Turner "Almost Done" Buying Up Ranchland

The "Mouth of the South" might be mellowing, at least in terms of his appetite for ranchland in Nebraska.

CNN founder Ted Turner, the largest private landowner in Nebraska and the United States and the nation's largest bison rancher, said Wednesday that he is about done buying new ranches.

He said he would like to reach 2 million acres nationwide before he dies -- about 40,000 acres more than he currently owns.

"I'm almost done. I've got enough," said Turner, who was visiting Omaha for the reopening and renaming of one of his 54 bison restaurants, now called Ted's Nebraska Grill.

The 69-year-old billionaire, philanthropist and conservationist said he isn't interested in free-standing ranches anymore, only "reasonably priced" parcels adjacent to his current operations, which include five ranches in Nebraska near Gordon, Oshkosh and Mullen. The ranches cover 425,221 acres, an area larger than Douglas and Sarpy Counties combined.

Billions of dollars, bison steaks, acres, mistresses. Only the best for Ted.

Apparently, from what they wrote, Paul Hammel, and/or the editors at the Omaha World Herald don't want you to know that Ted's doing this to save the land from pollution. There's gas drilling going on up there that's ruining a lot more land than the drills occupy. When the rains come, the creeks and lower pasture lands are ruined for what little vegetation they provide.

This isn't about owning a lot of land, it's about _saving_ a lot of land from -ahem- stupid humans.

I'm an admirer of Mr Turner's. What has been ignored in this article, of course, is the over-arching concept of re-wilding that is slowly laying the foundation for the time when North America once again has some semblance of its full compliment of wild places and wild animals, living together to provide us with the most benevolent and natural of life ways, while our human activity is restricted to areas where we can "clean up our mess" instead of expecting nature to do it for free.
Keep up the good work Mr Turner and I hope what remains to be done is beneficial to the overall aims of re-uniting our fractured biological potential and living legacy which we've so sadly squandered in the past.

He's got another motive, also left out of the article: He's dead-set-against all the gas drilling that's happening up there, ruining the land. When the rains come, the tailings of the drillings foul the water something fierce and run a lot more land than one might imagine. He's trying to buy up a lot of high places to prevent a lot of the lower creeks from becoming contaminated.

What a pity the article's author was either so clueless as to not know this or so corporate-interest focused that it was intentionally left out. Either way; poor reporting.

Michael moore did a great film about this on his old show in the late 90's. It was called "the awful truth".

Turner is looking to own a piece of land that goes from Canada to Mexico. I really wonder if he will stop there? Pole to Pole, maybe? Or at least Ellesmere Island to Tierra del Fuego. Such ego!

I do believe, no matter how good your intentions are, possession of greater than 100 million dollars or so is a Crime against Humanity

You should. It was a poorly written article. He's doing it to save the land from the gas drilling up there. He's trying to save a lot more land than he's buying, too. You'd know that and a lot more if the author were any good.
