Clinton's Turf Invaded: Obama Wins Women, Working Class, White Males

The Virginia Democratic primary was supposed to be Sen. Hillary Clinton's best hope for the so-called Potomac Primaries. But a look at exit polls following a significant victory for Sen. Barack Obama shows that the Illinois Democrat's political base is expanding deep into Clinton's turf -- including among women and working class Democrats.

In Virginia, Obama outdid Clinton among women by a margin of 58 percent to 42. He also captured the majority of those voters who make less than $50,000: 59 percent to 40 percent. And even bested Clinton among Latinos by a margin of 55 to 45, though the later made up a small portion of the voting public and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Indeed, Obama had strong performances across the board. He narrowly lost the white vote to Clinton, 48 percent to 51 percent, but won the majority of white men in the state, 55 percent to 43 percent. That group, as recently as the South Carolina primary several weeks ago, also seemed firmly in the Clinton camp.

Obama also maintained what has become the most reliable demographic elements of his electoral base. Ninety percent of blacks supported the Senator, as did 66 percent of those under 40-years-of-age, 66 percent of independents, 70 percent of Republicans who voted in the Democratic primary, and 58 percent of post-graduates.

Update:

The exit polls from Maryland pretty much tell the same story. Obama won ever portion of the state, both the city and the suburbs. He won every income level as well, except for those voters making over $200,000. He won among those who said the economy was the most important issue as well as those who most valued the war in Iraq. And he won the majority of every age group.

Obama again won among Latinos: 53 percent to 47 percent (although the group again comprised a fairly small portion of the polling data). He was also close among whites: 46 percent to Clinton's 51.

He took the black vote by nearly 90 percent, and again bested Clinton among white men. Though, like he in Virginia, Clinton held on to white women by a margin of 55 percent to 42 percent.

Clintons (Billary): trainwreck vis a vis Bill race card et al early on, bad campaign strategy, and total arrogance re entitlement to another 8 years.

An Hispanic superdelegate is sending an email around saying there's a "cause for pause" because Hillary Clinton fired her Hispanic campaign manager and hired a black one.

That just REALLY looks bad.
06:55 PM on 02/13/2008
I saw that and don't think it was fair criticism. Her campaign is having problems and she made a management change. Its unfortunate that it is getting spun negatively.

And her lack of ability to manage her campaign with 35 years experience indicates how well qualified she is to run the country from day 1. And have you heard that she rented her mailing list out?
If you contribute to her, don't be surprised if your name will be out there. A person with poor judgment all around. Read this story from NPR

Only God can save Hillary Clinton now.
All is not well in her camp.
A house divided against itself cannot stand.

8 straight victories make Barack Obama phenomenal.

I am still very confident that Hillary Clinton will prevail in the end.

I am sorry but we once voted someone with no experience into the white house and look what happened?

Why are people so caught up in the political hype of what they are listening to?
We need real policies that fix people's real issues not a feel good rally.

How can someone say that mr Obama can deliver us out of recession we are really kidding ourselves

I'm sorry but you're wrong.

Who was the greatest president of the 19th Century? (I'll give you a clue: his nickname begins with the word HONEST).

Who was the greatest president of the 20th Century? (I'll give you another clue: he sat in a wheelchair while in the White House).

OK...now go to Wikipedia and read all about their pre-POTUS experience, and report back to us, otay?

Now...am I saying that Obama would turn out to be one of the greats, if he was elected? Of course I'm not.

But personally, I'd rather "roll the dice" with him rather than deal with a third go round with Billary.
03:10 PM on 02/13/2008
It's less important to worry about experience than it is to worry about who they are. George W. Bush was a repeatedly failed oil magnate. Barack Obama is a civil rights lawyer and community organizer. Hillary Clinton was a corporate lawyer. John Edwards was a trial lawyer. Ronald Reagan was an actor and corporate spokesperson. Bill Clinton is a lifelong politician. Al Gore was a journalist and war veteran. John Kerry was a war veteran and District Attorney. Howard Dean was a doctor.

Ignore their political experience, focus on who they were before they got into politics and you can pretty much predict what kind of a president they would be.
02:38 PM on 02/13/2008
I suggest you have a talk with an expert regarding our economy, and a president's ability to influence the country coming out of a recession. It doesn't work the way you think. The president has very little, if any control, over it. It cracks me up how Hillary touts the "Clinton economy" of the 1990s. The fact that Billary was in office for a recovery was simply blind, dumb, luck. Also, how does someone who squanders and mismanages $175,000,000.00 she raised for her campaign and expect us to believe she can effectively manage the White House?

As far as Clinton being able to fix problems, well she really hasn't been to successful at it before. Do you remember her health care fiasco. After all that time behind closed doors, she unveiled a plan that BOTH Dems and Republicans could not stomach. Of course, she has claimed a "vast right wing conspiracy" was blocking her every move.....yeah, right. Just like the accusation that Bill had fooled around with interns and lied to a grand jury was a .....drum roll please......yes, "vast right wing conspiracy." I welcome a woman president, but I doubt very seriously, she advances that agenda with her constant reliance on playing the victim. She hurts womens causes as much as she helps them.

