NEW ORLEANS — Democrat Barack Obama suggested Thursday that Hillary Rodham Clinton follow his lead and release her and her husband's income tax returns so the public can see where the $5 million she loaned her presidential campaign came from.

A day earlier, Clinton acknowledged that she had made the loan late last month. At the time, Obama was raising and spending more money than her heading into the round of presidential primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday.

Asked whether he would call on the Clintons to release their tax returns, Obama stopped short of saying they should.

"I'll just say that I've released my tax returns. That's been a policy I've maintained consistently. I think the American people deserve to know where you get your income from. But I'll leave it up to you guys to chase it down," he told reporters on the flight to Omaha, Neb., for a rally.

"I've disclosed my income tax returns," he said. "I think we set the bar in terms of transparency and disclosure that has been a consistent theme of my campaign and my career in politics."

There was no immediate comment from Clinton's campaign.

Obama noted that Clinton is wealthier than he is. Asked whether he would rule out tapping his personal funds to pay for his presidential campaign, he said, "I don't have enough money to drop $5 million into a campaign."

Clinton's financial disclosures, which reveal only broad ranges of assets, place her and former President Clinton's wealth between $10 million to $50 million.

Obama released tax documents last year showing income of more than $991,000 for him and his wife, Michelle. The figure included his Senate salary as well as her income as an administrator of the University of Chicago Hospitals.

When the Clintons release their tax info., will Obama start explaining his ties to Exelon? The truth this time....not the fabricated story of "I am not for Yucca Mtn." Will he FINALLY admit his ties to Rezko go back
over 17 years, and not "five hours worth of work", as he would like you to believe. Will he admit he ran ads in FL. after agreeing not to during their primary? Will he admit he's pandering to the BLACK baptist vote by allowing Donnie McClurkin, a homophobic preacher to campaign for him? Yet all the while,Obama spouts off 'equality','unite','hope and change.'
What exactly has Obama accomplished? His so called community work in Chicago is being disputed. His so called nuclear bill is very watered down version that hands control to the nuke industry. So,what has he done except talk, talk, talk?

If Obama is elected he better pray for a democratic Congress. The Republicans dragged the Clintons through the mud over Whitewater for years. What will they do when they get a hold of Obama's real estate dealings with Rezco? It is gonna make whitewater look like a walk in the park. It will be four years of nothing but scandal.

all the sleaze the comes around has been perpetrated by the rightwing and obama camp. You need to check out the repub sites, they are developing their attacks on obama in case obama is the nominee. They are trying to knock Hillary out now because they can't beat her. Your kumbaya dream is just that a dream.

First of all, that's IF they release their tax returns. My bet is that they won't; way too embarrassing.

But if you think Resko is a problem for Obama, go check out this list of problems for the Clintons:

http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=076fd56f-4aca-4683-a9d1-3c55d748946e

That's just for starters.

And his ads in FL were national ads. The DNC allows it's candidates to run national ads, you fool.

His community work in Chicago is NOT in dispute. That's a flat out lie.

And the only reason his bill got watered down was because the Republicans blocked it.

I guess it doesn't matter to you that Obama passed the most sweeping ethics legislation since Watergate.

I suppose it doesn't bother you that Hillary was a corporate lawyer for Wall Mart.

You Hillary supporters remind me of what it's like to argue with right wingers on Townhall.com They're so ill-informed it's hard to know where to begin with them.

Phylo out.

Obama received $269,100 from the employees of Exelon, a nuclear company for his vote on the 2005 Dick Cheney Energy Bill that was a give-away for oil, gas and the nuclear industry. CEO John Rowe of Exelon said Yucca Mt. is the lynchpin for the nuclear industry because it will solve the waste problem and allow the industry to grow. Obama seems to sell his votes cheap, he should have got at least $500,000.

The Clintons are like the Bushes. They don't believe in transparency. They believe in hiding things and having backroom deals. Notice how Hillary counts her time as First Lady as experience, yet won't disclose the papers detailing her time there. Are we supposed to take her word that she has experience without seeing proof of it?

What politician doesn't do this? Name one. Same old story: hold the opponent to a different standard than the person you support.

