The AP reports:

Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton replaced campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle with longtime aide Maggie Williams on Sunday, engineering a shake-up in a presidential campaign struggling to overcome rival Barack Obama's financial and political strengths.

The surprise announcement came hours after Obama's sweep of three contests Saturday. The Illinois senator also grabbed the early lead in caucuses in Maine on Sunday. In a fierce and historic fight with Obama for the party nod, Clinton also made a private visit this week to North Carolina to seek an endorsement from former Sen. John Edwards.

Campaign aides said Solis Doyle made the decision to leave on her own and was not urged to do so by the former first lady or any other senior member of the team. But it comes as Clinton struggles to catch Obama in fundraising and momentum and faces the prospect of losing every voting contest yet to come in February.

Solis Doyle sent the following note to campaign staffers Sunday, via the Chicago Sun-Times' Lynn Sweet:

Patti Solis Doyle sent the note below to campaign staff this afternoon:

Over a year ago Hillary launched her campaign for President.

Her announcement began a historic effort that has inspired millions and brought hundreds of thousands to their feet all across this nation.

I have been proud to manage this campaign, and prouder still to call Hillary my friend for more than sixteen years. I know that she will make a great President.

This has already been the longest Presidential campaign in the history of our nation, and one that has required enormous sacrifices from all of us and our families.

During the last month I have been working closely with my longtime friend, Maggie Williams.

This week Maggie will begin to assume the duties of campaign manager. I will serve as a senior adviser to Hillary and the campaign and travel with Hillary from time to time on the road. Maggie is a remarkable person and I am confident that she will do a fabulous job.

Although I will continue to see you all at headquarters, I would be remiss if I didn't thank each of you for your dedication, excellence, and passion over the last year.

You are the best campaign staff in the history of Presidential politics and I am grateful to each of you for your hard work and friendship.

The Washington Post reports that Obama easily won the Maine Caucus:

Barack Obama defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton in Maine presidential caucuses Sunday, grabbing a majority of delegates as the state's Democrats overlooked the snowy weather and turned out in heavy numbers for municipal gatherings.

Democrats in 420 Maine towns and cities were deciding how the state's 24 delegates will be allotted at the party's national convention in August. Despite the weather, turnout was "incredible," party executive director Arden Manning said.

With 91 percent of the participating precincts reporting, Obama led in state delegates elected over Clinton, 1,878 to 1,305, with 17 uncommitted.

Obama exulted in his recent victories in Maine and elsewhere, telling a crowd of 18,000 Sunday evening in Virginia Beach, Va., that "we have won on the Atlantic Coast, we have won on the Gulf Coast, we have won on the Pacific Coast" and places in between.

CLICK HERE FOR THIS WEEKEND'S UPDATED ELECTION RESULTS

Obama's victory in Maine comes a day after he swept contests in Louisiana, Washington state, Nebraska and the US Virgin Islands:

"We won in Louisiana, we won in Nebraska, we won in Washington state," Mr. Obama said at the Virginia Democrats' Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Richmond, Va. "We won North, we won South, we won in between. And I believe that we can win in Virginia on Tuesday if you're ready to stand for change."

While Mr. Obama's victories were significant, the Democratic Party awards delegates proportionally, so Mrs. Clinton stands to walk away from the contests with a sizable number. Both campaigns have dug in for a long and fierce delegate fight.

The nominating fight now turns to Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, which hold their primaries on Tuesday. Mr. Obama is considered well positioned in those states.

The Washington Post's Ruth Marcus profiled Williams in a 1994 article:

When then-White House Chief of Staff Thomas F. "Mack" McLarty decided it was time to set up a Whitewater damage control team in January, one person he turned to was Margaret A. Williams, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's chief of staff.

When Comptroller of the Currency Eugene A. Ludwig wanted to pass a message to the White House about the best strategy for handling Whitewater, he called Williams.

And when Deputy Treasury Secretary Roger C. Altman decided to remain in charge of overseeing a Whitewater-related case, he telephoned Williams -- who had advocated that course the day before -- to deliver the news and arrange a meeting to inform others at the White House.

As Congress hears testimony from White House officials about their involvement in the administration's handling of Whitewater, the prominence of Williams's role in trying to manage the controversy has become evident.

