NYT's Rich: Clinton Camp Guilty Of "Bigoted" Lying

What if a presidential candidate held what she billed as "the largest, most interactive town hall in political history" on national television, and no one noticed?

The untold story in the run-up to Super Tuesday was Hillary Clinton's elaborate live prime-time special the night before the vote. Presiding from a studio in New York, the candidate took questions from audiences in 21 other cities. She had plugged the event four days earlier in the last gasp of her debate with Barack Obama and paid a small fortune for it: an hour of time on the Hallmark Channel plus satellite TV hookups for the assemblies of supporters stretching from coast to coast.

Used to respect Frank Rich. But this column seems like nothing but a dumb long winded rant.

I feel sorry for the Clintons. This blantant race baiting by the Clintons themselves as well as their campaign, advisors, and supporters---such as the infamous media whore Bob Johnson---is beyond offensive and pathetic. I hope that the black community brings about a reckoning if she is successful in her electronic vote tampering and injection of racial division to steal the democratic nomination. I say it here and I will say it everywhere there is a black pair of ears to hear me. If she gets the nomination in such an unscrupulous and Bushian manner, blacks should vote with all the might and power of their constituency AGAINST Hillary. If they can't hold their noses long enough to vote independent or republican, then stay at home on election day in November and don't vote for Hillary at all. MLK and supporters eventually took a stand and stopped riding the bus when forced to sit in the back and black people should not stay on the racist, electronic vote tampering Hillary train in the general election. The Clintons are expecting that no matter what racist, divisive tactics they use against Obama, blacks will have no other choice but to vote democrat; however, there is another choice and it is to not vote for Hillary or at all in a general election. Now is the current generation's time to make a stand against this kind of racism and oppression that the Clintons are harkening us back to. Make a stand against supporting her ilk in November if she steals her way to the nomination with the most deplorable racial tactics.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. M L King...

To ALL, without regard to skin color... In this struggle for the next President, we must take time to think twice and examine what is being said... NOT what we Hope for, or what we wish to be so, or emotional appeals, but what our Intelligence and Spirit tells us... Kind of like the old wisdom, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably isn't true"...

Obama says there is no Liberal, or Conservative America, but only ONE America... So, you of dark skin Color... Why do the Obama's Segregate you from "only ONE America"??? Measure twice, cut once, as the Carpenter says... The Obama's have, will, and are playing the Race Card! Be very, very, wary... MLK's four little children, are then simply changed from being Negro Children, to Black Children, living in Black America... The Obama's want to use your Race and skin color, to emotionally appeal for your votes... Do not allow anyone to Segregate you... More importantly, do NOT Segregate yourselves...
If we are to go forward, we must go back and rediscover those precious values - that all reality hinges on moral foundations and that all reality has spiritual control. M L King
A Belief in thinking Black versus White creates the Reality of Segregation... Think American... Do not allow peer pressure to keep you, or your Children, Black... What "White America"??? You sound to white = stay Black... Value your Personhood... At your Peril, as to Segregation creating, do NOT vote for a Black President, or Black Man for President.... Will the Obama's appeal to your Blackness, make the changes you desire?
Ask you, would it make sense if I ran as a "White, English, Irish, Dutch, Welsh, French, German and Cherokee Indian, President"??? ( Yeah, that's 7) Is that how Corporate Main Stream Media would label me???

Just another bash Clinton article by the media. Sometimes I wish these assholes would fired to stop them from reporting their biases. This was the same crap that got George Bush elected in 2000 and reelected in 2004. Whatever happened to objective reporting. It is a sad day to see reporting going the way of FOX News. These news outlets are openly backing candidates and promoting these canadidates. Do they think we stupid? I guess we are!

The picture makes me think Obama and Clinton are about to make out. That should really help the Clintons with the black folks if Hillary makes out with Obama. :-)

Which black folks?...Black people do not walk in lockstep about anything...so please work the brain and stop talking about black folks as if they are capable of being compartmentalized into some narrow box....

The funny thing is - Obama is whoop'in up on the Clintons pretty good - yet Hillary's questioning wether Barack could handle McCain.

I think Billary should concern themselves with the fight their LOSING RIGHT NOW, instead of shrilling about how they 'won't get knocked-out' & 'are ready to take on McCain anywhere, anytime".

The Billary campaign is getting its clock cleaned by the junior senator from Illinois.

My advice to them, get up off the ground, pick you teeth up, & get ready for some more a$$ whoop'in from Barack.

Go Obama!!

Hillary lost any chance that I might vote for her when Bill insinuated that whites would never vote for Obama and she made that comment about MLK. Everyone who heard the Clintons at that time recognized the race-bating speech for what it was. And I recognized Bill's comment was code-speak to white Southerners just before the SC primary. I was completely disgusted.

It is ironic, therefore, that Obama is not only kicking Clinton ass, but that he's doing it in states that have negligeable AA populations: North Dakota, Nebraska, MAINE. And at the same time, the media's predictions always predict Obama's chances to win based on a "sizeable African American community." Someone needs to inform them that there aren't enough AAs in the entire country to explain Obama's numbers. Duh.

