Brand-new U.S. citizen Craig Ferguson's American dream is to follow David Letterman on CBS for years to come. And if Letterman steps aside when his deal ends in 2010, Ferguson thinks the Late Show seat should go to -- Jon Stewart.

Craig Ferguson, hsot of CBS' Late Late Show"I think Jon should replace Dave if Dave decides to go," Ferguson said last week. "I think Dave should stay, I think he ain't done. But if Dave is finished, I think Jon has earned the job."

It might seem strange for the host of CBS' 12:30 a.m. Late Late Show to bask in his good fortune without seeking more time-slot glory. But after a long chat in Ferguson's office in which he waffled often on whether he truly wants 11:30 p.m., it seems he either has a great defense mechanism or he's just not sure what he wants to do if and when his boss leaves.

Absolutely NOT! Jon Stewart is a force to be reckoned with in his current environment, and would completely lose his freedom of speech and honesty if he associated himself with a corporate network. His audience would be incredibly disappointed with the constrained dialog forced by corporate network policy; I could not endure watching him become a eunuch. Jon, in his present environment, is a treasure...and the only reason I ever watch television.

The biggest concern I'd have for Stewart being Letterman's replacement is whether the network will let him say the things that Comedy Central does. CBS is well known for muzzling it's employees - just ask Dan Rather.

NOOOOOOOOO! If Jon Stewart goes to network, they will castrate him. He needs the freedom of cable. More importantly, I'm stuck with lousy satellite tv and unable to get network channels. All I have is Jon Stewart and Stephan Colbert. The networks can't have them!

I think Stewart's got what it takes to take over, if Dave steps down. I'd watch.

Does he realize that while NBC signed Conan to take the Tonight Show after Leno leaves, they still reserve the right to cancel this and re-sign Leno at any time?

Yes, but NBC has reportedly agreed to pay Conan $20 million if they renege on the deal AND they have no contract that would keep Leno from skipping off to FOX, ABC, or where ever.

Absolutely! I would actually stay up to watch Stewart host the Late Show.

He is smart AND funny.