And this 35 years experience....LOL. Her experience is based on her time as first lady too(and that only totals 16).....a period which they refuse to release any of her records and/or correspondence??? I think the only thing she has 35 years experience in, is telling people she has 35 years experience.

Or is it that they are more concerned with attaining POWER? This is really disturbing and personally disgusting to me. Read it and draw your own conclusions.

Besides watching Obama win big tonight, my favorite part was watching Pat Buchanan's sour puss when every single thing he's been saying about "white voters" was turned on it's head.

(ready Munchkins?)

"Ding dong, Buchanan's wrong, (the xenophobe, is so damn wrong.)

So far so good, no nasty attacks from either side on this post.... perhaps we're getting it..... together we stand divided we fall. I've never been able to stomach listening to any of the republican candidates for more than 5 minutes at a time (makes me ill) but I managed 3 McCain's speeches recently and came to this conclusion, I don't care who your dem candidate is, if they lose you better re-think not voting in protest. As heartbroken as you may be your candidate didn't win, you'll be ready to jump off a bridge when you see McCain taking the oath of office January 2009. And if you think I'm attempting humor here, next time he's speaking force yourself to listen.

...Hillary people please stop

Your embarrasing your self.

Explain this please:

1> FISA vote? Obama right Clinton missing?
2> Iraq vote? Obama right Clinton wrong
3> NAFTA (since she was co-president)
4> TELCOM act - Co-president right

Sorry Hillary try again another year.

You are not a good example for Americans.

You are running off of "fame" not accomplishments.

The reason your support is fleeting is because people are catching on to you.

What is it please that you really accomplished?
01:29 PM on 02/13/2008
"man of no ideas or substance"

It's really, really, really easy to find out what a canidate stands for these days:
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/

Just because you don't want to find out what a candidate stands for doesn't mean they don't stand for anything.
01:49 AM on 02/13/2008
hopeful optimism alone is worthless. it takes hope and the ability to execute. obama has hope but no execution or no record in all his years on earth of doing anything significant other than pulling himself off crack and into Harvard ( which is great but does not make a President).

What has he done other than say hope and yes we can?? I shouldn't be surprised at the sheep following this empty speech after all infomercials work and they sell bs too!

Cheers : )

Gsikev,

Stop being a lazy fuck and find out about his accomplishments. See, that's what Obama's campaign is all about. It's not about spewing a bunch of ignorant fodder only to reinforce some small pseudo-elitist point. It's about getting off your ass. So if you want to learn about his accomplishments; go up to the little space up there called a search engine and type in "Obama's accomplishments."
03:24 AM on 02/13/2008
This gives a good overview of some of Obama's substance.

Its amazing that Clinton cant even bring herself to mention that there was a major primary/caucus this evening. You can learn a lot about a person's true character when times are not going as they planned. A day after Iowa she essentially accused the state of being sexist and blew that state off, and after every other loss she's managed to insult the electorate of the states that didn't support her. Doesn't she know the whole country is watching and seeing what a sore loser she is? She keeps acting arrogant and like she's entitled to the presidency- sorry but this is a democracy - this is why Clinton's lost 8 straight contests (and in a week - it'll be 10)!

It's surreal.

As I watched her last night, I couldn't help but be reminded of Orwell's ANIMAL FARM.

It's just one more small litmus test of her character.

I mean, really, wouldn't she be SOOOOO much smarter to just acknowledge what happened, graciously congratulate her opponent, pledge to redouble her efforts, and ask her supporters to redouble their efforts for her?

As a white male and former Hillary supporter, what I like about Obama is that he doesn't play the race game like many black leaders in America. And this is why I think that Obama will win--both the nomination and the presidency. America needs a man like Obama to be the next POTUS. Yes we can! This message rings in my ears. Obama can win the white vote because he is not the kind of black man that whites feel uncomfortable being around. He's poised, he looks good in a suit and he doesn't make white people feel guilty about past racism in America. If people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would take a clue from Obama, then perhaps their own message would come across as more likeable to more Americans. Yes we can...and don't you forget it!

I know plenty of white voters who LOVE Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson. Maybe you need to "take a cue" (btw, mixed metaphore: "get a clue" or, "take their cue"; pick one) and rise above the shopworn talking points of Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter.

Did you hear what Rev. Al had to say on MSNBC tonight? He mentioned that the thing that impressed him most about Obama was watching kids from afluent homes standing next to kids with no homes, and standing together for one purpose. Nothing confrontational about that.

My favorite line from Obama is: "we can't pull ourselves up by tearing the other guy down."

Welcome to the club, Ambidexter, but just remember... we have work to do. All of us.

First off, before you mock someone's use of metaphors (notice the lack of e), make sure you understand the definition and basic grammatical usage.
Second off, Ambidexter has a clue because they mention the race card being played - not that Al Sharpton is horrible, wrong, or disliked.

That's like basically calling these folks lyers.

I don't see it. Hillary needs all the help she can get. If they wanted her they would have voted for her!

I though he hit that one out of the park!

...Americans have for too long made decisions out of fear of the unknown like premature babies or something.

Intellegence allows for analysis of the benefits and consequences of any venture.

We should no longer be forced into decisions out of fear.

The %WOR ON TERRER% is another huge mistake and shows how ignorance and greed have displaced truth and honor as values in America.

We must take our country back!

Obama is the man!
