"Gasoline," from Sheryl Crow's just-released Album "Detours," is set in 2017, and foresees a nightmarish future when the world runs out of gas:

It was the summer of the riots

And London sat in sweltering heat

And the gangs of Mini Coopers

Took the battle to the streets

But when the creed was handed down

For no more trucks and no more cars

They threw cans of petrol through the windows at Scotland Yard...

Bobby Kennedy, Jr. coined a term, "biostitute", that refers to a scientist who takes money to falsify data, thereby giving credence to a company or industry whose actions are harmful to the environment. I've noticed lately that a lot of biostitutes converge like vultures on news stories relating to the environment, in order to spread propaganda. In short, I suspect this article is being trolled by biostitutes.

Peak oil is not the problem. Global warming is.

Keynote speaker at ASPO6, Dr James R. Schlesinger, former US Energy Secretary:

"And therefore to the peakists I say, You can declare victory. You are no longer the beleagured small minority of voices crying in the wilderness. You are now main streams. You must learn to take yes for an answer and be gracious in victory."

Ridiculous. I remember Outta Oil tunes in the 70s. Alberta, Canada has 2.5 TRILLION Barrels of sand oil. 200 million barrels considered recoverable today. We'll drowned in the damn stuff. People need to stick with clean. They are currently trashing the area where sand oil is located. Venezuala has a few Trillion barrels of heavy oil. The trillion usage is no mistake. People like Crowe and many more well meaning folks are helping to sell Red Herring.

We may not be able to breath, but I know there will be oil.

Yes when India and China reach the consumption level of the developed western world it will be the equivalent of having 72 billion people on the planet based on todays standards of consumption. NOT SUSTAINABLE. We need NON carbon burning renewable energy alternatives. NOT more fuels that destroy ecosystems and emit carbon into the atmosphere.

Is Sheryl Crow joking again? Supply and demand will make sure the world isn't burning 12 times the oil of today. When demand outstrips supply then the NON carbon alternatives might be economical but when switch to the higher energy cost until you need to. Also, I saw on the net this week that sun activity is decreasing and we might be headed toward a mini ice age. We might need to burn as much carbon as possible to avoid this mini ice age!

Good Lord, More silliness from Sheryl "One Square of Toilet Paper" Crow.

I wonder: When everybody starts making fun of her about this, if she's going to claim she was joking again.

If some scientists are right, then "Peak Oil" isn't going to ever happen. Read the last issue of Science Magazine (perhaps the most prestigious peer-reviewed magazine on the planet) where they've had a study of certain hydrocarbon sources, and they think that maybe, much of the oil supply isn't organic, but geological. Which means, oil isn't a finite resource, but is for all practical purposes, infinite! This isn't a very new theory, but it has been ridiculed for a generation, and the data suggests it might not be wrong.

Does anyone remember Marion King Hubbard's predictions about U.S. Peak Oil occurring in the 1970's? He was laughed at until his claims substantiated...

Peoples' attempts to play down peak oil reminds me of the way global warming is being treated as a political debate instead of a global problem...The world's biggest oil field in Saudi Arabia ran dry in 2003 folks...peak oil is very real and very near.

My research indicates we'll either drown in the stuff or die breathing the air before there is any real shortage. At least in the 70's they pretended to be short on supply creating lines for gas in the cities. Notice any lines anywhere in the U.S. today. This is not a supply/demand problem.

My OC rhyming circa '97.

Who knew?

Who knew that to burn oil
would cause so much turmoil?
That the freedom to breed
would cause such great need?

That one day to pay on
clothes made out of rayon
would savage the small wealth
each need save for ill health

That the meaning of poor
would become "on death's door"
in a world sick with pollution
and no energy solution

That the lie "those who toil deserve"
would not help share the oil reserves
in a era when the takers of power
rise up, reign, and die by the hour

When fresh fruit is a rumor
not received with good humor
and not often tasted
unless by the rich it is wasted

When the Sun's energy
can be blocked, for a fee
and any talk about trees
refers to old history

When the smoothness of your hand
gives way to the shade of your tan
as the source of the gossip
about the depth of your pockets

When to console that sick friend
who can afford naught but her end
means going out of town
by taking stairs up and down

And being back before night
when they turn out the lights
and the hungry come out
to see if food walks about

When to be rich is to know
that to those far below
they are objects of hate
just the victors of late

(Their eyes water red as they weep
over memories money helps keep
live recordings of dead birds that can"t sing
without the energy money can bring)

When the powerful live on top
and pass their water by the drop
trickling down through the floors
"Purified!" the feds swore

(But if that is so
then why do you know
that the life you still treasure
by your floor can be measured?)

When the mouths that need fed
and the land that is dead
pen people like cattle
often after battles

In vertical stone cages
where rebellion oft rages
as we force the tired Earth
to feed our wanton births

Who knew...was it you?

Pardon my apparently egotistical pomposity - but Sheryl's song reminded me of how long the nightmare has been in the back of my head...
