The Obama campaign announced today that it will play the ad titled "Mother" in Ohio and Texas. In the ad Obama discusses his mother's struggled to pay her medical bills while battling cancer.

Here's the script. See the video underneath.

My mother died of cancer at 53. In those last painful months, she was more worried about paying her medical bills than getting well. I hear stories like hers everyday. For 20 years Washington has talked about health care reform and reformed nothing. I've got a plan to cut costs and cover everyone. But unless we stop the bickering and the lobbyists we will be in the same place twenty years from now. I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message because to fix health care we have to fix Washington.

Listen to Obama discussing his mother's early death in the preface of his memoir, Dreams From My Father.

Great ad. It seems like the more we get to know Obama, the more we like him. I'm not sure I could say the same about his opponent.

New? That ad was released about 4 months ago

I wonder if she would qualify under his plan being that it is not a universal plan?

Hillary's plan is not universal either. It only pretends to be, even though both are called "universal." Mandated health insurance will ALWAYS leave some out. The only difference is which plan leaves out more. Hillary claims Obama's leaves out more, Obama claims mandated policies are a form of coercion.

Mandated healthcare is the nearest anyone in the world has to universal. Obama's plan should be called "lower cost healthcare". It's nowhere near the "reform" is promises in the ad that Washtington could achieve for 20 years.

The commercial is a good one..but the preface to the book is so touching....( I can't stop the tears as I write this)

Please note it wasn't recorded as a campaign ad.

This is truly a good son. As a mother, I know his mother is watching all of this. No matter how things turn out in politic land....I'm sure she is very proud.

Hillary supporters...please don't trash this...
OK?

Just because you would doesn't mean we will, OK?

I lost both my parents between 2001 and 2004. My father had planned ahead, leaving nothing for us to deal with but our own grief. He was a doctor, and a Eisenhower Republican, so we argued about "socialized" medicine for decades. He would say, "it will be the end of the profession, you watch!"

But, in the end, it was the only thing that kept him from loosing his shirt, and getting stuck in some really bad situation.

If he we're alive today, I'd be telling him that nothing short of universal healthcare, like the one outlined in H.R. 676 will save America from being the most backward nation on earth.

And I'm sure as hell not voting for "mandates" that drag money from my paycheck to put into the hands of the same insurance companies that have put us where we are today.

I know none of the candidates is proposing to pass H.R 676, but only one of them is capable of moving towards that goal, and providing a plan that holds the insurance companies accountable and is both achievable, and significant.

So, I approve of this message, but... here's my dream for America:

He is right unless you pull people together and stop the lobbyist from taking control there will never be any kind of universal health care. I think Obama is the man to bring all parties together to make it happen.

"The Color of Water" was written by James McBride - a man with a white other and a black father. The struggles of life are allegorical to the struggles of this country....

I LOVED that book. The author is here in Atlanta. At least, he used to be. I would recommend that everyone read it. I use that phrase all the time.

... and, I would add, effective. As a cancer survivor, mother, grandmother, and English professor, I find the ad both compassionate, and tactically brilliant.

Now that is a great presidential advertisement... informative, accurate, honest, and short. Keep up the great work Obama '08!

Wonderful, but what is Obama's plan?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:38 PM on 02/11/2008

It was a commerical not a freaking manifesto or two-hour made for television movie. Enough already with you TV rubes who are loathe to read (aka Hills Shills). Go to BarackObama.com if you dare to read [anything] and educate yourself or attend one of his rallies where he presents a synopsis of his plans and his vision.

Hostility is not going to get your candidate elected. You are correct I have not read enough on Obama's web site, however I have not read enough on Clinton's web site either. Call me a big slice of Americans who need the candidate to convey what they are planning to do for our Nation.
So far, Obama has not done this as well as Clinton.
But Calm down "republicat" I will vote for Obama in the general election if he wins.
Could you say the same about Clinton?

I have been an Obama supporter and voted for him in the Ca primary. I am troubled by this ad - I sympathize with Barack's loss - and it is his decision to publicize it - it just sorta feels like he is using her death for his own political ends...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:34 PM on 02/11/2008

How is this using her death? It is part of his life's experiences that help to from his policy.

True...can only IMAGINE what would have been the reaction if Senator Clinton had released the same ad. "Oh my God...she's faking sorrow...she's just trying to get sympathy....she's trying to appeal to the weak, womens' vote...she gave her own mother cancer...she stole her own mother's chemotherapy"....

Why the hatred?

Hahaha... Sad but true!

She already "pimped" out her daughter, and I'm sure by the end of all this madness they WILL come up with a way to say she invented cancer, created world hunger, and her lacking vagina is the reason men commit adultery the world over.

The double standard continues.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:59 PM on 02/11/2008

The key word here is "imagine," as in your rather vivid imagination. Settle down, nobody's saying any such thing about Clinton, are they.

I don't see what's wrong with it. It's history, and it shows he has personally experienced the lack of sufficient health insurance.
At the same time, it shows he is not ashamed of his white relatives. I think whites can see Obama as white, because of his mother, and blacks can see him as black because of his father. Some people have claimed that he is hiding his white relatives. This disproves that.