End result of the bickering: another Republican president.

It's safe to assume that 5mil did not empty Hillary's bank account so it would be interesting to see how a Senator was able to accumulate that much wealth, if it was simply from her book deals why not let us know and be done with it.

It's high time we dismiss the "Hillary will galvanize the Republicans" nonsense. There really isn't a while lot of difference between the two moderates left in this race. The fringe candidates are Huck and Barack (voted the most liberal senator in Washington). Some of my fellow Dems act like puppets on a conservative string, saying whatever the right wants you to say. THINK! If you want to pull votes from moderates and independents, it stands to reason you would have better success when the two candidates running are more EQUAL, not opposite. It will be Barack who will end up galvanizing conservatives, certainly not Clinton.

Those who continue to repeat that mantra are thinking without any logic or independence whatsoever, they are only repeating ad naseum conservative talking points. I have, on my e-mail list, probabably 30-45 conservative friends (close friends over the years while serving in the military...I'm long since retired). I do not know of one single conservative friend of mine who wants this race to be Mccain vs. Clinton. NOT ONE. They are all pulling for OBAMA, especially after Tuesday when it became clear, despite all of this MOMENTUM, he couldn't win in the big states (and certainly won't in Florida). You won't hear this from the righty talk show hosts because they WANT you to think Clinton will galvanize conservatives so you will march right to Obama and cast that vote. That logic parallels Al-Queda's who days before the election in Nov '04, DARED Americans to vote for Kerry and of course, they did exactly the opposite "WE'LL SHOW THOSE TERRORIST BASTARDS NOT TO TELL US WHO TO VOTE FOR!" and of course, Al-Queda was laughing all night long. We are free to choose who we want to vote for of course but any motivation for a candidate should be based on the candidate themselves, not idiotic threats from the opposing party who are playing mind games with you.

Does anyone actually think Obama is going to get a free pass from the right if he's the nominee? Get real.

I could not agree more. The right is salivating for Obama to run. He will be the next McCarthy/McGovern. You want to lose pick Obama. You want to win pick Clinton its as simple as that. It is great that all these democrats are "excited" but they ain't gonna be so excited the day after the election when we have "Insane McCain" as President.

May I ask how Sen. Clinton could win? On the GOP side, she has VERY little cross-over appeal - on the contrary, they will come out in droves to vote for any opponent and hurt the down-ticket (McCain's troubles with the conservative wing will be solved in a day!) ("fatal" as McCaskill called it); independents break largely against HRC, and go to O or McCain, and even in de dem base, there is a large numbers of voters that will simply stay home (esp, if she'd try to win it on unelected superdelegates). REad re McKinnon - McCain's ad man, who wrote Mc Cain last June that he would not work against Obama... Read your fact before you vote - or blog!

Karl Rove is a criminal. Karl Rove knows that if a Democrat is given the keys to the White House in January of 2009 he will be in big trouble. He may even spend time behind bars. That's why he has retained defense lawyers already. If Karl Rove actually believed that Hillary Clinton would galvanize Republicans and assure a Republican victory... HE WOULD NOT RUN AROUND SAYING IT EVERY CHANCE HE GETS. Please wake up people. The Republicans have laid the best traps for us for 25 years and we just keep walking right into them. Please don't do it again.

I'm listening to the radio this morning and the dj is a very liberal man but his father is an ultra conservative Fox News, republican. So the dad gets on the radio with the son and the topic somehow turns to politics. The ultra conservative dad starts railing on Clinton and how he wishes Obama would wipe the floor with her. The son asks "what do you think of Obama". And the dad heaped tons of praise on him and said that he would even vote for him if he beat Hillary. (Drex in the morning, Chicago)

So this is where we're at people. We have one candidate who is divisive and will not doubt loose us the presidency and the Congress. And we have another in Obama who is drawing ultra conservatives to his camp who are willing to vote for him. An almost guaranteed win in November and improving our numbers in Congress.

How do you fight this logic? Why would you vote Clinton?

And if you don't think Clinton will galvanize conservatives, you don't know the conservatives. All you have to do is say the word Hillary and they go barking mad.

