Clinton Superdelegates

Boston Globe's Political Intelligence:

Hillary Clinton will take the Democratic nomination even if she does not win the popular vote, but persuades enough superdelegates to vote for her at the convention, her campaign advisers say.

The New York senator, who lost three primaries Tuesday night, now lags slightly behind her rival, Illinois Senator Barack Obama, in the delegate count. She is even further behind in "pledged'' delegates, those assigned by virtue of primaries and caucuses.

But Clinton will not concede the race to Obama if he wins a greater number of pledged delegates by the end of the primary season, and will count on the 796 elected officials and party bigwigs to put her over the top, if necessary, said Clinton's communications director, Howard Wolfson.

This is exactly why the Obama campaign can't afford to rest on its laurels until the fat lady sings (or cries).

Mr. Obama needs to continue beating Clinton by 20+ points in every possible state (and pulling even or close in all the others) to win as many delegates & popular votes as possible, in order to make it extremely difficult for the superdelegates NOT to back his candidacy.

Since the Clintons will spin, twist, bend, or break every rule to win, humiliating them into defeat is the ONLY way to throw out the Clintons into the dustheap of history.

If it makes you feel any better, I completely agree with your sentiments.

Thats not humiliating them, that is just simply winning. Which of course, solves the problem.

If Hillary cheats to get the nomination, then I will vote for McCain.

I am right there with you. If she thwarts the public will, then she doesn't deserve to be president. I'd sooner take the Bush clone, McCain.

This is the best news so far.

Several of my Clinton-supporting friends blanch at this idea and tell me they are finally strongly considering abandoning their support for the New York senator.

Wonderful.

The Clinton campaign has, in essence, announced its opposition to the core ideal of democracy.

What does it mean to the average voter - normal folks (not wonks) that believe in the democratic ideals upon which our country and our party were founded?

It says that Hillary and Bill Clinton stand firmly for . . . themselves. They are willing to CAST OUT the votes of Americans, because their quest for personal power is more important than the welfare of their nation and their party.

FINALLY, they have shown their true face. All the masks, all the false defenses of war votes and pro-credit card company bills will melt away in an instant.

Why?

Because VOTERS REALLY CARE ABOUT THIS. They really do believe their opinion should matter more than any superdelegate - even the two most super delegates of all, whose election the old guard elites believe should have been guaranteed as a matter of dynastic succession.

This decision, announced by Howard Wolfson, shall (if our party is to retain any relevance in the new era of active voter involvement in the field of politics) be recorded as the beginning of the end of the Clinton's campaign.

I know you won't stop your spin, but whatever.

THIS IS NOT GENERAL ELECTION PEOPLE, THAT'S IN NOVEMBER!!

This is a party, a political organization, with ideology and strategy, nominating a candidate. It's has nothing to do with popular vote.

As I recall, Senator Clinton won New York. So then their voice really is for the Super Delagates of New York to vote for Clinton. Or should they not listen to the voice of their State by voting for Obama because other states told them to? (Assuming he wins the popular vote which has not yet been established.)

I think you're exactly right. People are not going to stand for this. Despite their unscrupulous candidate, Clinton supporters are zesty, informed and engaged citizens and this kind of thing flies right in the face of what they, and Obama people stand for. I think we'll see Clinton people abandoning ship because of this tactic, as well they should.

I really wish Hillary hadn't said this. My particular choice is whoever wins the Democratic primaries, but this doesn't bode well.

This win at any cost is why Hillary has a high negative poll numbers. With Hillary claiming to have won Michigan and Florida even though they had agreed not to put their names on the ballot, she did and wants those delegates.

I wish Gore was running and not Hillary. Gore respected the rule of law, though we all wish the Supreme Court had ruled differently, it showed his character, and this shows her character.

If Gore allowed Florida to be uncounted without a fight (even just for show) they'd revolt against him. And the public would lose faith in him and Obama would have swept through making the Super Delagates irrelevant.

If they were to try and pull such a stunt that the damage they would do to the party would cripple her in the general election.

The GOP would have a field day with such a
stunt.

If she wins fair and square, so be it. But if
she tries and pulls a fast one the amount of
people she would disinfranchise would be huge.

Agreed. But do not underestimate the fury that would result is Clinton does as the article claims. It would destroy the Democratic Party as a viable political force in American politics.

If she wins outright, so be it and I'll support her. But if Obama is the clear choice in the primaries and caucuses yet Clinton finagles a "back room" deal, it will be ruin. And the GOP will benefit.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one. Be warned, Senator Clinton.

Hillary is miscalculating again. First she took the nomination for granted. Then she showed a lack of leadership by mismanaging her campaign. She has succeeded in dividing the democratic voters along race, gender, activists, etc.. She does not bring new voters (independents, young, moderate republicans) to the table. She is clearly a liability to the democratic party and I don't think this party will self destroy to accommodate her big ego.

Leave it to the Democrats to **ck up an easy win. My god get the circular firing squad out, the Dems are about to commit murder against their own party. Talk about not caring about your party. Heck I like to see it, either way it will be the end of the Clintons.

If this a new Hillary for any of you; then go to Google Search and pull up the names of Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund, Lani Guinier tenured law professor of Harvard and Dr Joycelyn Elders former Surgeon General.
Take maybe 10 to 12 minutes to discover how the Clintons threw these three highly regarded Black Professional Women off of the train in the most despicable of fashions.
These are the most self-centered people one could imagine and when the Republicans get through with them they truly will be "fully vetted!"

Yes, and Hillary still markets her time with Marian Wright Edelman and the Children's Defense Fund because of the tremendous respect in which that organization is held. If all the people who BELIEVE SHE STILL HAS A RELATIONSHIP WITH MARIAN, KNEW HOW TERRIBLE SHE HAS BEEN TO MARIAN...EVEN FEWER PEOPLE WOULD SPEAK TO HILLARY CLINTON. Her reputation is what's beating her...not Obama...You can only do so much of BS because your Karma comes back to bite you in your extra large panty hose.
