STOCKHOLM (AFP) - If Barack Obama becomes the next US president he will surely be assassinated, British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing predicted in a newspaper interview published here Saturday.

Obama, who is vying to become the first black president in US history, "would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him," Lessing, 88, told the Dagens Nyheter daily.

Lessing, who won the 2007 Nobel Literature Prize, said it might be better if Obama's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton were to succeed in her bid to become the first woman president of the United States.

"The best thing would be if they (Clinton and Obama) were to run together. Hillary is a very sharp lady. It might be calmer if she were to win, and not Obama," she said.

We've had enough fear in our government for too long. Now we're supposed to let the British inject fear into the race so Hillary can win? Go Obama Go Go Obama. Enough of the fear! Time to step up and meet our challenges nose to nose and quit acting like a scared dog.

Careful with the anti-British sentiment. Neither the elected government nor its subjects as a collective whole said a thing. It was one one woman published in a Scandinavian country.
I agree with your overall sentiment regarding reacting to fear, but refrain from making the kind of sweeping statements usually made by right-wing talk show hosts. Britian has injected nothing into the race.

Ah, ignore them.... it's more cheerleading from the flock. Logic and careful scrutiny of the facts at hand tend to fluster some of them.

I think Hillary is in greater danger than Obama. The Hate Hillary industry has been in business for years and has the likes of Limbaugh, Savage and Coulter barking at her heels and juicing up the nutjob neo-con extremists. They have been joined by the Obama subsidiary of Hate Hillary, Inc. which is a sub committee in the Obama campaign.

OH BOY! THIS IS REALLY SCARY. A HATE HILLARY, INC??? I AM NOT SURPRISED... AND HAVE ANYONE SEEN THE CUBAN FLAG AND CHE GUEVARA'S PICTURE IN ONE OF OBAMA'S CAMPAIGN OFFICES? THE REPUBS. ARE INVADING THE DEMOCRAT CAUCUSES AND PRIMARIES TO WEAKEN HILLARY. EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT HE WILL NOT WIN IN THE GEN. ELECTIONS. THE OBAMACANS WILL VOTE FOR MCCLAIN. PERIOD. I AM MORE CONCERNED OF H'S SAFETY THOUGH.

Lessing's statement shouldn't be read as endorsement of Clinton. She's just pointing how many hateful, murderous bigots there remain in America.

Jane Smiley blogged in a similar vein here on HuffPo:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jane-smiley/brass-tacks_b_84717.html

"The real danger of the next four years, as I see it, is that the election of any Democrat will trigger the rightwing deathsquads in all their different guises -- the media deathsquad, that hounds the president with nonsensical stories of scandal and distracts him from his business; the survivalist NRA deathsquads that pull off home-grown terrorist attacks, like the Oklahoma bombing; the lobbyist deathsquads, that gut all socially conscious or beneficial legislation, such as universal healthcare; the religious deathsquads, that harass and torment anyone who doesn't conform to a narrow and authoritarian social model; the thinktank deathsquads that propound deadly theories about the perfection of the "free market" or the horrors of "islamofacism" or the non-existence of climate change. It would actually be nice if the Fellow Wehner is telling the truth, that it is the Clintons personally that are the problem, because then the election of Obama would indeed signal a change. But if the goal of the corporatocracy is what it has seemed to be -- the permanent replacement of American democracy with a global imperialist empire and oligarchy of wealth, then Obama doesn't have a chance -- he will either be corrupted or destroyed.

"The Fellow Wehner and his cronies are warning us already, but the warning is hard to read. A lot depends on your sense of how ruthless they are. My sense is that they are deadly ruthless. I hope I'm wrong."

Man, Hillary supporters will go to any length to get their candidate elected. I suppose because people will resist change that we should just stay mired in the same old pile of crap? This 88 year old is supposed to tell us what to do? More reason to turn the page with Obama!

Two Kennedy's, Paul Wellstone and don't forget Missouri. Can you name four conservatives who died so suspiciously. Just wait and see. It is to bad the same system that educated Doris Lessing is not available to most Americans.

I would suggest that the people who comment negatively on Ms. Lessing should start reading history and forget playing amateur shrink

We're turning the page on that history. Sorry! What, because there have been Dem's assasinated (you could probably put MLK and Bob Marley on the list, too) that we should shrink away from our duties? More reason to fight for what's right!

It's amazing how people can say these things with such certainty and so little sense of shame.

