Clinton: Momentum No Problem After Caucus Losses

MSNBC News   |  Athena Jones   |   February 11, 2008 06:24 PM

One day before three contests her campaign has already said it expects her to lose, Hillary Clinton today declined to admit any concern over the momentum her rival could pick up if he sweeps February's primaries and caucuses....

...Clinton said she had not been surprised by the large margin of her recent losses to Obama, citing the fact that they were caucus states and in the case of Louisiania the "very strong and very proud African-American electorate, which I totally respect and understand."

I think it's very telling how marginalizes states in which she loses. Obama is very gracious and thanks his supporters even in states where he lost. I've never seen Hillary do that. Instead, she's on a plane to the next state. How bout thanking all the voters who braved the cold weather and lousy traffic to come vote for you?

Keep talking, Hillary. You are dispelling the myth of your own intelligence.

The Clintons are supposedly campaign geniuses, but this supposed newbie has got them on the ropes, and in their own party! If you are so smart, Hillary, then why are you losing?

She is playing the short game, hoping for a knock out blow. Before it was New Hampshire, then it was California, now it's Texas. Meanwhile, Obama is running up the score with states that "don't matter". He is outsmarting her by playing the long game, proving that he is more capable of running a nation than she is.

Even if she does win Texas, she is only saving herself for a day. If she abandons the field in February, Texas may be her last stand at the Alamo.

The Strong Woman just exposed herself! And she's really Bill when it matters.

Perhaps she should have changed the subject. She does that well. Whenever Wal-Mart board membership comes up, for example. Or when mention of Barack's activities as a successful community organizer in Chicago.

Hillary: "...you know, my husband didn't win any of these caucus states. You know, he didn't win Maine. He didn't win Colorado. He didn't win Washington."

===

Dear Hillary -

Thank you so much for all your efforts to become our fearless leader, especially when the Obama is TOO young, and McCain is TOO old.

You (on the other hand) are JUST right - just like Little Red Riding Hood's oatmeal.

Even though you're a brilliant professional politician with a crack staff and I'm not, I'd like to humbly offer you one teensy-weensy suggestion.

At this point in the proceedings, it might not be in your own best interest to frame your own statements in terms of what your husband did or did not do.

Just saying.

Sincerely,

Your Friend OTAYPANKY

Bill never won any caucuses.

Bill only won 43% of the vote.

How is Hillary comforting anyone with this bull?

I am an independent voter who caucused in Washington State. As an independent voter I've voted Green, I've voted for Nader, because I haven't been happy with the Democratic Party. I'm not afraid to vote third party, but this year, from taking the time to educate myself, while of course I was drinking my Starbucks latte, quite honestly, I drink Folgers, I went and caucused for Obama. I'm hoping against hope that I won't have to make that great leap of change and vote third party again. That this time the Democrats will get it together and make a change. So put whatever spin you want on caucus's but seeing an 18 year old discussing politics with a 94 year old, is what democracy is all about.

Yeah, I wish we had caucuses here in Ohio! Anyway, good point about the independents. I'm not a democrat either, but was intrigued by Obama and went to his rally here a few months back. I researched his policies and became a serious supporter from then on.

Ohio for Obama!!

Did anyone see this comment by Mark Penn today?

“She has consistently shown an electoral resiliency in difficult situations that have made her a winner,” Mr. Penn said. “Senator Obama has in fact never had a serious Republican challenger.”

I think the Obama campaign needs to point something out publicly and in the media. Based on Penn's comment, Obama is not strong enough to win the general election because he has never faced a Republican candidate and Hillary has always beat Republicans, therefore, she is tested.
Well, Obama must be pretty darn good to be doing to Clinton what her own campaign admits Republicans have been unable to do. That to me says he is a PRETTY TOUGH, WELL ORGANIZED, and DETERMINED candidate. If he can take her down, the Republicans will be a piece of cake.

Hillary ran agaisnt a tough republican?
She only ran once which was in NY...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:51 PM on 02/11/2008

Her race against Giuliani/Lazio was far tougher than Obama's race against Alan Keyes.