This isn't about McCain or Romney...this is about HRC and Obama. HRC made the point of telling everyone she lent the campaign $5mil, so SHE opened herself up this...not Obama...this has nothing to do with sexism. Stop making it more than what it is.

It's not amazing that she had to LOAN her campaign money...it shows poor planning and lack of finanical responsibility of her campaign funds...and this LOAN was done at the last minute to help her compete last Tuesday.

She's been lying to her supporters all a long...she knew a long time ago the money was short, but she was faking acting like she could make it happen...and when it didn't she had to beg her supports for the loot....

Stop playing mind games with yourself....see if what it is!

Barack Hussein Obama is a walking race card. With virtually no political record or significant history of public service to speak of, a "change" in skin color is basically all he's got to offer. Other than being Black, his policies and programs are no different than those of loser John Edwards. Obama's biggest claim is his desire to get rid of Social Security. Obama's admitted drug use (in his own memoirs) should be a major concern to the American people and to ignore that or to claim it is inconsequential is ridiculous. Obama didn't vote against the Iraq war, in fact, he abstained hoping he could claim "I didn't vote for the war..." Total hooey. Oprah's money is not going to save him. Any women who votes for him is voting to degrade their own daughter, to ensure their own daughters never achieve equal rights or break the corporate ceiling of America. Barack Hussein Obama is the worst type of racist we could have loose in America.

I saw the tape before it was butchered by the media in subsequent airings and Bill Clinton was also responding to a question. It's time that this African American straightened you white people out: many in the black community don't share the hatred and disdain for Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. It's too bad that more black people haven't realized that in the person of Barack Obama, white people have gotten what they've always wanted: the ability to handpick who are leadership should be. I voted for Jackson in '88 and I voted for Sharpton in '04. On Super Tuesday, I voted for Hillary. Bill Clinton's remark, in context, was referring to the hisorical fact that Jackson DID win SC, too. It's only you Jackson-haters that decided that this was race-baiting and put it out there as such. Since I don't hate Jesse Jackson, it was a meaningless statement to me. And if you think whites who have one iota of racist reservations about voting for Obama need Bill Clinton to remind them about race, you all obviously didn't pay attention to Harold Ford's disgusting loss in Tennesse in '06. I agree with the guy above: Obama is a phony and worse, an unqualified one. Just ask yourself, if he were white, with his background would he even be a serious candidate? So what makes him so special? Could it be the color of his skin??? Could it be that he is a SAFE Negro? You all better pay attention to the dire straits this country is in. It's hardly the moment in history for a neophyte.

If they tell him what to do, what in the devil do you think his corporate masters are going to do.

What planet are you living on? Sen. Clinton's campaign has received THE MOST MONEY _ EVER - from the defense industry, pharma and insurance companies. DO read a very good article available online from last July in The Nation "Hillary, Inc." and read the hard numbers - just the facts, the numbers...

All that corporate money is just because they like her best!

What is wrong with you people??

Just because she's taken more money from corporations and lobbyist's doesn't mean ANYTHING!

I don't want any more surprises!!

IS it dirty politics to show your tax returns, and suggest that others do, too??? Esp. in the light of Bill Clinton's dealings with Dubai, Saui and now even Kazakhstan - this is an issue that has to be resolved. As president, the tax returns were open to the public - why is this so difficult now? (Is McCain going to scream when people as about his medical record?) WHy, fe, is the Clinton library called "Fort Knox" in Arkansas - it's high time that the donor list and $ be public of that one, too - remember the Mark Rich pardons? Again - THIS ISSUE WILL BE OUT THERE IF HRC GETS THE NOMINATION _ THE PARTY 9and press) BETTER ADDRESS IT NOW!

Chill! I'm sure this issue -- if it truly becomes one -- will surface. The Clintons released their tax returns and the Clinton Foundation is separate from campaign funds raised on behalf of Hillary's campaign. What part of this don't you comprehend? If you want all presidential donor lists (WHY one and not the rest?) to be made public, then submit your issues before the legislature -- dare be a voice to be heard.

You're funny...

It's too late now to get that donation back that's going RIGHT back into the pocket of the Clintons.

