Record Voter Turnout This Season

Los Angeles Times:

POST-ELECTION DAY UPDATES:

2008 Voter Turout The Best In Generations, Perhaps Centuries

The presidential primary season has not yet confirmed a nominee in either major party, but it has already notched a different political accomplishment: It has driven more people to participate in the process.

More people have registered to vote, and many states have reported record voter turnout in the primary contests and caucuses so far.

Though there are signs that Democrats are gaining most from these developments, much can happen between now and November, and whom the party settles on as its nominee could make a significant difference.

The shift in party registration has been measurable in early-voting states like Nevada, where the number of registered Democrats crept ahead of registered Republicans in the weeks leading up to the Jan. 19 caucuses.

In Iowa, which started the nation's nominating season five weeks ago, Democratic registrations leapfrogged ahead of Republicans. Registered Democrats climbed to 606,209 last month, up nearly 14% from four years ago, and Republican registrations slid more than 1% to 576,231.

In New Hampshire, more than 75,000 people registered as Democrats on the day of the primary last month, compared with 61,731 Republicans. Such registrations for Democrats were more than double the number in 2000; primary-day registrations among Republicans fell from 2000.

It's obvious people are itching to vote. And they're itching to give a bunch of Repuplicans the boot. But it's not smart to indulge in predicting how it's gonna be right now- don't forget that the Congressional Democrats have been an immense disappointment to the voters.

2006 was a year of high hopes and very bitter realities, and millions of voters haven't forgotten or forgiven. The Democrats really blew it, and so far, have not shown the Congressional skills needed to be secure in their majority. And they didn't work nearly as hard as they should have.

We only get a candidate as aspirational as Obama once in a blue moon. If the Congressional Democrats don't develop some spine and some serious guts fast, he'll be elected but wasted. Things the Republicans know how to do very well is sulk, drag feet, and vote no.

It's consistent. 64% dems and 36% rethugs. Check out the CNN numbers of total votes. The rethugs are also losing people who registers as independents. We may have universal insurance and be out of Iraq, finally.

It is doubtful that the media-saavy public in the upcoming "Crabcake primary" states will buy into the faltering Clinton campaign.

Too many questions about why Hillary won't release her taxes until after she becomes the Democratic nominee--if that happens.

(Doesn't she trust Democratic voters to make informed decisions?)

A lot of anxiety out there, too, about her plan to garnish workers' wages as part of her mandatory medical insurance plan.

Parents in particular would probably like to know what Bill and Hillary have to offer young people in terms of messages about the importance of honesty and integrity--given all the scandals surrounding the former First Family.

And of course there is still a lot of anger out there how the Clintons engaged in racial coding on the eve of the celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Finally, the metro area is home to a lot of human rights activists as well as recent immigrants who came to the United States fleeing political oppression, many of whom are likely to be less than impressed with Hillary's flip flopping on the issue of torture.

With such fundamental questions hanging in the balance, what Democrat worth the name will buy a bridge back to the 20th Century?

This is terrific.

However, there are still too many citizens not

voting for various reasons, none good.

VOTE!

It's about time our country woke up. If there is one - and only one - positive thing that comes out of the Bush Administration, it will be this reversal of apathy ... even if the reason stems more from indignation than from interest!

Well, I think you've got a lot of people out there that are basically saying, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore"!!!
Overdue, that. But, sometimes you have to jab a pig in the back end with a sharp, pointed stick to get it to move...

President Bush is owed a debt of gratitude for saving our Democracy. Who'd of thought he was right when he said history would judge him favorably? He may have thought it was the middle east they were going to judge him on, but it's the good ole' U.S. of A. that he's brought together. He IS in fact "a uniter". We are all united in our happiness to see him leave Washington. I propose that we move the Mexican border just north of Crawford, Texas shortly after he arrives back at home.