For the record, I am a fifty+ white woman. I am voting for Obama because he is the first presidential candidate in recent memory who doesn't immediately remind me of a crook and a liar. The most important "change" needed in America today is a revival of the American spirit, that is, reviving the better part of ourselves that has been battered and beaten by eight years of the most corrupt, inept, criminal administration in all of our history.

Indeed. And the NY TImes endorsed her....funny that.

Yes even if this hadn't made to print the thing about Hillary is that she seems disingenuous; we all know that Bill certainly is. There is no generosity, no greater good no fair fight...no using your wits...just constant manipulation and chicanery...no wonder Bill has been able to work well with the Bushes, and said that Bush senior would have a position in Hillary's administration...they are of the same corrupt ilk.

Can you smell that,..........that foul odor?? Sure you can.

Know what it is?? It's the stench of corruption, which follows the Clintons wherever they go.

If you like that foul odor & want to smell it for 4+ years - then vote for Billary.

I personally think we can & do deserve better!

I was at the assembly of the Los Angeles town hall. We had people of every color, age, persuasion - many were volunteers who were informed the night before of the event. As they did across the nation - we each wrote a question, 5 questions were picked at random out of a hat, and then everyone voted on the top question to be asked by the person who wrote it for their city. This was the method employed "to be fair" - how ironic that crazy, antagonistic Frank Rich would be frothing at the mouth to denounce this fairness as bias - without knowing or even questioning the method employed. What assumption! I don't know the effect this event had upon the multitudes, I can tell you it surely galvanized us, Senator Clinton's supporters. And I found the event and Senator Clinton's tireless and substantive answers fascinating. Also, I would not call the emcee a 'servile' position - that's just frankly insane, Mr. Rich.

Bliss,

I am personally very happy to read your post which contains the facts associated with the town hall. We won't be needing those just now.

Obama, hallowed be thy name, has come down to us and spoken words of Hope. Frank Rich has been born anew and has accepted his Lord and, as with all religious fanatics, is no longer interested in worldly matters like facts -- blind faith and his Lord's light is now before his eyes.

The minions of Obama have apostates to burn. Inquisitions to organize. Crusades to fight. Secret clasps to grip. Chants of Hate to shout. Donations to tithe. Power to consolidate. Mobs to be incite. All for a sense of belonging to a movement. Behold His mighty new politics and weep. Bow before Him and His righteous army. And let those who will not come to Obama, be cast out.

No. I'm afraid we won't be in need of your facts my dear. Only your Obedience to Obama. My dear, you are standing in the Colosseum as an infidel. But do not be afraid, come to HIM. He waits to hold in HIS embrace. And you will truly feel BLISS.

If you really wanted to you could find out about Obama's ideas for us, read his books, check out his ads and speeches on youtube, google what others who have worked with him have to say about his leadership skills, and read his website.

The conventional wisdom adopted by the mainstream media, and Frank Rich ("a Clinton combine so ruthless that it risked shredding three decades of mutual affection with black America") asserts that Bill and Hillary Clinton overstepped, went a "bit too far," or even outright invoked racist sleights against Obama. That presumption has been so ingrained, to the point that there is no need or effort to elaborate with specifics, what the Clinton trespasses were. It has become a simple concession, the new Clinton mythology, with no required inspection.

In fact it seems that the Obama campaign has purposely promoted these notions choosing to paint Bill and Hillary"s statements with the taint of racial prejudice. In that way Obama"s campaign has established a sort of teflon posture such that any criticism thrust against Obama is presumed race based, and out of bounds, and precludes his need to defend with substance against the actual implications of Bill and Hillary"s assertions. The mainstream media, who have a long and less than endearing capacity to jump on a bandwagon, have willingly furthered this notion.

In 2000, the media furthered the framing by Karl Rove of Al Gore, that he had a "Pinochio Problem." In 2004, the media furthered the framing by Karl Rove that Kerry was an elitist and "flip-flopper." In 2008 they have adopted the Obama notion that Bill and Hillary have played the race card, without ever explaining this unfounded position. Bill & Hillary Clinton are not racist. They are not playing hardball. They are not Billary as Maureen Dowd"s anti-Hillary fixation seems to dictate. And Bill is right, that Obama has been given a pass by the press

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:28 PM on 02/10/2008

Hillary"s statement regarding the compliment in effort by MLK and LBJ may have been inartfull, but in no way slighted Dr. King. The Obama campaign released a four page memo on how to racially politicize Hillary"s statement. It was Michelle Obama who said in a speech at a fundraiser that Bill Clinton's Obama "fairy Tale" statement was a direct challenge to the idea of a black man being president, when she new that it was merely a question challenging Obama's fictional claim to being the real anti war candidate. This was not Michelle"s first transgression as she also called for black"s to "wake up" if they were not supporting Barack. Now she has expressed doubt about supporting Hillary, if she gets the nomination. It is clear that the Obama unity is a myth and that the priority is for Barack to be President, taking precedent over promoting Democratic policy both Barack and Hillary share in common.