I believe that there's a whole pychopathy around making outrageous statements hoping that some day they're right. That way they caqn prove their special God-given talent of fore-knowledge to the rest of the world.

No one ever remembers the thousands of silly things they said and never came to pass. But they hang onto the one outrageous claim they made that actually happened.

Really, Doris, go back to literature, see a psychiatrist...and will the rest of you please leave this poor sick woman to her treatment!

Just what I expected from an Obamaniac. Ms Lessing, who likely knows rather more about racism than you, having lived in Rhodesia for 25 years, is simply making her judgement based on the racism she perceives in the U.S. and, let's face it, its long history of political assassinationms that make it stand out among the Western democracies. Do you seriously mean to say she "hopes" that she'll be right? Re. your moniker what kind of research do you do, how to come up with simple-minded invective?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:46 AM on 02/12/2008

Obamaniac? I can hardly read you through all that bitterness. So, does Ms Lessing know more about racism than Barrack? Since we know there is always the threat of violence when you fight against injustice, should we just not fight? And let the racism and fear continue? Your bitterness has really gotten the better of you. Good luck next time, Hillary!

I consider Ms. Lessing one of my favorite writers, and I am disgusted at this comment.

She clearly wants Hillary to win, most likely because she is a woman, and the fact that she will stoop to such fear-mongering is an extraordinary disappointment.

Thanks to whoever posted her address. She's getting a letter from me.

This comment by a well-connected Brit suggests that if Obama fails to stop Clinton that his previous patrons may be willing to make a martyr of him for their own purposes.

The impending disclosure of the entire dossier on Sen. Obama's dealings with international organized crime figure would doom his campaign in any event.

The City of London financial set and their Wall Street junior partners want to install an American Mussolini to deal with the financial blowout. Mike Bloomberg is their man.

Sen Obama is simply their 'Stop Clinton' hobby horse, heavily promoted, for the moment, for that purpose.

A vote for Obama is a vote for 'Mussolini Mike' Bloomberg.

You sound bitter Clinton is getting her butt wiped by Obama. Any kind of triagulation to win, huh?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:04 AM on 02/12/2008

I wouldn't exactly call it getting her butt whipped, after all, she gets the big states and SHE is ahead in the delegate counts, which is surprising with all of the one sided bias for Obama.

But if uncompetent Obama starts rulling America uncompetently, lots of blame will go around, times are tough, and Obama supporters will be on receiving end .

But it's now your party Obama, you'v got decisive minority,so carry on.

And who will dicisive minority of democratic party nominate for 2012,Devol Patrick may be.

That is what we need, a Nobel-racist Brit, passing judgement on anything in the US. There is a reason many of our ancestors left her country and they are personified by Ms. Lessing.

Why go ballistic for stating the obvious? The issue is on many peoples minds in regards to both Obama and Hillary, but goes unstated for fear of fueling the public discussion and bending the trajectary of the upcomming election. Both Obama and Hillary are Democratic heros - always the target of Republican hate and venom which gives license to mayhem by the real sickos in their ranks.

In excoriating Ms. Lessing's comments I think we miss a larger point regarding the European view of America; that we, in many respects, are a violent and dysfunctional society.

Considering that we care for the violently insane among us by consigning them to the tender mercies of a homeless life on the streets instead of treating their disabilities, then make it as easy for them to obtain firearms as it is for the relatively more sane hunters and sportspersons among us, they may have a point.

In this context, Ms. Lessing's fears appear less motivated by political considerations, as some have egoistically suggested, than by how she and other Europeans view our culture, rightly or wrongly.

It is not imagination that points to our history of political assassinations and assassination attempts by people who seem, on the evidence, to be unhinged. Those are the sad facts. Our seeming inability to deal rationally with problems of this sort would seem to indicate that, in some respects, we are exactly the violent and dysfunctional society we appear to be.

Wise words, unfortunately most can't *hear* them.

That said, I hope she's wrong.

I witnessed RFK's assassination on television at the ripe old age of six. I haven't completely ever gotten over it, or that year in general - it was hard for my mother to explain those things to me.

Sometimes smart, talented people say stupid things and rely on stereotypes. Lessing is one of those people in this case. We Americans have more problems than we can count and we deserve condemnation for all of them. But Barack Obama will have a long, successful, and productive life whether he's in the White House or if he serves elsewhere. Lessing's flat wrong.
