Countrymen, beware of the man who's quick to call others name when it's to his benefit. Obama can not possibly what you think he'll be. The fact is that the kind of changes Obamanites hope he will bring, can only be achieved through a revolution of sort. This man is the greatest Houdini of our generation.

His Iraq war funding voting record

HIs Chenney oil bill voting record?

His lobbist record?

Oil Slick (Again)http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/youve_got_mailers.html

The mailer further charges that Obama "voted for Dick Cheney's energy bill that gives huge tax breaks to oil companies." Obama did vote for the 2005 energy bill to which Clinton refers. But as we've said more than once before, her claim that the legislation resulted in large tax breaks for the oil industry is misleading.

In fact, the bill President Bush signed into law in 2005 actually RAISED taxes on the oil industry overall. The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service said that the Energy Policy Act "included several oil and gas tax incentives, providing about $2.6 billion of tax cuts for the oil and gas industry. In addition, [the act] provided for $2.9 billion of tax increases on the oil and gas industry, for a NET TAX INCREASE on the industry of nearly $300 million over 11 years."

Many subsidies were proposed during debate, but they didn't make it into the final
bill, which contained a total of $14.3 billion in tax breaks, most of which didn't go to the oil industry.

Instead, they benefited electric utilities and nuclear power, as well as alternative fuels research and subsidies for energy-efficient buildings and vehicles.

Clinton has been consistent, however, in her opposition to the tax breaks the bill contained. She voted for the bill that originally passed the Senate, but spoke out against and opposed the final conference bill, objecting to tax provisions it included as well as the deletion of provisions to reduce oil consumption and increase the use of electricity from renewable sources. Obama voted for both bills and lauded provisions regarding ethanol, which is produced in his state of Illinois.

Obama supporters need to check out an unbiased report on disclosure like Open Secrets. He appears to have a bigger problem with disclosure than she does.

Obama:
Full Disclosure $72,332,166 (82.0%)

Incomplete $0

No Disclosure $15,925,900 (18.0%)

Clinton:

Incomplete $0

No Disclosure $9,662,088 (10.3%)

Joe Trippi when interviewed for leading the Clinton campaign had suggested an internet fundraising apparatus like Obama"s and he was eventually hired by John Edwards to lead up his campaign. From Mother Jone"s interview June 29, 2007:

MJ: The next one is a two-part question: What part of the political use of new web tools makes politics more democratic?

JT: Obama just proved it. One hundred thousand people giving 25 or 30 bucks ****(THESE are NOT reported INDIVIDUALLY)**** can out raise a bunch of people going to $2,300 dinners that have an axe to grind because they are oil lobbyists or whatever. If 5 million Americans decided tomorrow morning to give $100 to a candidate ¬that's half a billion dollars. THERE WOULD BE NO REASON FOR THAT CANDIDATE TO TALK TO AN OIL COMPANY, AN ENERGY COMPANY, A HEALTH CARE COMPANY EVER AGAIN.

as an addendum to the analysis, first of all, i was mistaken, huckabee blows everyone away at 27% non-disclosure.

these #'s are a bit misleading w/o taking into effect the % of donations $200 or less.

paul 54% (Largest Internet Donations)
huckabee 33%
obama 26%
mccain 22%
clinton 12%

so yes, technically, obama's campaign has slightly more donor disclosure than clinton's, and is about right on par with mccain's.

dari, since you honored me by quoting me a portion of my post below, if i may offer one small correction to yours:

donors of amounts under $200 are not legally entitled to disclose their identity, however, they are given the option to if they so choose.

additionally, the obama campaign specifically requests that they do so.

that they do not is their choice which they are absolutely entitled to, but i am personally of the opinion that they are doing no good service to their candidate, considering his pledge and promise of transparency and disclosure, by abstaining.

...especially when their collective endeavors total a hair shy of $16 million.

It's clear Obama has no shame.
Seems he has no problem throwing mud at Hillary---causing a further divide in the party. He is the one starting the fight---not Hillary. He is the one that wanted to fight over race-----not Hillary.
I just wish they would fight over gender so that for once, Hillary would have the advantage.