You listen to these talking head like Chris Matthews telling me that guys like Limbaugh Hannity etc are rooting for Hillary so they can spend 4 years trashing her. This guy has his head so far up his ass. What makes him think the same guys aren't going to spend 4 years trashing Obama. Am I supposed to vote for someone based on the idea that the a-holes on the radio are going to or not going to trash. Matthews is so over the top for his hatred of Hillary. This is another false choice. F the right.

I'm AA and a Democrat. I despise Slime-baugh and Hannity. But I have to say, I love watching them squirm as their relevancy is being challenged in the person of John McCain. Just think, if the Republicans had chosen McCain from the gitgo, these people just might be history. Of course, they want Hillary over McCain. They just dispelled their own lie: that McCain will beat Hillary. They KNOW that McCain can beat Obama. These guys seriously don't want McCain in because that means they'll be OUT! So the next time you hear these bogus polls declaring that Obama fares better than Hillary in beating McCain, don't you believe it.

Oh my --obama the saint. Why doesn't he tell us all how he got his 1.5 million dollar home 7 months after he said he was broke...and all that money he saved in discounts per rezko.

Besides today is February 8, 2008 I thought you had til April 15th, 2008 to file your income tax. Are the Clintons supposed to run out and have it done, just cause assbutt tells them to because he wants to see it. And the ratsy tatsy group of lemmings that parrot the talking points he spews are repeating it.

Worst type of racist we could have? This isn't a discussion; this is madness.

He is a "walking race card" who only has a "'change' in skin color" to offer, and he is the "worst type of racist we could have loose in America."
As far as I can tell you think that Obama is a racist because he is black.

Go to google and type in "Obamas first run for State Senate" and you can read about Obamas first political win when he took a team of lawyers to the Election Commission and got the other 3 DEMS removed from the ballot. Didn't look like a "New Kind of Politics", just looked like dirty pool to me.

Release the tax records. We don't want any surprises when McCain's opposition research team starts investigating. And while you're at it release Bill's Foundation donor list.

And while the Clintons are at it, how about Hillary authorizing the un-sealing of her college papers from Wellesley (the only student's papers who is), and releasing the WH documents that have been "conveniently" withheld from the public at the Clinton prez library until AFTER the election in November?

Hope Obama brings this up in the debate you Clintonistas are so hot to have.

Exactly - and the contributions to the Clinton library! (remember the Rich pardon?) I am startled that Bill Clinton can get away with claiming to "just having been on a plane" with a buddy to Kazakhstan - and that $11.3 Million for the Clinton library just "happened" a few weeks after that?! This deal alone should raise grave concerens - the kazakh autocrat is on State DEp's list for his human rights records... WHy are the MSM not talking about this (after NYT raised it about 2 weeks ago)?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:31 AM on 02/08/2008

actually the donation was 31 million

Obama folks love to point out Rezko's campaign contributions to Hillary. That's a lot different than Obama entering into a sleazy real estate deal with his close friend, Rezko, which allowed him to buy a house for $300,000 under market value. Only after getting caught did Obama call his smelly deal "boneheaded". Perhaps before calling on Hillary to produce tax returns, Obama ought to release all of the closing documents relating to the purchase of his house from his good friend, Rezko.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:24 AM on 02/08/2008

rezko did not contribute directly to the clinton campaign. lets keep our facts straight. (i am not for clinton)

Did something illegal occur? Because I haven't heard that Obama was charged with anything or even heard it suggested that he did anything illegal. Maybe you subscribe to the Secret Tinhat Times.

No, Obama didn't do anything illegal whatsoever. Obama got a great deal on a house, Rezko is a sleazebag (who also gave money to some Clinton campaign officials), but Obama did nothing wrong, and definitely nothing compared to the financial dealings the Clintons have had their hands in (Hsu for starters, if you want a much worse and much more current example). Bill has been trading money for favors since even before he left the White House, how many hundreds of thousands of dollars does a presidential pardon cost again Bill?

We will see, Rezko had his bond revoked and he is sitting in jail awaiting his trial on Federal Political Corruption charges. Fitzgerald, the same guy that took "Scooter" Libby to trial, is running the Federal case and maybr Rezko might want to play "Lets Make a Deal" and save himself and rat out his political friends.