Arianna wrote about Williams in 1997:

Ever since her days as a student at a parochial school in Kansas City, loyalty has been a Williams trademark. The French nuns at her school divided the class into groups with their own distinct dress colors. "We all learned to develop this incredible loyalty to our color," Williams once explained. This loyalty was transferred to her bosses. The Washington Post described her working motto as "let them set the mission, let me get it done." But at some moment during Clinton's first term, the mission shifted from saving the country to saving the first couple.

"his black credentials"... "Wait until you see black thugs in prison for rape of white women in political campaign ads. Why did they do it. Becauase they were on a crack cocaine binge."... "osama camp"... "Once a doper, always a doper. What if he has a flashback and pushes the button? Aren't you worried"....
Do I need to go on. What a great bunch of supporters you have Senator Clinton! So inspiring, uplifting. Really fine message!

How about the fight for FISA? Call your reps and make sure they vote against it. Bush STILL thinks he can ignore the constitution and the law? Oh, by the way, thanks to Hillary Clinton for not even showing up to vote against such an important piece of legislation. If she REALLY listens to the voters, why the hell was she not there?

Do you know of any mainstream media, high profile columnists that are mentioning the “four terms of co-presidency” issue? It seems Barack supporters have to elevate their preferred candidate to near mythical status just to counter the Coronation of Hillary. If we are asked to accept another one to two terms of the same couple in the White House --that is a total of 12 to 16 years -- shouldn’t we be very sure they are head and shoulders above any other choice. Are they? On the contrary, I believe it is morally if not legally against the intent of the Constitution to let one couple amass so much power.

This weekend,

Barack bent Billary's big 'ol butt, across his knee, & gave it 4 HARD spankings.

Gave them something 'real' to cry about.

Go Obama!!

Obama is whoop'in up on the Clintons pretty good - yet Hillary's questioning wether Barack could handle McCain.

I think Billary should concern themselves with the fight their LOSING RIGHT NOW, instead of shrilling about how they 'won't get knocked-out' & 'are ready to take on McCain & the Republicans anywhere, anytime".

The Billary campaign is getting its clock cleaned by the junior senator from Illinois.

My advice to them - Get up off the ground, pick you teeth up, & get ready for some more a$$ whoop'in from Barack.

Go Obama!!

The Clinton camp has the name, the ESTABLISHMENT, a mojority of the democrat LOYALIST, the fundraising MACHINE that's unparalleled, an ENVIOUS tag team and yet, they can't seem to shake a freshman senator from IL.

They have the machine that's supposed to roll over or flatten the Republican machine. Yet, the machine built by a freshman Senator is even or in some cases ahead of the Clintons machine.

Now, if with all the advantage she has, she can't shake of an "empty suit" then I must question the ferociousness or durability of the Clinton machine. Is this where all the accusations of hype ought to be brought? I mean why can't they create seperation with all the advantages?

I have my explanations but I guess this post is long enough as is.

Sorry, but the odd placement of my previous comment probably didn't make any sense, so I'm repeating it again. This is for CHRISSIE: Your glaringly racist opinion of blacks in this country and elsewhere clearly explains your opposition to Senator Obama. In your small bigoted mind, the color of his skin is the only thing that matters and therefore not only overshadows but nullifies anything that speaks to the integrity of his character or to his qualifications as a candidate for the president of the United States. In fact, it is apparent that you would be opposed to any black man or woman who seeks that office. You really don't need to write anymore posts to try to find reasons to justify your opposition to Senator Obama. I think your statements in your last post says it all

Dont believe the official line that this shakeup is just "routine, no big deal". Of course it's a big deal. The Clinton campaign is concerned enough about its lack of momentum to regroup and restrategize.

The Clintons have always performed best under presure or when backed into a corner. Solis Doyle may have delivered the Hispanic vote as Clinton insiders hoped, but it was not enough to stop Obama in his tracks-as Clinton insiders also hoped!

Selecting long time confidante Maggie Williams is pulling out the big guns. Williams is a blindly, fiercely defensive Clinton loyalist who will fight to the proverbianl death on Clinton's behalf. It is also hoped that presenting an African American face will help with African Americans disillusioned and disappointed by the Clintons' divisive, racially insensitive campaign tactics. Trust me: not much at Camp-Clinton is done "routinely" without lots of thought about its possible effects on the electorate.

hmmmmmmmmm...you mean it wasn't just me ????

Whew !!!!!

Maggie Williams...the woman called in to save Hillary's ass when Whitewater was getting ready to bring Hillary down...talk about damage control !!!

Odd (not really) that she be called in to "help" at this point in time !!! I truly believe the Clinton's see a problem with her over-anticipated coronation....damage control for sure !!!

