The Obama campaign announced today that it will play the ad titled "Mother" in Ohio and Texas. In the ad Obama discusses his mother's struggled to pay her medical bills while battling cancer.

Here's the script. See the video underneath.

My mother died of cancer at 53. In those last painful months, she was more worried about paying her medical bills than getting well. I hear stories like hers everyday. For 20 years Washington has talked about health care reform and reformed nothing. I've got a plan to cut costs and cover everyone. But unless we stop the bickering and the lobbyists we will be in the same place twenty years from now. I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message because to fix health care we have to fix Washington.

Listen to Obama discussing his mother's early death in the preface of his memoir, Dreams From My Father.

Powerful and persuasive AD by Obama. I have been waiting for him to say something about his mother for a long time. She was the dominant force in his early life, and if the old saying is true, "as the twig is bent so grows the tree" he owes her a lot.

Yesterday the pundits were discussing the age issue, noting the longevity of McCain's mother...and how it's not how long but how well we live, and suggesting we look into the medical records (and family records) of our candidates.

Is this ad to bring attention to the fact that Obama's mom died young...of a disease that may be in Obama's genes...or his predeliction to cancer, or ???

Can't he discuss health care reform without bringing attention to his own genetic & family issues? Don't the repugnantkins have enough to throw at him?

Jealousy and pettiness runs deep in your veins.

How pathetic...can Hills Shill find anything positive about their candidate to throw at us instead of spending all their time trying to bring Obama down. This is why you will lose. Hillary and her supporters give America nothing to vote for only an evilness that pervades everything they do and say to vote against. Obama and his campaign are the opposite. You will lose the battle and the war.

This post is a joke, right? From one of the nastiest Obama supporters I've seen on any of these threads? Accusing others of being "evil"? Hysterical.

His healthcare plan is more efficient, sound and likely to HAPPEN.

Take a minute to review the contrast in an article in Wall Street TODAY:

Yes, Hiliary has universal healthcare but that won't pass. Why because of partisan politics. I remember her trying to pass that in the nineties. It didn't work.

Barak's plan is affordable healthcare not socialized medicine where it's both finaced by the public and private sectors. Plus I think he could work with Republicans and get it through both houses. I don't think Hiliary could do that. Too many people hate her. Sorry but it's true.

Hillary's last healthcare plan led to Republicans taking control of both houses of congress. Lets hope she really learned from that disaster,

Hillary's plan is based on income and capped premiums. I will stick with my current plan, but many people can't afford it. The will have a choice.
Barak's plan will have millions of free-riders who drive up everyone's premiums.

Oh, and i don't like that he never talks about the enforcement of the children mandates in his own plan.

Hillary's plan she pushes today is far from socialized medicine. It is a gift to the insurance companies, forcing all Americans to buy health insurance. IF it passes exactly as she plans, our system will remain a sick joke - insurance companies milking us while denying us necessary care whenever they can.

Your "socialized medicine" is just a stereotypical buzzword with no connection to reality or Clinton's plan.

But even if it was, I lived in Germany for 8 years and used their "socialized medicine". It's embarrasing how much better and more efficient healthcare is there. And cheaper.

We could have a President that can read a book, write a book , and actually no how to use and pronounce words. What a breath of fresh air he is.

"Until now healthcare was not a big issue to him." Get off your duff and do some research. Here's a link for starters, referring specifically to an Obama's healthcare initiatives and involvement with related legislation: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x4379566

actually, you are wrong. In Illinois he tried to get health care reform and couldn't. He did get health care of all children passed, so he has been working on health care for years.

just wait and see all that Obama can do for this country! He's already inspired the least of us to get involved and that's what it's going to take to get us away from American Idol.

It makes me a bit queasy when politicians use their dead relatives in their campaigns. I got that same queasy feeling when Gore talked about his dead sister (who died of lung cancer) in his film, An Inconvenient Truth. I got that same feeling when Edwards mentioned his dead son on occasion. I guess maybe it's that not many people, myself included, like to think of relatives dying (or having already died) and it reeks of a bit of shameless politicking for politicians to reference dead relatives while seeking votes.

So you don't think people can be moved to take action by the loss of a loved one? Has the world left so cold and cynical?

If someone has never lost a loved one, it is hard for them to understand that the love motivates you and stays with you long after they have died. It feels like a betrayal not to talk about them. It may make some people uncomfortable, but many of us can relate. I was touched by something I read where Barack told the story about how his mom pulled him out of bed one night just to watch an exceptional moon rising. I bet he is a great father.

He has the gravitas to pull his plan off as well. Hillary has already proven once she does not have the skill.

Hillary's Current plan? Force every American to buy insurance from the very companies that embody the problem in the first place, garnish your wages of you don't want to be held hostage by her "bosses", the big 7 insurers, and then call THAT universal health care. It's sort of like sending everyone in America to prison and calling it universal housing.

Obama knows - he's been through the darkest side of our medical system and the pain it causes. Universal health care is a family value. It is a shame in America that we have the highest medical costs in the world and that for those Americans faced with life threatening illness, the primary worry is cost, not wellness.

Maybe he should listen to Hillary then, she's the only one for universal healthcare. Obama's proposal is a weak, politically expedient proposal. I think it's a clear indication of what his presidency will be like.

As a child of a mixed marriage myself, it is so awesome that he can release this type of add. This country is moving in the right direction (slowly), despite so many people's desire to curtail social progress

If Schuster comments this way, I have a feeling that Barack would give a gentle laugh and start a discussion that would move the dialogue in a more positive direction...
