This was the dramatic scene as the world's largest statue of Jesus was hit by lightning.

The bolt parted the thunderclouds over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to strike Christ the Redeemer.

The statue is 130ft tall, is made of 700 tons of reinforced concrete and stands atop the 2,296ft Corcovado mountain overlooking the city.

Jesus is a lot like Elvis. I love the guy, but the fans can get pretty creepy.

The image of lightning striking Jayzus H Kerryst brought to mind those wonderful words written a long, long time ago:

...and the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made...

Ah, too bad those wonderful Brazilians didnt use the mountain top for a wind generator.

Who gets to determine what Jesus looked like considering that no one on earth has seen him?

I don't believe in graven images of Christ, I worship him in spirit and in truth.

Why would god strike his only begotten cement statue with lightning?

Jesus, our favorite cement deity
Lives on a Brazilian hill in perpetuity.
Even though he's a god
He's got no lightning rod
Which may interrupt his continuity.

Iffy photo.

Lighting bolts only last for a fraction of a sec and are very hard to photograph in the day time when you have to use fast shutter speeds.

At night it is fairly easy to photograph, all you need is a tripod and cable release and just keep shooting 10-20 sec exposures to you get one.

Bangs head against wall.

It's the tallest frigging thing around. Just because it was caught on film, doesn't mean it wasn't struck before.

the further dumbing down of humanity.

You'd think with all of these "experts" who post on here commenting about natural occurrences and global warming, they would have figured out your observation awhile ago.

Instead, all they can do is religion bash because their talking points don't deal with other natural occurrences beyond hurricanes and hot weather in the summer.

That statute has been struck before.

BTW- This winter is shaping up to be one of the coldest in the past 100 years in China and is looking to be one of the coldest overall in the U.S. in the last 30 years or so. San Diego is getting plenty of rain and a lot of snow throughout California.

Actually, religions are social organizations admission to which requires the purported belief in some set of absurd "beliefs" with no foundation in fact. They are, in this regard, a way of ensuring the propagation of genetic material for the replication of brains with inferior mental capacity. In other words, they are a way of providing plenty of canon fodder for the likes of Dick Cheney.

Just curious, why were a whole mess of comments removed? How come this happens frequently? Is someone at Huff Post opposed to free speech?

I wonder how Bush would interpret this?

He doesn't need to interpret it, remember, he has a direct line to god...

hmmm..... 4,000 year-old Babylonian world creation myth that came to us via Jews and Christians.

OR

A model arrived at and refined by rigorous scientific method and supported by countless observations and elegant mathematics.

Difficult choice...hmmmm.

With all that plagarism in the Judeo-Christian mythology, I can only conclude that there must have been a writer's strike back then.

One more thing, what they are saying about it being all concrete? Again, not exactly true. Its part concrete, underneath, but the over lay base is bronze. Its made to withstand all temps and extreme conditions. I know, I am a nerd.