And be prepared...Maggie does NOT play nice !!!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:16 PM on 02/11/2008

Maggie Williams also gives the Clinton's cover for continuing to play race cards against Obama, since it now appear to those concerned voters that a black woman is serving up the sleaze against Obama and not the Clinton's themselves.

"Are you really that stupid?" Actually, I'm not stupid enough to vote for Clinton because I "think" she can do better in the general. I'm smart enough to vote for Barack Obama because he will make the best president. Some day, maybe you can figure this out. Once you learn to let go, that is. Oh, and since you can't figure this out either, McCain won't cut into dems. He won't cut into anything. He's done and the republicans know it. Thrown under the straight talk express bus just before it's steamrolled by dems. Look at D vs R numbers voting in primary. Remember '06? So do the republicans. I guess your fear tactics don't hold up.

Again, I congratulate you Obama supporters..a nice week and month to come....However, before you write Hillary's Obituary again (see Iowa, Super Tuesday, this weekend) the reality some of you idealists do not understand is despite all these
small to mid size states he is carrying (with the caucus votes much in his favor) if Hillary wins Ohio, Tx and Penn, (combined with NY, NJ, Mass, Calif) and the popular vote in Fla and Mich, there is no way in hell she does not get the nomination...if she has even 1 delegate more she is in, and truthfully, being the political machine the Clintons deservedly are(Bill being the only dem to actually beat repugs twice) party insiders will maek up for the delegates if it is within single to low double digits...bottom line, she does the rop-a dope this month (see Ali/Foreman for you young punks) and waits till the later round for the tko....and as much as I feel a bit depressed that it is not going her way right now, think and most of you and Arianna are going to feel when the "fairy tale" really is over....it will be incredibly crushing and deflating...and with the Clintons (god I love them) pay back will be a bitch!!!!

Different type of scenario as they have winner take all states...plus his campaign , unlike Clintons support in the DNC, had no real support within the RNC. As far as risk, she has no choice...she has lost all african american votes while Obama has 46% or more of white votes...she can't win the caucuses which imo, are less democratic than a general primary, so she needs the big states and truthfully, will probably win all three . The thing is, it has been such a nasty campaign against her by Obama and his followers that the real problem is many dems like me can never vote for him...it will hurt him just like the African American vote has hurt her...very ironic and sad to see her and Bill, our parties
only Prez to trample the repugs, turned on like this. You can love Obama without putting down the Clintons who have done a hell of a lot for the party...

Iowa...you really want to use that as an example ??? OK then !!!!

You are definately a reality-deprived Clinton supporter to mention Michigan and Florida, you know ?? There was no "popular vote" for Clinton. She signed a pledge and decided to ignor that by leaving her name on the ballot in Michigan. How can she claim a "win" when she wasn't running against anybody ???

The Clinton's (both) are just as corrupt as Bush...and tied at the hip to the Bush's.

Your ignorance of the facts will only serve to put this country in the disaster zone for another 4 years, should the Clinton's get re-elected.

The one thing I couldn't get over in our caucus was how people so badly wanted Bill Clinton back in the white house...Hillary was secondary. It was Bill this and Bill that...and when I asked them about Hillary and what she brings to the table...I was met with blank stares, no one responded...and one guy said...It's a two for deal...you get both Clintons with one vote..I'm sorry, that is not reason enough for me to cast a vote for Clinton.

Many of us are more loyal to the idea of less corruption, and a candidate who actually cares about the country than we are to any particular party.

If the only choice left is a corrupt candidate who will surely sell the oval office the highest bitter, one might cross party lines or just not vote at all.

The fact that Clinton is soldiering on instead of making plans to pack it up and go home tells you that her campaign is running on ambition rather than concern for the American people. We keep telling her, in primary after primary, that we have chosen Obama. She just isn't listening because she never listens to us. Clinton's behavior right now demonstrates why she is not the candidate we need.

GOOD POINT ABOUT IF THE SITUATION WERE REVERSED...

Clinton is evidently counting on those "super delegates" to hand her the nomination despite her losses in the primaries and caucuses. It's clear that the Clintons want the nomination for her at any cost. And the cost could be huge. If Obama goes in to the convention with a substantial plurality of primary/caucus delegates and then loses the nomination to Hillary Clinton because of "super delegate" votes, there will be hell to pay in the Democratic party, including a possible big loss in November. Hillary Clinton doesn't seem to care about any of that....
