Specter: Belichick Was Taping Since 2000

WASHINGTON — Bill Belichick has been illegally taping opponents' defensive signals since he became the New England Patriots' coach in 2000, according to Sen. Arlen Specter, who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told him that during a meeting Wednesday.

"There was confirmation that there has been taping since 2000, when Coach Belichick took over," Specter said.

Specter said Goodell gave him that information during the 1-hour, 40-minute meeting, which was requested by Specter so the commissioner could explain his reasons for destroying the Spygate tapes and notes.

"There were a great many questions answered by Commissioner Goodell," Specter, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters after the meeting. "I found a lot of questions unanswerable because of the tapes and notes had been destroyed."

Goodell said Belichick told him he believed the taping was legal; Goodell said he did not concur.

"He said that's always been his interpretation since he's been the head coach," the commissioner said. "We are going to agree to disagree on the facts."

Specter, from Pennsylvania, wants to talk to other league officials about what exactly was taped and which games may have been compromised.

"We have a right to have honest football games," he said.

Goodell noted that "we were the ones that disclosed" the Patriots' illegal taping of the New York Jets' defensive signals in Week 1 of last season. Further, Goodell said, they had an admission by Belichick.

"I have nothing to hide," Goodell said.

Goodell also told Specter that that he doesn't regret destroying the Spygate tapes or the notes.

"I think it was the right thing to do," Goodell said.

Still, Specter wants to know why penalties were imposed on Belichick before the full extent of the wrongdoing was known and the tapes destroyed in a two-week span. Asked if he thinks there was a coverup, Specter demurred.

"There was an enormous amount of haste," Specter said.

He scoffed at the reasons Goodell gave for destroying the tapes and notes, particularly about trying to keep them out of competitors' hands and because Belichick had admitted to the taping.

"What's that got to do with it? There's an admission of guilt, you preserve the evidence," Specter said. As for keeping the tapes out of the hands of others: "All you have to do is lock up the tapes."

Belichick was fined $500,000 and the team was fined $250,000 because of the Spygate incident. The Patriots also forfeited a first-round draft pick.

Specter has questioned the quality of the NFL's investigation into the matter and raised the possibility of congressional hearings if he wasn't satisfied with Goodell's answers. Specter also raised the threat of Congress canceling the league's antitrust exemption and reiterated that in the meeting with Goodell.

Goodell also said he has not heard from Matt Walsh, the former Patriots employee who performed some videotaping duties for the team.

Walsh told The Associated Press last week during the Pro Bowl in Hawaii that he couldn't talk about allegations that he taped a walkthrough practice by the St. Louis Rams before the 2002 Super Bowl. New England, a two-touchdown underdog, won that game 20-17.

Goodell said he has offered Walsh a deal whereby "he has to tell the truth and he has to return anything he took improperly" in return for indemnity. Specter said he, too, wanted to talk to Walsh and perhaps offer a different deal.

Goodell also said he reserves the right to reopen the investigation if more information is uncovered.

Specter, why don't you focus more of your efforts on the illegal spying done by your President and endorsed by your party? Instead, you feel it's more important to devote your time to the taping of some football team's "defensive signals"? No wonder your party will go down in a huge defeat this November.

Specter and the other senators are showing you what a real elected senators would do if they gave a d... about out constitution, bill of rights and democracy which they do not support.
We know our country has gone to h... when our elected officials spent their "our time and taxes" investigating their favorite sport because it might be corrupted, while they support and protect the biggest criminals our government has ever seen.
Bush's criminal mob is stronger and larger than the mob of Al Capone one of America's best known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United States during the 1920s Prohibition ...

Bush and Cheney started their tapping and data mining program as soon as they took office before 911.
So why do our stupid a.. democrats say giving Bush the power to spying and know when Americans use the john, he can stop terrorist.
H... Bush and Cheney knowing that the attack of 911 was coming could not stop that.
We need to start in the White House.
President Bush said ; the terrorist are finding new and better ways of killing us and "So are We", and Bush has a better records of destroying and killing Americans then Bin Laden and his group.
Over 4,000 dead , over 40,000 wounded , 10 to 20 percent of all soldiers return with mental problems, over 1,000,000,000 Iraq's citizens dead and or missing.
Bin Laden or terrorist could have done this to our country , But Bush has in just 7 years , we have went for prosperity to a recession.
complete destruction of our social program/economy/roads/security/nation guards/military/jobs/manufacturing plants/education/resources/constitution/bill of rights/democracy.

If the taping was illegal, just what law was broken? Someone help me out here.

If the taping of a football game was illegal , why in the h... do our senators and house of representatives believe that their(really corporations) complete data mining of actions/personal information on American citizens are legal.

We need this government out of office "NOW".

Our government is now telling us that they will pick the candidate 'and or' president of our country and our voting process is inconvenient for them because they have set our dates to vote, which in now inconvenient for them.

It is time to tell them they have to go, we will not stand for any more of their BS.

Our forefathers setup laws and policies for the wishes/needs/rights of the citizens of this nation, not for the same type of government in Britain which we had fought a revolution to get rid of.

Wow -- what happened?

Did they run out of missing white women to distract us from the fact the country is being run by a criminal gang, that the middle class is being destroyed, that the infrastructure is crumbling under our feet, that we have become a rogue nation, that our government is now spying on us with impunity, and that the corporations are stealing all our money?

I will put the "secret taping" on my list of things to get upset about right after "lint accumulating in my sock drawer."

