Sharpton: Don't Seat Fla., Mich.

WASHINGTON — Seating delegates from Florida and Michigan at the Democratic National Convention would be a grave injustice, the Rev. Al Sharpton said Wednesday in a break with prominent civil rights leaders.

"I firmly believe that changing the rules now, and seating delegates from Florida and Michigan at this point would not only violate the Democratic Party's rules of fairness, but also would be a grave injustice," Sharpton said in a letter to Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean.

"As former presidential candidates we both know that, whether we liked them or not, we adhered to the rules set forth by the Democratic Party to select its nominee for president."

Sharpton, a black activist and radio talk show host, sought the presidency in 2004.

NAACP chairman Julian Bond also wrote Dean recently, taking the opposite position. Bond said failure to seat the delegates would disenfranchise minority voters in Florida and Michigan.

Former U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Chairwoman Mary Frances Berry and former Justice Department official Roger Wilkins also wrote Dean urging the DNC settle the issue before the convention for the good of the party.

Berry _ who oversaw the 2001 report that studied the disputed 2000 Florida election and found thousands of voters, particularly black voters, were disenfranchised _ said she is also concerned about disenfranchisement of Michigan and Florida voters, although she didn't make a recommendation on how the DNC should resolve the dispute.

The DNC penalized Michigan and Florida for moving their primaries to earlier dates in violation of party rules. Both states were stripped of their delegates, and the party's presidential candidates signed a pledge not to campaign in either state. Florida lost all 210 delegates, including its superdelegates; Michigan, 156.

Since then, waging a hard-fought delegate battle with Sen. Barack Obama, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign has pushed hard for both states' delegations to be seated. Clinton won Florida's primary Jan. 29 and Michigan's Jan. 15, but was the only candidate to appear on the Michigan ballot after the other candidates removed their names.

Sharpton said he disagreed with those who say minority voters in Florida and Michigan will be disenfranchised.

"That claim, if true, should have been made many months ago before the decision was made to strip these states of their delegates, and, once the decision was made, it should have been vigorously objected to and contested by those who felt it disenfranchised voters," Sharpton wrote. "To raise that claim now smacks of politics in its form most raw and undercuts the moral authority behind such an argument."

The DNC has said it would allow both states to hold a different contest, probably a caucus, that would comply with party rules. Either state can also appeal the penalty to the DNC credentials committee, which will not meet again until this summer.

The staged faintings, the mass hysteria by the corporate press the inspirational speeches (written by speechwriters) the invoking Martin Luther King...sort of like Johnny Cochran with OJ's jury...the press making Obama like "the Rapture"........is anyone seeing through this crap like I am?
You can bet your a_ _that if Obama had won Mi and Florida Al Sharpton would be screaming to the rooftops to seat those delegates for the brother...who's he trying to kid!

is it legal to tell someone who does not have a felony conviction that they can't vote if they are an american citizen?

Isn't that more illegal?

Legal? Level playing field? Stacked deck? Disenfranchised...even though the rules were clearly explained to all parties involved... & party bosses decided... We'll do as we please! The Dems are their own worst enemies...

The "follow my party right or wrong mantra wont work this time around". Not too many card carrying dem party members in this batch of voters.... Just my opinion.

Yeah I know ... the superdelegates arn't fair either? Wonder why?

day after Super Tuesday, on the February 6, 2008, edition of CNN's Situation Room, Democratic political consultant, Super-delegate-at-Large and DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee member Donna Brazile said:

"If 795 of my colleagues decide this election, I will quit the Democratic Party. I feel very strongly about this. ... There's no reason why we should decide this election. I feel very strongly."

Interesting, very interesting.

Why? Because Donna Brazile, speaking at the September 28, 2007, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 37th Annual Legislative Conference forum on The Future of Black Politics, in which "Panelists talked about the presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama and what it signals for other black candidates," said in regards to Super Tuesday

Over 45% of our delegates will be chosen on that day and if you don't think that we have political power, just wait until February 5th, 2008, we can determine the next nominee of the Democratic Party. We can also expand the number of African Americans who are holding political power. We can also build upon the success of Barack Obama. ... We have enormous political power and its time that we leverage it, and we build upon it, and we expand it...

In fact there are TV shows that lay out the ground work to teach us how to manipulate, sneak and WIN! It's our culture.

