Officials at several state Democratic Parties are taking exception and disagreed with statements by Sen. Hillary Clinton that seemingly write off the electoral relevance of their states.

In the wake of loses to Barack Obama in last weekend's slew of primaries, Clinton sought to minimize the political fallout by noting that several of the victories came from traditionally Republican-leaning states.

"It is highly unlikely we will win Alaska or North Dakota or Idaho or Nebraska," she told reporters. "But we have to win Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, Michigan ... And we've got to be competitive in places like Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma."

On Monday, the former first lady went a step further saying that it would take a "tsunami change in America," for Democrats to carry some of Obama's red states. "It's just not going to happen," she told ABC7 and Politico.

The premise of the argument was disputed by Democratic officials from several of those states, who say the landscape is ripe for the party to make inroads, and see the strategy of writing off the "red states" as antiquated.

"Their campaign has to work on where they are right now," said Matt Connealy, Executive Director of the Nebraska Democratic Party. "I don't think even Clinton should leave these predominantly red states alone. I think that is a recipe that has not proven to be effective in the past."

Indeed, the current argument over how and where Democrats should concentrate their resources mirrors similar disagreements that arose when Howard Dean took over as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Then and now the questions were: Is the party best served securing victories in voter-rich swing states? Or can it build up enough support (and drain GOP money in the process) by nationalizing its operation?

"I think a lot of folks here have seen the failed policies of the Bush administration time and again and they are getting tired of this country not moving in a positive direction," said Rick Gion, communications director of the North Dakota Democratic Party. "If there was a year that North Dakotans would go for Democrats this would be one of the best ones."

Story continues below

"We've had Democratic governors over the years. We've had Democratic legislatures. We've had a number of Democratic leaders elected to office," said Kay Brown, communications director for the Alaska Democratic Party. "Certainly it is possible [for a Democratic presidential candidate to win]. I think the Alaska is more closely divide then what you see in Congress."

The reality, of course, is far more daunting than these party officials let on. While Democrats in Alaska have been aided by ethics scandals of high-ranking GOP officials, the state is still predominantly Republican: 61 percent of the populace voted for George Bush in 2004. In North Dakota that number was 63 percent. And in Nebraska it was 66 percent.

But the same holds true in Texas and Oklahoma -- two states cited by Clinton as places where Democrats have to be "competitive" -- where Bush won 61 percent and 66 percent of the vote respectively. Clinton's campaign has trumpeted her win in Oklahoma's Democratic primary.

And yet, officials say, the benefits are worth the costs. Campaigning in the traditionally GOP states, Connealy notes "will get the base motivated and force the Republicans to spend resources."

And, he adds, you might be surprised: "If we make the ask in red states, people are willing to respond."

Well it is kind of odd don't you think she really wants our votes in Florida ... but she could care less about other states ... apparently all things are not equal ... who ever said the Clintons have any class, or integrity or respect for voters or the intelligence of the those who vote in the primaries?

Duhhhhh. Equal??? Did you ever hear of something called "electoral votes"?

California has 55 of them. Utah has 2. And Obama is NUTS if he thinks that winnnig a stupid caucus means that he is going to win over a red state!

Florida and Michigan combined have 44 electoral votes. Second only to California. And gutless Obama does not push for a re-vote in FL and MI.

If he's so freeking POPULAR, as he is always BRAGGING that he is, then why is he CHICKEN to do a revote in FL and MI?

Why? Because he would LOSE!

It isn't up to Obama to schedule a revote in Florida or Michigan. Hillary is pushing for it because she needs the delegates.

I beg to differ. Most of us in Michigan have not voted because our candidates were not on the ballot. If you think Hillary will carry Michigan, consider this: One of the largest counties (Wayne County with 45% African American), voted 60% "Uncommited". That's a vote against Clinton.
Wayne county is the single reason, the democrates carried Michigan in the past.
In a MI Re-vote, Hillary will loose big. Considering that She alieanated the African Americans, and everyone else for that matter, the Republicans have a real chance to win Michigan if Hillary is the nominee.

