"Red State" Democrats Dispute Clinton's Spin

Officials at several state Democratic Parties are taking exception and disagreed with statements by Sen. Hillary Clinton that seemingly write off the electoral relevance of their states.

In the wake of loses to Barack Obama in last weekend's slew of primaries, Clinton sought to minimize the political fallout by noting that several of the victories came from traditionally Republican-leaning states.

"It is highly unlikely we will win Alaska or North Dakota or Idaho or Nebraska," she told reporters. "But we have to win Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, Michigan ... And we've got to be competitive in places like Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma."

On Monday, the former first lady went a step further saying that it would take a "tsunami change in America," for Democrats to carry some of Obama's red states. "It's just not going to happen," she told ABC7 and Politico.

The premise of the argument was disputed by Democratic officials from several of those states, who say the landscape is ripe for the party to make inroads, and see the strategy of writing off the "red states" as antiquated.

"Their campaign has to work on where they are right now," said Matt Connealy, Executive Director of the Nebraska Democratic Party. "I don't think even Clinton should leave these predominantly red states alone. I think that is a recipe that has not proven to be effective in the past."

Indeed, the current argument over how and where Democrats should concentrate their resources mirrors similar disagreements that arose when Howard Dean took over as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Then and now the questions were: Is the party best served securing victories in voter-rich swing states? Or can it build up enough support (and drain GOP money in the process) by nationalizing its operation?

"I think a lot of folks here have seen the failed policies of the Bush administration time and again and they are getting tired of this country not moving in a positive direction," said Rick Gion, communications director of the North Dakota Democratic Party. "If there was a year that North Dakotans would go for Democrats this would be one of the best ones."

"We've had Democratic governors over the years. We've had Democratic legislatures. We've had a number of Democratic leaders elected to office," said Kay Brown, communications director for the Alaska Democratic Party. "Certainly it is possible [for a Democratic presidential candidate to win]. I think the Alaska is more closely divide then what you see in Congress."

The reality, of course, is far more daunting than these party officials let on. While Democrats in Alaska have been aided by ethics scandals of high-ranking GOP officials, the state is still predominantly Republican: 61 percent of the populace voted for George Bush in 2004. In North Dakota that number was 63 percent. And in Nebraska it was 66 percent.

But the same holds true in Texas and Oklahoma -- two states cited by Clinton as places where Democrats have to be "competitive" -- where Bush won 61 percent and 66 percent of the vote respectively. Clinton's campaign has trumpeted her win in Oklahoma's Democratic primary.

And yet, officials say, the benefits are worth the costs. Campaigning in the traditionally GOP states, Connealy notes "will get the base motivated and force the Republicans to spend resources."

And, he adds, you might be surprised: "If we make the ask in red states, people are willing to respond."

Red State Superdelegates!

Are You Listening to This?

Ladies and gentlemen (and undecideds), let's not forget that the government will take a census during the next presidency, and shortly thereafter all the congressional districts will be gerrymandered anew. The party that wins the presidency usually leads gains all the way to the bottom of the ticket.

What does this mean? It means that a win by the Democrats in the presidential race will likely lead to districting advantages in many states, even "red" states.

About Texas: I lived there for forty years and saw the change from "blue" to "red". I think it's going to at least turn back to purple. Three of the ten largest US cities are in Texas, and Democrats swept most of the races in the last election in Dallas. San Antonio is majority Hispanic (thus, "blue" leaning), and I could easily see Houston "bluing", as well. Tom Delay left a distinctly sour taste that won't soon be forgotten.

Don't write off the "red" states. I expect plenty of "Vote 'publican? NO WAY, NO HOW!!" in November. I'm hoping the 'publicans are finally headed for the toxic waste dump of history they have so richly earned. I'd like to see them dwindle to nothing.

Hillary's logic has been that she has the experience and is ready to run from day one. The thing is she has been through two presidential campaigns and several Arkansas campaigns and she was not ready to win. She was ready to make back room deals. She was ready to talk the talk, but she was not ready to start this campaign or she would not have put up such a sorry campaign that caused her to come in 3rd in Iowa, barely squeak through in New Hampshire and cause her to melt down completely in South Carolina.

HILLARY'S TOAST! Spread butter on her and serve her up during conversations at the next ball at the white house.

Uhmmm ... isn't Texas a red state? By HRC's logic, shouldn't Texans for Hillary not bother voting. They don't matter correct??

Chubby Checker ain't got nuthin' on Hillary's twists!

If Hillary got the nomination, we would be fighting the same John Kerry/Al Gore map yet again and praying for the same 3 or 4 states to break our way.

Unfortunately, just enough people hate Hillary in this country that she won't be the person to turn those states blue this time around.

Barack Obama is the only Democratic candidate that can lure the Independents away from McCain that she cannot carry PLUS win all of the Democratic votes as well.

Obama will win in November; Hillary will struggle mightily.

Barack has a long legislative record that can easily be Googled.

His long years of experience in both DC and Illinois informed his answers in this 52-minute uncut interview with the editorial board of the SF Chronicle that was very illuminating, even for an Obama supporter: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?o=0&f=/c/a/2008/01/18/MNSNUH8DR.DTL.

