Clinton Camp Shake-Up: Charges Of Lying Over Fundraising Emerge

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:25 PM ET

Hihi

The Chicago Tribune reports more behind-the-scenes details of Sunday's Clinton camp shake-up, in which campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle was replaced by Maggie Williams.

According to the Tribune, Solis Doyle had been "lying" to Clinton about the campaign's lack of cash on hand, and Clinton had responded by keeping Solis Doyle in the dark about her $5 million loan to the campaign:

Solis Doyle, a Chicago native and sister of Ald. Danny Solis (25th), had been living on borrowed time as Clinton's campaign manager following the poor showing in Iowa and the rockiness leading up to the New Hampshire primary.

"What happened today would have happened the day after New Hampshire had we lost," one knowledgeable source said, adding that others may soon follow Solis Doyle's departure.

Initially, Williams was brought in to run the campaign even though Solis Doyle was still there. The result was confusion for the staff, who weren't sure who was really in charge, the source said.

But even more troublesome was the campaign's money crunch. Over the last seven years, Clinton had raised $175 million for her re-election and her presidential campaign. But Solis Doyle didn't tell Clinton that there was next to no cash on hand until after the New Hampshire primary.

"We were lying about money," the source said. "The cash on hand was nothing."

Clinton didn't tell Solis Doyle she was lending money to keep the campaign afloat. Solis Doyle found out third-hand. And when she asked Clinton about it, the senator told her she couldn't understand how the campaign had gotten to such a point, the source said.

Not very good leadership skills coming from billary. If there is this much chaos in her campaign, just think what she could do for this country.

The Biggest issue for me is. WHERE the HELL did 175 MILLION dollars go! By the second race in the campaign??? The whole thing is either a rope a dope, or a BIG money SCANDAL.

Mark Penn gets nearly 5 million for his "services". Half million for parking. I guess the McDonalds bill was about 10 Million.

If someone can't manage their campaign, to get them to the Oval Office, how are they going to manage the country, on day one?
Borrowing money, we've been there, we're there! Not enough boots on the ground to win in caucus states, not enough boots, that sounds awfully familiar. She wasn't expecting the nomination process to go on this long, I think we've heard something simular. Day one, day one, keep repeating that mantra and maybe it'll stick.

If Obama is the party nominee I sure hope Bloomberg runs.

'm tired of the Blue dogs in the party. They should be called red dogs. They don't even represent the ideas that the artist (who created the Blue dog) cares about.

Blue dogs are all about big business, and basically screwing over whoever needs be (no gays need apply) while still appearing folksy.

So thanks Blue dogs, for the housing crisis, the DLC, unfair student loans, oh and voting w/the Republicans whenever you get a chance (that also includes all the war and torture stuff-genital mutilation and child rapping that America now does). Thanks alot blue dog! You are the reason the dog looks so sad in the picture....he's saying, why did you sell out America to the highest bidders.

How's Clinton gonna run the entire country if she can't even run her campaign?? She has people lying to her and she keeps them around for over a month?! And Solis Doyle is still there with a prominent role in the campaign - this sounds more like George Bush style leadership: no accountability. I thought Clinton was the 'experience' candidate... so much for that.
11:49 PM on 02/11/2008
Well you see, magically she will be turned back into someone who doesn't care about polls. What you see know is just a curse put on Hillary, she will magically transform into Dennis Kuchinich if she wins!

The story behind the 5 million smells. Clinton's refusal to disclose her tax returns smells. Now this story about lies about campaign money? Come on.

Clitnons entire campaign tells us what kind of half assed president she will be.

Just say no.

It sounds to me like she's the kind of boss whose underlings are terrified to bring bad news to.

And that sounds WAY too much like Dubya. "Patti, you're doing a heck of a job"!"

Gee, and this is the candidate who is suppose to be STRONG on economic policy. Hillary was also given $800,000 last year by lobbyist. Seem like she could take some lessons from Obama who has managed just fine without lobbyist power, corruption and yes, money! She will have LOTS of favors to repay if she is the nominee.
11:26 PM on 02/11/2008
And Obama only takes money from the lawyers and other associates of the lobbyists, in a way I find that more disturbing that actually taking money from the lobbyists. It shows a bit of deceit. He takes the money, just not directly.

I think you mean Edwards the king of ambulance chasers, you moron.

The real question is should the uneducated masses continue to support a candidate who cannot manage her own campaign finances to lead us out of this recession and into full recovery of American's financial standing in the world, which rests on the value of the dollar.

The answer is that the uneducated masses are incapable of critical thinking so we can only hope that Bill is caught with another "cigar" as the country's only saving grace; this kind of garbage even idiots can understand is bad but they can't connect mismanagement of a campaign not boding well for an aspiring "CEO" of a country---looks like she inserted her foot in her mouth at that debate with all of her CEO talk and close, direct management requirements.

A campaign is long and grueling and if people lie to you it is not always immediately apparent so you make changes and move on. Bush has misplaced over eight billion in Iraq and no one is reising much of a stink yet.

Hillary is still way ahead of Republicans in dealing with money.
Republicans, spend other people's money like crazy, pass laws that unfairly enrich themselves and their fellow republicans, steal as much money as they can and use tax dollars to give welfare checks to multi-billion dollar companies while letting children go without.
Thank reason that the neoCONS are done with.

hillarious and sick willie have raked in over $50M since leaving the white house with the silverware and dishes.

That puts them ahead of most Republicans, but does not make them honorable people.

Clintons are now afraid to release their income tax records, the HillaryCare Secret Meeting records and the records of hillary's tea serving days in the White House.

The fully vetted candidate has a lot to hide

REASONS TO BE PROUD OF THE CLINTON CAMPAIGN

HILLARY HAS,...

- Successfully established herself as the presumptive, established Democratic nominee.
- Campaigned on the same, strong message, consistenly from day one.
- Inspired, motivated, & grown the Democratic Party
- Run on her merits, not reallying of the efforts of her husband, or his record.
- Put together the best politcal minds & experienced advisors to help in her campaign.
- Run a clean, respectful, unifying campaign.
- Successfully raised & manage all the funds necessary for her campaign.
- Avoided campaign 're-orgs' & maintained the same key members of her staff.
- Been very competitive in all primaries & caususes

Bottomline: Hillary & her campaign has been an oustanding success!!

Right, she's done nothing of substance.

This whole "shake up" isn't the only evidence of a campaign lacking solid leadership. Bill's antics ("can he be controlled") talk of endless, unresolved arguments over tactics and strategies, repeated versions of Hillary -- with her 35 years of experience -- finally settling into just the right strategy or message, finally "finding her voice."

All evidence of what Barack says: the right kind of experience is more important than the amount of experience. Let's face it, time after time in this campaign, Hillary has proven herself to be a pretty ineffective leader. Can this really be argued anymore?