The Bill Clinton, Obama, Jessie Jackson triangle, viewed from a less inflammatory perspective might simply be that South Carolina, because of its demographics is not a reliable predictor for future primaries. South Carolina equally supported Jessie Jackson, in previous primaries, yet Jackson gained no traction in the balance of his campaign Bill"s statement is no different from the press identifying the electorate in Iowa as 93% white and overwhelmingly supporting Obama, and using that fact as an indicator of his potential to attract white support in future primaries.

This Obama teflon shield will dissipate should he get the nomination. With the leveraged power of race on his side, Obama has successfully intimidated anyone tempted to truly challenge his record. In the general election that will no longer be the case and Obama is a vulnerable candidate. The compelling oratory, the pure poetry will give way to a defense of his real record and his real readiness. That may be a tougher sell than change, hope and Camelot.

John Edwards won South Carolina in 2004, just 4 years ago, and was unable to gain traction in the balance of his campaign. And he was still in this year's race at the time Bill Clinton made his statements. That would have been a far better example to use to make his point. Yet Clinton chose to go back TWENTY YEARS to specifically mention Jesse Jackson.

The more people see Obama's record, and the more they realize he has more experience in elected office than Hillary Clinton, they more they will see he has a solid record of working with fellow Democrats and with Republicans to get things done.

Interesting argument. I dispute it almost completely. First, the Hillary's camp started the talking points on Obama perhaps "dealing" drugs when he was 17. The connection between the term dealing and race is so obvious as to not require further comment. The next move was to say, cocaine dealing. Again, this is obvious racialized speech. (racialized and racist are two different things). Then Bob Kerry started with the Muslim nonsense... followed by Clinton supporters forwarding memos about Obama being a Muslim operative out to destroy America from within. Friends of mine in every caucus and primary state up to super Tuesday received these and other Muslim emails.

I suppose you could argue, foolishly, that it was just an accident that these emails appeared. Further we have the shift of brown over black. Hillary, after agreeing clearly to the primary schedule did everything in her power to discredit it after Iowa. The reason Iowa and New Hampshire were allowed to remain alone at the beginning of the process is that states like NV and SC where the population wasn't 99.9 % white would have equal participation in the process. As soon as Obama won Iowa, Hillary and her campaign began attempting to minimize SC. While this is good politics, minimize where you are going to lose, it has a racial component to it. Hillary and her staff didn't make any comments about the whiteness of Iowa or NH. They acted as if White was the normative position. What I mean is that an all white state can be fair, a state with a large black population can not be fair. The votes of Iowa (when she thought she was winning) and NH, only after she won, were honest fair votes. The votes of SC, because of the large black population, were somehow unfair, or should count less than the white votes of NH. This is the underlying message of the shift away from SC. Further, her disreguard of the state, not even being present during the week of the Primary, letting Bill do the campaigning, not even conceding when she lost, letting bill speak first, the list is endless, all acts a slap in the face of both the African American community and the rules committee of the DNC. The primary schedule was negotiated exhaustively, and during these negotiations, the Clinton power structure had a 50 pt lead in most states. She had a lot to say about how this worked out. As soon as it went sideways on her Hillary began talking about Michigan and Florida. As soon as it became impossible for Obama to campaign in either state she decided they should count.

itsnotmyfault,
I think you're spot on. I'm a fan of your analyses. I'll just say, "How soon we forget," and remind those who are swallowing Frank Rich whole that it wasn't so long ago when the "newspaper of record" was considered toilet paper for its publishing the disinformation of one Judith Miller. Historical memory is not a strong suit of Mr. Obama's or of his supporters. I guess it all depends on whose ox is being gored.

cwtts1,
It's all in your mind, this connection between "dealing" and "race" (by which you mean of course Afro-American). You're absolutely sure it doesn't relate to Italians, or Hispanics, or perhaps even hippie longhairs? And of course "cocaine" is also a cryptic code word referring only to our black brothers and sisters, and not, say, Freudian psychiatrists, or overpaid Hollywood addicts who play Freudian psychiatrist talk-show hosts, or my college buddy who laid out more lines for his bachelor party than the New York Central?

Wasn't it in "Dreams From My Father" that Obama himself sort of admits he was doing "maybe some blow"? I love the parsing in his use of "maybe." I don't know, but doesn't "blow" refer to "cocaine"? I'll have to ask my local Russian mafia dealer.

Why don't you do us all a favor and name names, dates, etc.?

Here's one from me: Feb. 4 before Super Tuesday, NY State Senator Bill Perkins, Obama supporter:

"This [Harlem] is not Bill Clinton's backyard or his plantation. Underscore, plantation..."

http://newbrooklynnetwork.typepad.com/brooklyn_ron/2008/02/bill-perkins-sa.html

Now that's what I call "racialized speech." But perhaps he doesn't know that for Americans "plantation" brings up images of white men riding on horses whipping black slaves in the cotton fields? Since I'm bi-racial myself (French-Polish) perhaps there's a subtlety here that I'm missing?

PS. If the senator is "JFK," can "Michelle O." be far behind?

So now he'll kiss up to Obama's campaign chairman instead. But, that won't gurantee Shuster Matthew's job on Hardball. Because once you piss off Hillary you're scum for life. Unless you work at Fox. Which means you were scum already to begin with.