Specter and the others are wasting the taxpayers money investigating a kids game played by men. A game, a show, an entertainment that has it's own regulatory board.
Congress should be dealing with ending our involvement in Iraq and Afganistan instead of they bankrupting the country and having a negative effect on our future security, helping to solve the energy crisis with national programs, and the help the under-employed poor.
If anyone needs to be investigated for suspected criminal action, it is Specter.
His invlovement in covering up the Kennedy assination through his position on the Warren comission, his belief in a magic super bullet shot by some demented fool is highly suspect.
This government involvement in sports is a dog and pony propaganda show to distract the population and a criminal waste of money. Each Congressman is showboating for re-election.
As it is, they have a proven liar ex-cop testifying he has illegal drugs. Still he walks free. Should he not be served a warrant? The liar may have tampered with his, "Evidence" as it applies to others, yet he claims proof that he himself is guilty of illegal posession of drugs. He should be prosceuted for that but it sure doesn't take a congressional hearing.
This is a waste of tax money. Our elected representatives continue to sell the people out on ever more outgrageous levels.
Investigate Specter.

I lost all respect for Specter in his continual support for the criminal crimes of Bush/Cheney.

Spector runs off at the mouth as if he is concern and will investigate the criminal crimes of Bush/Cheney , but then behide closed doors he not only supports them , he insert more power for them..

We have to stop bitching and start planning actions to stop our military-industrial complex , before Blackwater is at every American citizen's door....

If you studied Hitler's actions in Germany in the 1920's , you will see there comes a time when it gets to late to stop deciders.

The Patriots are the slimiest, dirtiest most dis-likable team in the history of Sports. They cheat and cheat and cheat again... they get the commish to destroy evidence for them because he is friends with their owner...

ARGH! Patriots players on HGH in the playoffs, videotaping signals during the games, taping the walk through before the Super Bowl. Goodell is guilty of a cover up and there is NO EXCUSE for destroying the evidence. This makes me mad.

Maybe the other teams should do what they do in baseball - HIDE THEIR SIGNALS!!!!

How is it cheating if the other team uses signals where they can be seen?

Remember the good ole days when trying to get an edge comprised of working harder, better training, taking care of employees so they took better care of you, listening instead of projecting, etc... Now, unfortunately, the edge in business and sports involves spying, cheating, lying, selling out employees and just in general dishonesty.

This is the new trickle down from our current leadership. You see this effect coming to fruition in the police department (excessive force), sports (win at any cost), in the workforce (hey, we got rich on our emplyees backs, lets sell them out for cheaper labor overseas) and in business (Enron, WalMart, etc...). Sigh...

My God... who cares? I'm not a fan either way of football, but the way I see it, if a coach is making hand signals that anyone could see and they happen to get taped, that's his problem. There's nothing wrong with using all the tools at your disposal to win, so long as you're not hurting anyone.

Hey, why not bug them as well, I mean they're over there calling plays, lets listen in... And once everyone knows whats going to happen before it happens lets just not play.
There is a huge difference when you now beforehand whats going to happen, as oppossed to adjusting to a play you've seen before on the field.

They also have, as the article mentions, an anti-trust exemption. They also take billions in taxpayer money to finance stadiums, in tax breaks and other economic incentives. Each are big but both together are a HUGE financial boon.

It is a corporate industry with special standing.

What we are talking about with the Partiots doesn't quite reach, but enters the realm of fixing games. The payoff for the Patriots for all their success has been HUGE!

And like baseball, there is all kinds of law breaking going on while they seem to be their own cops, brushing it all under the rug. Steriods, cheating, yada yada yada.

It's like pedophile priests policing themselves...it ain't just a sin, IT'S ILLEGAL!

Personally I think Congress having to deal with this shit is stupid with everything that's going on. But I also think that with all the public money and their anti-trust exemptions, they should at least get them under some kind of control.

But hey, leadership comes from the top. And these days breakin the law seems to be in fashion all the way to the white house.

Lest you not forget it was ARLEN SPECTER who crafted the single bullet theory, which made the coverup of the JFK assassination possible. As a junior lawyer on the Warren Commission, he controlled the selection of witnesses and bullied witnesses, who saw things Specter didn't want revealed to the country. I have over 200 books on the JFK assassination and am horrified how the big money is today producing lots of "Oswald Did It" movies and stuff to put the final nail in Kennedy's coffin. Today's government is a result of the Warren Commission's coverup of the real truth. RESEARCH! Read "Whitewash" by Harold Weisberg or "Forgive My Grief-series" by Penn Jones Jr. Then you will know.

What are we teaching our children about the integrity of our system of government when the government investigates sports figures while elected representatives and appointed officials lie, disregard subpeonas, engage in election fixing, and award government contracts to their sponsors without consequence? We denegrate our system of government while we suggest that what happens in professional sports is more important! Specter should be focusing on the issues that he's been hiding from for the last four years. It's time for the author of the one-bullet theory to be outed as a fraud and then outed from the Senate.

The NFL obviously didn't learn from MLB's mistake.

When allegations arise that threaten the integrity of the game, they can't just be swept under the rug and they wont just go away.

Ditto to all the previous comments regarding the priority Specter is giving this issue. While it may make for good entertainment on the evening news this is not the most important issue our Congress should be using their time on. With torture, Iraq, Afghanistan, a failing economy, illegal wiretapping, corporate profiteering and corruption, social programs being defunded and unemployment rising our Congress is wasting time, money and energy to divert our attention and resources from what they should be investigating. Let the NFL and the Baseball league look into and these issues. People will either continue to support their overpayed, doped up athletes or they won't

When Specter and Waxman were asked by reporters,

"What are the most troubling issues facing the

American people today."

Specter relied, "Returning integrity to FOOTBALL!"

Waxman replied, "Returning integrity to BASEBALL!"

Proof - Republicans and Dems can work together.

LOL
