Nobel Winner: Obama Will Be Assassinated If He Wins

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - If Barack Obama becomes the next US president he will surely be assassinated, British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing predicted in a newspaper interview published here Saturday.

Obama, who is vying to become the first black president in US history, "would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him," Lessing, 88, told the Dagens Nyheter daily.

Lessing, who won the 2007 Nobel Literature Prize, said it might be better if Obama's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton were to succeed in her bid to become the first woman president of the United States.

"The best thing would be if they (Clinton and Obama) were to run together. Hillary is a very sharp lady. It might be calmer if she were to win, and not Obama," she said.

I don't like this kind of talk one little bit. That it telling American's they should vote for McCain and save the country the ordeal of another President being assassinated. I know America has lost a lot in the last 7 years but they are not the basket case being predicted here. No, this kind of talk just sucks. I want no part of it.

If there was really a fear that Obama would be assassinated if he becomes president, his best protection is to get himself a running mate that is even more progressive than he is--similar to how Bush got a running mate even worse than himself protecting him from being impeached.

I'm sure Obama will laugh at this question and simply say that he will be proud to die for what he believes in, and for his country.

But they won't just want to kill him because he's black, but because he is not afraid to inconvenience some people who will NOT LIKE IT and kill him for it. Same as JFK. Edwards and Hillary, any real progressive would be in just the same danger.

I consider it criminally irresponsible for Doris Lessing to have made this comment. It also doesn't make sense, given her additional comment that Clinton and Obama should run together because "it might be calmer" if Clinton won.

So let's understand this: Lessing thinks the sort of person who might entertain thoughts of assassinating the first African American President will be mollified if he's only the Vice President to the first woman President??!!

Yeah. Right. Let's call this hysteria for what it is: Doris Lessing's endorsement of Hillary. That's all she really had to say: "I endorse Hillary."

She, not he, Doris is her first name. She is South African, originally, only British because people like her had to get the hell out of South Africa, and is now speaking out in the most racist part of the Western world, where she can expect sympathy. One might ask, does she presume to advise the American electorate? Here is a person from another country that is way above average in intelligence and she thinks the people of this country are capable of killing our own president for personal gain. I wonder how many people around the world are laughing at us because these three assassinations occurred and we let them be swept under the rug. What I find most shocking about the JFK assassination investigation, is how George (Poppy) Bush, when he was made head of the CIA, refused to cooperate with Congress who had reopened the JFK assassination investigation. The previous CIA head was fired because he was cooperating with Congress.

The greatest thing regarding this story is: It has had to be a topic of discussion between Sen. Obama and his wife. Yes, there is a real threat that he could be attacked (there ARE alot of whackos in this country)...BUT he decided to run anyway. It shows he has grit and the desire to make this a better country.

From personal experience I know Europeans have a bizarre view of race relations in the US.

I always thought it might be a good idea, though, to have Colin Powell on the ticket as VP with Obama, thereby thwarting any racist would-be assassin and giving the ticket some "defence" heft.

Powell was stabbed in the back by the neocon sell out of America during the run-up to the Iraq invasion and might even switch parties.

Obama is black? OMG! It is my understanding that Barack Obama is white. His mother is white. His cousin is Dick Cheney and he has an ancestral hometown in Ireland. OK, my point is he is not just a black man. He is half-white and half-black. I dare say that most of all of us, if we believe in evolution are of African descent. Indeed, many of us probably have more recent black ancestry – remember the recent Thomas Jefferson revelation. I am confounded daily by the constant description of him as African-American or Black. European have a bizarre view of race relations...Maybe that's why so many Black Artists and Musicians have immigrated to Europe and been wildly successful. There was even a guy named Jimi Hendrix who did not grow up in the South but found success in the UK. Nope, wrong. ( Gee does not one who reads the HuffPo read books?!!!) Lessing was born in Persia to British parents, and grew up in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). She has lived in Britain since 1949. If anyone here actually read her work, you would know she grew up in Rhodesia, her first book was about living in Rhodesia.

I think you are thinking about Nadine Gordimer, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991. Gordimer was a member of the ANC and South African!

I wonder if this story is even true. My husband is Swedish and we wanted to read the original article so we went to the Dagens Nyheter daily website (where AP says the story appeared) and there is no mention of it at all. We searched for "Doris Lessing" and got results but nothing about Obama. We searched for "Doris Lessing, Obama" and got nothing... and finally we searched for "Doris Lessing, mord" (Swedish for assasination) and got nothing.

So... where did this story come from?
