STOCKHOLM (AFP) - If Barack Obama becomes the next US president he will surely be assassinated, British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing predicted in a newspaper interview published here Saturday.

Obama, who is vying to become the first black president in US history, "would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him," Lessing, 88, told the Dagens Nyheter daily.

Lessing, who won the 2007 Nobel Literature Prize, said it might be better if Obama's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton were to succeed in her bid to become the first woman president of the United States.

"The best thing would be if they (Clinton and Obama) were to run together. Hillary is a very sharp lady. It might be calmer if she were to win, and not Obama," she said.

You know that there is no more productive or meaningful way to discuss issues of racism anymore when merely ACKNOWLEDGING that racism exists gets you branded a racist. Pull your heads out of the sand and actually READ the comments. Doris Lessing is not supporting assassination. She is not a racist. In fact, she supports the "dream ticket." Just what do you people think you're reading?

there's an idea: getting these people to think. it's so much easier to follow all the lemmings over their cliff of damning rhetoric and misconstrued information.

you, though, are a breath of fresh air. peace.

Given the UK aversion to shaded skin pigmentation, I hardly accept her condemnation of American racism.

Just out of curiosity- have you ever BEEN to the UK? Know anyone from there? Because all you have to do is watch the BBC programming to see how much more integrated the UK has become in terms of race, religion, and sexuality than the good ol' enlightened USA.

That is pure pro-Hillary, pro-establishment, and pro-lobbyists horseshit. Let me get this straight: We should be scared of some deranged asshole murdering Sen. Obama? The politics of fear worked well over the last two cycles but it's just not going to work this time. All democrats need to come on over to the future of the party, President Barack Obama.

I feel sorry for the Clintons. This blantant race baiting by the Clintons themselves as well as their campaign, advisors, and supporters---such as the infamous media whore Bob Johnson---is beyond offensive and pathetic. I hope that the black community brings about a reckoning if she is successful in her electronic vote tampering and injection of racial division to steal the democratic nomination. I say it here and I will say it everywhere there is a black pair of ears to hear me. If she gets the nomination in such an unscrupulous and Bushian manner, blacks should vote with all the might and power of their constituency AGAINST Hillary. If they can't hold their noses long enough to vote independent or republican, then stay at home on election day in November and don't vote for Hillary at all. MLK and supporters eventually took a stand and stopped riding the bus when forced to sit in the back and black people should not stay on the racist, electronic vote tampering Hillary train in the general election. The Clintons are expecting that no matter what racist, divisive tactics they use against Obama, blacks will have no other choice but to vote democrat; however, there is another choice and it is to not vote for Hillary or at all in a general election. Now is the current generation's time to make a stand against this kind of racism and oppression that the Clintons are harkening us back to. Make a stand against supporting her ilk in November if she steals her way to the nomination with the most deplorable racial tactics.

you people are funny.

realize that she's almost 90 years-old, and lived the majority of her growing-up years in a world completely in-line with what she's said here. who could blame her for being an observant citizen in an unsympathetic world?

pick your battles, folks. besides, i don't think she'll be reading any of our holier-than-thou comments anytime soon, nor would she care.

Racists have an automatic response to deny the existence of racism and to dismiss the evidence of it as coincidence, just a joke, misinterpretation, much ado about nothing, etc; this is the first sign of a racist because every human instinctively seeks self-preservation. The racist defends, ignores, excuses, and maintains racist structures and behaviors because to do otherwise would concede a flaw imbedded in his core, i.e., he would have to admit that he too is a part of the problem and most people don't have the courage or mental acumen for self-analysis. You, the person to whom I originally responded, and the rest of your ilk are convenient examples.

C'mon people, the U.S. has a long history of assassinations and assassination attempts against black leaders and charismatic Presidents. Seems quite likely that someone will attempt to assassinate a charismatic, black President. Lessing's grasp of history is astute, but I find her lack of confidence in our ability to protect our President to be insulting.

Hey Doris- while you're at it, who's going to make it to the NCAA Final Four this Spring? I got my wallet open waiting for your answer. Thanks. ( as a bonus, how about the winner of the Kentucky Derby too? )

What an ignorant suggestion to make ... if Obama was elected he'd be assassinated. If such a despicable act did happen, there'd be rioting -- I know because I'd be part of that mob.

We should *never* act timidly because of implications of violence. But I don't mind doing a "level set" to those who voice such possibilities as to what the repercussions would be.

What an ungodly way to support her candidate Hillary Clinton! To say that her opponent would be assassinated! THAT'S why we should vote for Clinton??

Ms. Lessing, please check yourself into a home for the mentally disabled. You are now officially a total disgrace to feminists everywhere!

I live in the "Jim Crowe" south you speak of and have heard the opinions of the bigots and racists here and let me tell you they are alive and well.

I campaigned for Obama early on and when I started calling these people, I realized we had reason to fear. They are just as bad, if not worse, when faced with the prospect of a black president as they ever were. If you think differently you are just plain naive.

And as I stated, I campaigned early on for Obama. I was inspired and felt the movement and was truly touched by it, until I realized that it was an inspirational movement and that was it. You yell, YES WE CAN. I ask HOW? We can form a movement, we can be inspired, but we can voice our opinions and make them heard. Sen. Obama is inspirational and motivational, but he does not say HOW. Yes we can give our opinions, but haven't we already to the President in office? He knows how we feel, but does not care. We need someone in office not just inspire us, but to get the job done and Obama is just too new to Washington. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, we need an insider who knows how to get it done and he is still too green. He inspires us and tells us we can, but doesn't say how. WE can't shape foreign policy, we can't set a stimulus package, we can't regulate health care or balance the budget.

I am so tired of hearing YES WE CAN. It is a great slogan, but sorry guys, NO WE CAN'T, he has to and unless he starts telling me HOW? I am voting for Hillary, because YES SHE CAN!

Billary has the foreigners shilling with fear mongering and their uneducated idiots in America trying to capitalize on it. You are an obvious liar because you never supported Obama but think that false claim somehow lends validity to your threats; You are naive to not recognize that these dirty tactics will backfire again and again until Hillary buries herself out of the race; and You are stupid because (well it's true) Billary's campaign memos described you as such and this is the only thing they have been truthful about---the overwhelming dumbness of Hillary supporters.

I do not believe you.

1) Obama clearly outlined his policy positions both in his Virginia speech on Saturday, and on his website.

2) No Presidential candidate describes right down to the last dollar how they will enact their campaign promises. Their job is to create the framework, then have Congress draft and submit the legislation.

3) YES SHE CAN has to be the worst me-too campaign slogan I've ever heard. Talk about missing the friggin' point.

She's 88 year old bigot, who, regardless of any nobel prizes, probably clung to old biases her whole life, and seems happy to pass judgement on a country she doesn't live in. No point in trying to change people at 88. Let her live out her last years in peaceful delusion in a foreign land, and be glad she can't vote in our election.

Ironically, back in her heady ideological days, she fought to end apartheid in South Africa, but has a low enough opinion of American's to think that ten years after Nelson Mandela's election we couldn't have a black president here. Its so sad when people become cynical and prejudice in their old age...

Will this occur before or after an asteroid hits the earth?

If you live in fear, then you may as well dig a hole for yourself and die.