DNC Strips Florida Of 2008 Delegates

Judge OKs DNC sanctions over Fla. primary

The American electorate never learns till it too late. Oh well

What Howard Dean neglected to mention about the DNC Credentials Committee

The DNC Credentials The DNC Credentials Committee is made up of 3 people. Those 3 people ALL SERVED in the Cinton Administration

That leads us to the three co-chairs of the DNC Credentials Committee: Alexis Herman, James Roosevelt, Jr. and Aliseo Roques-Arroyo. All three of them served in the Clinton Administration. Okay, as far as we know they are all reputable, upstanding people, but if you were Hillary Clinton and these three people worked for you and your husband during the 8 presidential years Hillary includes on her "35 years of experience," wouldn't you feel like you might have some influence on the three co-chairs? After all, the decision of the DNC Credentials Committee will be political; this is not a judicial process.

The reason he opposes NAACP in seating of the MI and FL delegates is because he wants to be relevant in this argument should Obama becomes the candidate. Al Sharpton's strategy is to become more public in his defense and pursuit of a spot in Obama administration. Al Sharpton is a selfish man who only cares about his public value and relevant not the people he forcefully represents. He is disengenuous and irrelevant; he should stay out of Obama's way and stop making trouble on his behalf and go back to the 60s. Besides, NAACP is an organization with goals and objectives true to its acronym while Al only looks after himself.

I say go away Al. Stop riding on Obama's coattails.

The rules allow the states to petition the convention credential’s seating committee to have their delegates seated at the convention. It is entirely up this committee to decide if they will allow the delegates the credentials to be seated. They may require the states to hold another primary or caucus, before they allow any delegates from these state or they may just let the finalized counts from the primaries to stand. Now that is what I call super power.

Wow, I agree with Sharpton on something? Incredible times, these.

The only correct approach is to not seat the delegates. Having one name on the ballot is a grosser violation of fairness. The fact that Clinton did not take her name off the ballot like the rest of the candidates shows how opportunistic HRC has been since the start.

I agree with him also. I was hoping a day like this would never come.

But I can rest easy knowing that, for me, not changing the rules in the middle of the game is a fundamental fairness issue.

For Mr. Sharpton, I am sure there is an angle being played somewhere.

Senator Clinton's name was not the only one on the ballot. Kuchinic, Gravel, Biden, and Richardson were on there as well. In fact, the only two not on there out of the originals were John Edwards and Senator Obama.

* Al Sharpton's Obama "Spiritual Mentor" Connection Problem ... A Conflict of Interest When It Comes To Honest Civil Rights Advocacy For Disenfranchised Minority Voters in Michigan -&- Florida! *

"The title of Obama's best-seller, The Audacity of Hope, comes from a sermon given by Rev. Jeremiah Wright." Jeremiah Wright, is widely reported to be Barack Obama's "spiritual mentor."

As of late, Sharpton seemingly is trying to appear objective in this '08 Democratic presidential nominee process, and has seemingly yet to endorse any one candidate. But according to Al Sharpton's own NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK website, Jeri Wright, daughter of renowned preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright, [Obama's "spiritual mentor"], is President of Chicago’s National Action Network Organizational Chapter., rendering Sharpton's advocacy on this issue, a political conflict of interest, and the DNC and NAACP should put a stop to it; immediately!

In Al Sharpton seemingly being against having Michigan/Florida delegates seated, ...yet at the same time has the daughter of Obama's "spiritual mentor" ... working for/with Al Sharpton's NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK, in Chicago, Illinois, ... Obama's hometown, Sharpton's advocacy in this two-state Dem primary election problem, unfairly politically benefits only Obama, ... at the expense of minority voters in Michigan -&- Florida! Sharpton needs to do the right thing by recusing himself from this civil rights voting matter, and step aside to let the remaining honest civil-rights-leaders protect the voting rights for minorities in Michigan and Florida, so that their delegates get seated properly seated at the '08 Democratic Convention, which is the ethically correct thing to do.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. And on this subject Sharpton is spot on. To change the rules now - in the middle of the contest - would be a grave injustice. Let our eventual nominee, whoever he or she is, get the nomination the old fashioned way: earning it WITHIN THE RULES.

Good news.

In response to pressure, NAACP chairman Julian Bond issued a press release Wednesday afternoon joining the chorus calling for new contests in Florida and Michigan.

"It is possible now for the DNC and Chairman Dean to develop a new alternative voting system – like a state caucus – for Democrats in Florida or Michigan, so their voices will be heard and their votes will be counted.

"The NAACP has fought for fairness in elections of all sorts since our founding days, and will continue to do so in the future."

This is NOT "good news." This is poppycock, or, what some of us call "bulls***." We have to have NO reason to doubt the LEGITIMACY of our eventual nominee. The best thing that Michigan an Florida can do for their country is to play by the rules, like a good citizen should.