Get informed and then go vote for Obama! The only choice if we want to win in November!

This may seem pity to allot of people, but what could Hillary have be thinking when she blows out of town last night without a thank you to her supporters? Pretending the states weren't on the map. Then appears a sore loser by not congratulating Senator Obama his wins. Only 12 hours later because of bad press did she make that correction. I don't know who is adviser her but seems she needs to do some more firing.

when she wins she sticks around for the smiles...

when she isnt even supposed to be there
( michigan/florida) she throws a party...

The Clinton's continue to attack Senator Obama on his experience his inability to stand up against the republicans etc. This is what I say to that...well so far he's doing pretty well against you "two". While you're having to hire and fire folks and pump money into your campaign, he's running a well tuned successful campaign. Just a few months ago Hillary was all but declared the nominee, how did such experience establishment insiders find themselves in this position? Senator Obama comes out of no where and leading. I would say he is the person who is ready on day one!

Um, you got a source for that, Sam?

Because I don't think even Hillary Clinton thinks she has a shot at Arizona in a general election against John McCain.

Still, this is the first time I've thought of this. I just go around thinking "my vote will count," like a dumb ninny, forgetting that whole electoral, state-by-state thing that bushed my country in 2000. I'm glad I'm in a purple state. More of your "red" states are purple than y'all may realize, too.

Dear Red State Dems -

Please stop all this whining.

Everybody knows that the Clintons are the most brilliant political minds on the scene right now.

So if they say you are all a bunch of losers, and useless to the cause, then...well...YOU ARE.

What in the world are you people thinking of, living in these bastions of retardation aka republicanism? Are you six-toed trogdolytes who marry your cousins, too?

We'll do just fine doing what we always do: concentrating on the big coastal states, and pretty much ignoring you from here on in. It's ok...because Hillary knows...and who knows better than her?

And please - don't yammer on about 1984. That was a book title, not an election.

Sincerely,

Your Friend OTAYPANKY

How in the world can Mrs. Clinton be defending the same strategy that has been disastrous to her campaign in the primaries as the strategy to win the general election? Had she focused on smaller and "red" states from the get go, there's no doubt in my mind she'd be the presumptive, if not outright, Democratic nominee. Electability has as much to do with campaign strategy as it does to do with the candidate. Her strategy, not looking so good right now. Her candidacy, looking okay. Besides she's aggravating democratic party insiders that are either superdelegates or know them well--also, not a great strategy at this point.

I'm getting much pleasure frankly seeing the Clinton's struggle -- because what I'm seeing is the old establishment is dieing out. The old tricks and game plays don't work anymore, the citizens of the country have woken up and spoken -- the status quo is no longer acceptable. I was watching McCain on TV today, all around him the old relics of the pass; Just makes you scream for change. The Clinton's and McCain are the pass this country is ready for a new direction, new ideas and fresh air pumped into Washington.

Obama told you four years ago, and repeats it to this day: he sees no red states or blue states, just the United States.

Apparently, Hillary just wants to be President of the Blue States of America.

Here's the thing in a nutshell. If Obama is the nominee, states like Virginia and Louisiana are "in play" for the Democrats.

If Hillary is the nominee, states like Illinois are in play for McCain.

I HOPE. That in the next debate Obama himself ask Clinton if she will continue to take contributions from lobbyist with their own interest in politics? We all know that the democratic candidates are quite similar in their policies and that the only thing keeping her in the race is name recognition! If she was just another candidate running a campaign without the Clinton badge, this wouldn't even be close!

that would be an excellent question 2live..
i'd love to see him ask her that....can you imagine the lecture/spin that would follow...
herself never directly answers QUESTIONS...

FYI NO SPIN

Err...Heads up to anyone donating to Sen. Hillary Clinton... This is not good for you.... Info you provided may be "rented out" By the Clinton campaign to InfoUSA

Clinton InfoUSA Ties Scrutinized

Political campaigns spend thousands, even millions of dollars to acquire good mailing lists.

Last year, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton took the unusual step of renting out some of her lists. The transaction once again highlights the Clintons' connections to a businessman who now faces questions from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

John Kerry GAVE my info to Obama...I didn't get any email or snail mail asking my permission...??? I was 'subscribed' to the Obama news brief that I did NOT request and during the AZ vote, I got call after call from Obama supporters even tho I told them I had already voted for another candidate by mail and to "Stop Calling!" THAT is a violation of my information.

Party registration lists, via zip code are generally available to candidates.

The SALE of those lists is a major violation.

I'm surprised the Clinton's would do this.

This is a MAJOR story and cuts across several issues. National Public Radio has done some important research.

It may tie into the fact that Clinton's are unwilling to release their tax returns. Also, due to substance of NPR's reportage it would appear that could even have a tie-in to why the Clinton's are unwilling to release the income tax returns to the public.

Here in Utah, I guarantee a repug win. BUT I"ll also guarantee some very big democratic gains. A lot of Mormons I"ve spoken with are very disillusioned by the hostile response of the religious right to a Mormon candidate. It"ll be interesting to watch the blowback in the coming years.

We democrats welcome Mormons with open arms. We may not agree on social issues but if they need a home, we're the melting pot of American politics!