This is a cheap shot by Obama to have the media begin a controversy over nothing again. For anyone with a memory of more than a few months knows that Hillary got a large advance for a best selling book. He probably made around 10M on the book alone. I don't know why Barack needs to stoop so low. It is very unbecoming.

But what is the problem here - didn't they disclose these during the WH years, and wouldn't they do so again? Plus, can someone please tell me why the contributions to a presidential library have to be guearded like a top secret? Have we forgotten Mark Rich and his "library donation"? Plus, wiht Bill dealing with Saudi, Dubai and Kazakhstan autocrats *this last one brought him $11.3 MILION - no for hhe foundation but for the librarby" these are questions we better address - as they calaim, they need to be "vetterd" so nothing will come out under the GOP assoult later on.

This is no more a chea shot than Hillary's mention of Rezko in a debate. This is exactly the kind of stuff both of them will have to answer to in their campaign against McCain. Heck, Bill may have more to answer to when the NYT investigates further into the $130MM Clinton received for his foundation after securing a $3B uranium mine in Kazakhstan for a Canadian oppotunist.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:38 PM on 02/08/2008

If Bill received a $10M bonus for his book, that is about $5MM after taxes...I doubt that is the source. More likely, this loan comes in part from Bill's $20MM windfall for unwinding a business investment he had with Ron Burkle. Or, maybe Hillary's been investing in the cattle futures again? The definition of "unbecoming" is a former president of the United States using his prestige and influence to lend credibility to a despised dictator in Kazakhstan while his wife works on a Senate foreign relations committee to punnish the same dictator.

Figures that Obama's a-holes would strip Lieberman of super-delegate status. They're the same little a-holes that stripped Florida of delegates.

The Democratic Party now truly DESERVES to be called the "Democrat" Party. There is no longer anything democratic about it.

How about changing the name to the "Autocratic Party"? A bit more accurate, from my jaded, disenfranchised, Floridian point of view.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:26 PM on 02/08/2008

Obama, if nominated, will win NOTHING if Florida delegates aren't seated. I would love to see the DNC try it. They will hand the state to McCain (as we know, central Florida/NE Florida and SW Florida are heavy conservative areas) if they choose to punish the state. Democrats I have spoken with say if that happens, they WILL NOT VOTE.....PERIOD. Let's see Barack try and take the White House without Florida. Ain't gonna happen.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:37 PM on 02/08/2008

Funny that you punish Obama instead your state's party leadership. So Clintonesque to brake with agreements they've made. So we should seat delegates that weren't campaigned for? If Obama had Clinton's name recognition and had won Florida, you wouldn't be crying would you?

Good news, at least, about "bad news Lieberman"... he's a good reason for BOTH sides to NOT support McCain!

(and perhaps a good indicator of the possibility that Al Gore wasn't as bright as we hoped he was -- altho' ABSOLUTELY better than HowdyDoofus has been, no question, still, WHAT'S WITH THE DEMOCRATS and the candidates they choose????

WE COULDA HAD BIDEN OR DODD, for god's sake, either one of whom would have been landslide shoe-ins.

Instead we have a smoke-and-mirrors preacher and a former first lady who are both so polarizing it's scary, because despite what has been written that "everybody loves Hillary and/or Barak", THAT'S NOT AT ALL TRUE.(I don't like either of them.)

I would venture to say that about 1/3 love Hillary, about 1/3 love Obama, and the remaining third are split between those who will hold their nose and vote for one of them, and those who won't vote for either one...some of whom simply won't vote at all (which should put them in NoSh'Obama's camp) and some of whom will go to McCain.

In any case, I fear we may be screwed...AGAIN!

In fact, if you go to the US Senate website, you will note that Senator Lieberman is an independent, so maybe he should vote at their convention, but certainly not the Democratic Party's convention. The Clinton's were the Democratic Party's "establishment" players (see, Terry McAulliffe) when the rules were made, so you ire is misplaced.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Clintons' shadiest donors.
Post Date Monday, February 04, 2008

It's not that we expect politicians to have squeaky-clean donor lists. You try running for office without, at one point or another, taking money from someone you probably shouldn't. Even Barack Obama, Mr. Clean, has Tony Rezko. But the Frank Giustra-Kazakhstan-Uranium affair, blown open by The New York Times last week, serves as a reminder that the relationship between the Clintons and money has not always been lily-white. Here, a guide to the unsavory characters who have been associated with Bill and Hillary Clinton.