I say the Clinton's have class and integrity and respect for the voters. On the intelligence issue it is apparent the Red states have a problem in this area as indicated by their support for Bush. BTW: I live in a red state, Nevada.

A vote for Hillary is a vote for the Nanny State. She's already showing her true colors, treating the electorate as if we were brain dead.

Shrillary is a sore loser. I have *never* seen her thank her supporters in those states she lost! Oh, but wait, she still wants your fucking money so be sure to send it, even though I dismiss and devalue you and your state.

Just say NO already: no to the baggage, scandal, and shame that Billary would bring back to the White House.

This is yet another reason why I won't support Hillary. According to her, any state that doesn't vote for her is irrelevant. This woman has no class. Has anyone noticed how she never thanks her supporters in the states where she loses? For example, when it was clear that she was going to lose big in South Carolina, she quickly got on a plane and flew out to California. At least Obama is gracious enough to thank the people who voted for him even in states that he loses. And do we really want a nominee who's already written off the red states? How bout a nominee who wants to be President of all the states and not just the ones that supported her.

She also lumps Hispanics into one category although there are several ethnicities included in that group, e.g. Spanish, Cuban, Mexican, etc. Total disrespect.

I'm surprised any of them support her at all.

Just why would you expect her to thank a state where over 70% of the blacks voted for race. Seems kind of racist to me but like Michele Obama said "they just do not get it" referring to fellow blacks. Appearantly they do get it since their support has grown to as high as 90%.

Blacks are not voting for Billary because they played the race card in a very ugly way. Blacks trusted and admired the Clintons, until they saw with their own eyes how duplicitous they really are. If they hadn't done that, the black vote would have been split.

Now, people such as yourself are placing blame on the wrong person. With people like you, willing to believe whatever, no wonder we wound up with that incompetent piece of shit George Bush. As far as I can see, those corrupt and despicable Clintons made their own bed.

You know for a couple who pride themselves on their purported brilliant strategic abilities, they really don't get it. Oh wait, they DO get it, they are just trying to deceive voters again by lying to them, classy.

Obama's power in red/purple states is huge, and should never be downplayed:

Would you try to be a little more specific about the lies. I went several Clinton rally's here in Nevada and the Obama campaign seemed to have more trouble with the truth than the Clinton's. If you disagree with them they scream racism.

The gall of this woman! States in which she loses Democratic primaries and caucuses don't matter. States where Obama wins caucuses and primaries are insignificant. La di dah, la di dah. And caucuses don't matter period because they're not primaries. It also does not mattter that she agreed not to campaign in Florida and Michigan and knew the delegates would not be seated BEFORE the primaries. Now she's changed her mind. La di dah, la di dah.

She can't manage her own staff, her own campaign, her own husband, and her own finances. But she's going to be ready to manage the country from day one? Are you fucking kidding me?

Is Chelsea going to be her running mate? Why not? Even Chelsea has more experience than Barack Obama. Hell's bells, Chelsea spent eight years in the White House! She's ready from day one, too.

Any state that does not vote for Hillary Clinton should not have its votes counted and Florida and Michigan should count. This proves beyond any doubt that Clinton feels the democratic party counts only if it supports her and that she has a divine right to all delegates. Clintonian democracy has its own logic.

I believe it's called "entitlement," and the Clintons have it in spades. Look, to be a national politician, you have to be a little narcissistic. But Bush and the Clintons play in the area of pathological narcissism. Narcissism that will do and say ANYTHING to continue to bolster one's own inflated sense of self. That's why Bill and Hillary are dangerous people that we DO NOT need in the WH for the next 4 years.

Obama won Missouri, Colorado, Minnesota, Virginia, Maryland. All states are in play for Democrats. If we win Missouri and Virginia the Dems take the White House.

DLC thinking is why she's failing. It's what lost us the House & Senate all through the 90s and why it will again if she somehow becomes the nominee.

It's why Obama must win.

Like Howard Dean, Barack Obama is thinking 50-states, not just the easy states.

What is Hillary trying to accomplish by writing off the newly emerging Democrats in those "traditionally Republican-leaning" states?

Discourage them, and make winning the election - should she gain the nomination - more difficult?

Sour grapes doesn't help her or her Party.
