Chris Matthews: "I Felt This Thrill Going Up My Leg" As Obama Spoke

Last night during MSNBC's Potomac Primary coverage, Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann were discussing Barack Obama's speech. Matthews — who, in the past, has both cried over an Obama speech and compared him to Jesus — described exactly what happens to him when Obama speaks:

I have to tell you, you know, it's part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama's speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often.

Later during MSNBC's coverage, resident anchorman/funnyman Brian Williams made fun of Matthews, saying, "let's talk about that feeling Chris gets up his leg when Obama talks." Watch:

I'm not sure I see the downside to anyone responding to an inspiring and uplifting message. Shouldn't we consider ourselves lucky to have the opportunity of someone's message bring a renewed sense of hope and vigor to our national debate? Would you consider it better if all the candidates were as uninspiring as McCain? Most of the crap that comes out of politicians mouths makes me want to go back to bed and pull the covers over my head. I'm glad Matthews gets excited--I do too.

Do you really think the Republicans are going to vote for a Democrat? Ah...NO. The Republicans who have been allowed to vote in the Democratic Primaries are just doing so, so they can give strength to the weaker democratic candidate. This opportunity is hazardous to our democracy, but it is what is happening.

The strongest candidate is Senator Clinton and we should all just fess up to it and nominate her, so that we can start getting back on track.

Absolute fame corrupts absolutely. Matthews has been off his rocker for a long time now. It used to be confined to the occasional sexist comment, telling every female guest how attractive she was (Breitweiser, Coulter, Ingraham, et al). Then came the Erin Burnett imbroglio.

Now the thrill up his leg. Chris, seek help. Check into rehab ASAP. It didn't work for Lindsey or Britney, but it could work for you.

Yeah, anyone doubt that Bill O'Reilly is, for once, 100% correct in saying that MSNBC openly supports Obama over Hillary only need to listen to Matthews once. The man has such a huge crush on Obama its actually sickening.

i heard that mathews absences were caused by diabetes. another commenter says stopping drinking. whatever the reason, mathews should consider either a leave of absence or retirement. the reason i say this is that i have been a mathews fan for years, yet the chris mathews i see now on tv seems very different from the mathews from a few years ago. he seems to be unable to control what he says. all journalists(and i use the term loosely) have personal opinions, however they try to be objective in their reporting. it seems mathews has lost any objectivity he may have had. at this point in time, even if msnbc wants to continue hardball, mathews should be removed from his other duties. i.e. election coverage, debate moderating, etc. granted on hardball he is acting as a pundit, but on the other programs he should revert back to his journalistic ethics. it seems he is incapable of that. too bad. a talented man may be at the end of his career.

How about the spitting and drooling that takes place when he is maniacally trying to get his point across? Anyone sitting on opposite sides to him should get an antibiotic before coming on. Why does MSNBC continue to back Matthews when the blogosphere is so contemptuous of him and has nicknamed him Tweety?