She actually ran twice, in 2000 against Rick Lazio and in 2006 ahaionst John Spencer. It's fair to say that relection in 2006 wasn't an issue, but the overall margin was staggering, 67% to 31%.

drewdawgsea - I couldn't agree with you more and I'd like to tag onto what you said. In his U.S. Senate race, Obama beat out a very crowded primary field (there were 5 or 7 contenders, I forget which) and won the nomination. That night, George W. Bush phoned his Republican opponent, Jim Ryan and pledged to "do whatever is necessary to help you win this seat." Well, the media eventually did Mr. Ryan in with a scandal about his abusiveness toward his estranged wife; then the Republicans begin searching for another strong contender and wound up with Alan Keyes. Alan Keyes may not be the smartest and most well-liked person, but he was certainly ultra conservative, and he certainly had the Republican machine with its various dirty tricks behind him. When Barack Obama emerged as the overwhelming winner, Alan Keyes gave a memorably bitter speech. The point is, Obama has run against a corrupt Democratic machine, a corrupt Republican machine, two Republican candidates, George W. Bush -- and came out the winner. He has also fared well against Clinton's attacks.

Why don't people research before they make baseless comments. What in the heck is this talk about Obama not doing well in primaries? He only does well in caucuses? Looks to me as if he's doing well in both. The FACTS------PLEASE STICK WITH THE FACTS---Are Below!

Please remember that Obama HAS WON these Primaries: Deleware, South Carolina, Alabama, Connecticut, Illinios, Utah, Louisiana, Missouri. PLUS Democrats Abroad (yes, they have a primary and delegates too). Total: 9 Primaries and 9 Caucuses. Plus the Virgin Islands.

Clinton has won: Arizona, Arkansas, California, NJ, NY, OK, Tennessee-Total 7 Primaries and only 2 caucuses.

Obama is WINNING ALL OVER THE PLACE IN ALL DEMOGRAPHICS ACROSS THIS COUNTRY! You CAN NOT SPIN THE FACTS!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for these facts! I get so frustrated with the gaping holes in peoples minds. But I'm also frustrated that Obama's people can't seem to simply rebut silly statements as soon as they're made. I appreciate the high ground mentality, but we're talking real politics here guys. High ground doesn't always get your point across.
Also, I'm a democrat abroad that voted last week in a global primary, and I was wondering when our votes would be acknowledged on the US side. Where did you find the information about those results?

One would think the Clinton’s would have learned a lesson in South Carolina, but it appears they didn’t. Talking to reporters today in an attempt to down play Senator Obama’s wins this weekend Hillary said this, I wrote it down word for word... I quote: In the case of Louisiana “you know” there’s a very strong and very proud African American electorate which I respect and understand.

Now I am not suggesting this is a raciest comment, as a black person I’m not overly sensitive, however among African American’s this sounds as if it’s expected they would only vote for the black man and not her. And among African American's it will be interpreted that because it’s a predominately African American electorate it doesn’t count as a “real win”. Hillary didn’t have to bring this up at all and I’m sure she knew that. And people wonder why the Clinton’s have been accused of “bringing the issue of race into the campaign”. I don’t recall Senator Obama bringing up the fact that the majority of white women are Hillary supporters, yes I’ve heard it in the media but never out of his mouth nor from his campaign. It appears that the Clinton’s have given up on the African American vote but I can say that’s a mistake on their part, because I personally know of two African American women that voted for her in California. This is how I see it, obviously the majority of African Americans are supporting Obama so the attempt on their part now is to get the "not so color blind" white people to get behind them. Sad and Shameless I could certainly be way off base but this is how I see it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:52 PM on 02/11/2008

It's a fact that the vast majority of African-Americans vote for Obama. Why would this be of concern to someone who's not sensitive about it?

Obama has worked very hard for the African-American vote and he's benefited greatly by doing so. Why would saying so be sad and shameless, unless it's a fact that you'd prefer not to accept?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:57 PM on 02/11/2008

My sensitivity comes from the fact that Senator Obama is running as a man not a black man, and I don't appreciated the Clinton's making it appear any other way!!