There is some evidence coming to light that Obama's connection with Rezko gave him intelligence about the state of Iraq's economy and lack of WMD program, hence the "I KNOW IRAQ POSSES NO THREAT" speech. For the love of God!! If he really knew why didn't he call some sort of intell meeting??
He couldn't because it would connect him too clearly with Rezko, Auchi and others who had questionable dealings.

Osama seems to have an identity crisis. First he has delusions of being John F. Kennedy, now he thinks that he's Ken Starr.

Bill Clinton has made $41 million in speaking fees over the last 8 years. Is it against the law to make money?

I'm beginning to wonder if Bill Clinton even wants to go back to the White House. Maybe he's throwing the election.

If Clinton wins, Bill can get half of 200 grand a year, and be the first lady. Whoopie doo. If he loses, he can make $5 million a year giving a few speeches. Not to mention not having to put up with all the endless static about Monica.

I think that the media has succeeded in making the Presidency into such a (s-word)y job, that no one in their right mind would want it. So it's not surprising that we get the candidates that we get.

No offense to any existing candidates, alive or dead, of course.

The more power one has (think president of the United States), the more money one attracts, and when big money is involved (think $1B foundation and $500M presidential library), the correlation to corruption is inevitable. Dictators don't give away $3B uranium mines without significant consideration...and foreign billionaires don't write $130M checks to an American "charity" without a personal, vested relationship.

Can any of us believe after reading the links that follow the money that Hillary and / or Hillary & Bill are "fully" vetted and invincible from being attacked by the Republicans in the Presidential election?

If one followed the money that the Clinton"s continue to accrue it will become a wonderful TV ad for the Republicans in the fall (only one example in NY Times in late January about the former president"s trip to a country in the former Soviet Republic run by a dictator, to secure raw uranium for a Canadian consort and the consort"s $31 million immediate contribution to the Clinton "Foundation" then after selling the company, $100 million "contribution" to the Clinton Foundation) :
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/31/us/politics/31donor.html?pagewanted=print

Again, on following the money, let"s look at Senator Clinton"s SENATE "earmarks" and then, the campaign contributions which followed those earmarks.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-k-wilson/clinton-by-far-worst-abus_b_84102.html

It fascinates me that when we discuss candidates" positions, we don"t take into account the "elect-ability" factor. WITH MORE REPUBLICAN CONGRESS RETIRING THAN EVER BEFORE, WOULD IT NOT BE EXTREMELY HELPFUL TO HAVE A "WORKING" MAJORITY IN BOTH HOUSES OF THE CONGRESS, SO THAT ANY OF THESE PLATFORMS CAN ACTUALLY STAND A CHANCE OF BEING LEGISLATED INTO LAW?

And for all the talk of change among teh wide-eyed Obama voters, look at the numbers; they are about as numerous as the nader herd in 2000. When push comes to shove in november, with teh economy as it si, voters are going to look for a pair of safe hands and not an unknown quantity. McCain would crush Obama but lose to HRC.

You want a Super Majority and then turn the screws on the Dems? Get real. Look what they did with the sizeable majority you gave them in '06! Look at Pelosi and Read. There is an understanding that impeachment is very important to restitute the constitutional rule and who took it off the table? Democrats with a Super Majority. Now imagine a President HRC with her being rooted so deeply in the Washingtonian old ways. You want a Republican rule with frills and laces? Go ahead vote for HRC.
Your country needs to change and you better start with a new President, who doesn't play in the Washingtonian interest group super league yet.

Look at the dems form red-turning-purple states: HRC is "fatal" for the down-ticket. The GOP will turn out in droves against her, and hurting others on the ticket. add to this the fact of her ) corss-over appeal, limited attraction to independents, and a sizeable hard negative amoong dem. voters, esp. if she would "win" this though former Clinton era party big shots over a clear electoral vote.
She is the best chance, of a loss in November or total gridloack afterwards. Neither of these are appealing to me. (And that does not even address the damage to the long term interest to the party her scorched-earth campaign is causing....)