Just to add, the part that the Clinton camp seems to conveniently forget is that Obama faced a serious uphill battle to win over black voters. Polling last year showed black voters started at about 80% Hillary to %20 Barack Obama. Recall all the stories about Barack Obama being "black enough" to get the black vote. It took A LOT of WORK, long hours on the phone, going door to door, talking to people to convince black voters to vote for Obama. I know because I'm an Afr-Am who spent MANY hours talking with Afr-Ams trying to get them to consider Obama and it was a difficult sell given the deep level of affinity for the Clintons in the Afr-Am community. People talk a lot about South Carolina but I ask you to do the following - note how many times Obama visited South Carolina, how many events his campaign held in South Carolina, and compare them to how many times _Hillary Clinton_ campaigned in SC. Several SC voters said point-blank they didn't vote for Hillary because she didn't care to campaign for their vote. Simply put, the Clinton campaign pursued the following strategies - prior to Iowa, they thought they had the black vote in the bag and therefore didn't make the effort. After the Iowa loss, they thought it would be better for the long term to lose in SC and be able to paint Barack Obama as the "black candidate" afterward to scare white voters away from him (since he won in 93% white Iowa). Hence they therefore purposefully dropped their campaign efforts in the state. Which explains why Bill Clinton was ready on cue with the Jesse Jackson analogy. Bill and Hillary Clinton aren't "amateurs" when it comes to African-American sensibilities - after all he's the first "black" president. Bill especially KNEW what he was saying would incense black voters. After losing the black vote, they've decided to switch on relying on the Hispanic vote. Which is why they see Texas as a firewall.

Welp, good thing is that after tomorrow she won't be able to use that as yet another excuse. The only state with a primary/caucus after tomorrow that has a significant African American population is Mississippi.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:59 PM on 02/11/2008

I would like to add to my comment above, there was a time in this country African American’s felt “insignificant” that has certainly changed and no longer true. However, here lies the big issue with the comment Hillary made today, it stirs up that feeling of being seen as insignificant again.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:12 PM on 02/11/2008

That makes no sense at all. She attributed his success in large part to a great ground game that turned out unusually high numbers of African-Americans for the primaries and caucuses. How is that insignificant? The nature of the comment is in fact that African-American voter turnout and support for Obama were VERY SIGNIFICANT.

Hill says TX is important because it represents a broad section of the electorate- but Obama winning LA, WA state, Nebraska, and Maine in the same weekend is NOT a broad selection of the electorate? ha ha ha ha ha ha

Well, Texas has a population of 23.9 Million persons, compared to a combined 13.8 Million for Louisiana, Washington, Maine and Nebraska.

I'd say there's a pretty sizeable difference.

When was the last time a Dem won Texas? Jimmy Carter won in 1976.... and I'm sure LBJ won in 64 but outside that it's been a non issue... She writes off Utah and a bunch of other states that Obama won because they are red states... well Texas is about as red as it gets.... just ask the state legislature who fled the state when Delay engineered his little redistricting coup.

Hillary and her surrogates must forget that there are people listening to their every word 24/7. It's amazing that Hillary does not think before she speaks.

It's YouTube, stupid!

How can she keep saying things like this and simultaneously says she does not want to disenfranchise the voters in Florida?! If people don't wake up and realize she's talking out of both sides of her mouth, we deserve to have her as POTUS.

And for those who think Obama would not carry CA, NY, MA, et.al. during the general election, you are completely off. I doubt Obama would turn off the most liberal of states.

We were asked to make a statement why were were supporting our candidate, which I was happy to do however I admit I certainly have preferred to go into a closed both and cast my vote. Evita is always dismissive of states she does not win. This is the same attitude she had when she was in charge of health care and told other Dems her way or the highway. You are either with her or against her. When she looses a caucus, they are irrelevant and other states are becuase of large AA populations. And to think I once supported this person.

Wow. She's gotta be kidding. Anyone who went to the caucuses and didn't vote for HRC is an activist or a latte liberal. And in any case, it doesn't matter what these states do because Bill didn't win them!

The whole argument that caucuses favor Obama is illogical. First off, the caucuses were held on Saturday and Sunday. Many caucuses were open for several hours. Secondly, many of the primaries had people waiting in line for 3 hours or more, including New Mexico. If people can wait in line for 3 hours on a weekday, they can go to a caucus for an hour on the weekend. The entire argument is completely illogical.

The establishment candidate dissing caucuses. She is not doing well in caucuses because Obama has out organized the Clinton Machine and his supporters are inspired by him.

She has excuses for caucuses, for Louisiana, she will have excuses for tomorrows' blowout, she will have excuses for Hawaii and Wisconsin. Get the point...

Bottomline folks: Obama will have won twenty three States (if he wins Wisconsin) by March 4.
Even if he loses Ohio and Texas by small margins, Her status is not going to change. I believe Obama has a 50/50 chance of pulling one of those outs. I say it will be over if he does~~~With time and money he has to put into those two States, His chances may be even better!!!
