Dennis Miller

From this morning's Page Six:

Dennis Miller doesn't have much luck with sports. He was unceremoniously dumped by ABC as a commentator for "Monday Night Football" in 2002, and now his Versus cable channel show, "Sports Unfiltered With Dennis Miller," looks destined for the scrap heap after just three months. "Frankly, it doesn't look good," a former staffer tells Santa Barbara News-Press columnist Richard Mineards.

Previously: "Unless you're a connoisseur of the high artform known as "A.M. talk," you might not be aware that the smarmy, smirky, obscure-reference-loving comedian/commentator Dennis Miller has recently RADICALLY REINVENTED himself as a smarmy, smirky, obscure-reference-loving right wing radio host." — Eli Braden, "Dennis Miller's Got A Brand New Bag," 23/6

That picture looks like Dennis has been boozing it up quite a bit. There is no way he can ever go back to gay porn. Maybe he can be Karl Roves blow pig.

I think the Right seem unable to 'get it.'

They had a heyday with President Clinton whose administration provided by its mistakes, fumbling, failures and scandals justification for annoying the American public.

Things appear different now. I hope!

It's good this fool is getting axed. His childish and simplistic view of politics and the world, is irritating to say the least.

That's nice. Why don't you send Pennis a valentine? He needs one, and it might blunt the pain of the latest in a long string of failures for this "broken toilet of a man" (reference: Alex's description of Louie on the TV series "Taxi").

He's still on TV? Dennis Miller SUCKS! even if he was funny - and he's NOT.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:11 PM on 02/14/2008

How many freaking chances does this guy get to have a show? He has never made it more than a year and he has had like 20 different formats. Hell, I think I'm funny too - I'd like just one shot at a show.

Miller's transformation is due to one thing and one thing only: being on the wrong side of 9/11. His schoolyard smack talk was very funny until he started using it to back up the dumbest, most incompetent president in American history. It went straight from there to: "can't give it up, can't admit I was wrong, I'm gonna ride this thing out and hope it'll start to lean back my way-ville."
Problem is, never happened. Now he's just a joke. I see him on O'Reilly (O'Reilly!!) and I just want to be listening in on that phone call, when his agent tells him Fox is offering him a regular slot on fucking Bill O'Reilly's, the biggest asshole on the planet, tv show! Jesus Christ, talk about a complete, self-inflicted, career suicide, self-respect evaporating, meltdown. And of course, he knows it. He used to be such a hipster - now? He's a punchline. Don't think he's not aware of that. He's a pariah in the entertainment community. His gigs now consist of... O'Reilly... and...

And why? All because HE CAN'T ADMIT HE WAS DEAD WRONG. I'm telling you - this will be the social divide for the next generation: those who got hip to the total bullshit, and those who refused to admit they got duped. The capacity for denial is breathtaking - people would literally rather die than admit they were wrong.

You are so right about it all.

I always thought Miller was funny and pretty reasonable when he represented the moderate, Midwest, traditional American (almost libertarian, in the best sense) sensibilities.

After September 2001, you could see that his thorax had been sufficiently rattled like the Reptile House at the San Diego Zoo after a 5.0-magnitude tremlor, and he retreated from reason and became full of anger.

And scared, paranoid anger can never be funny.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

....to the exent that Pittsburgh is part of the Midwest, and now that I think about it, it probably is (at least with respect to antique glass). When Pittsburghers make a list of the celebrities who come from here, Miller is almost always forgotten.

I used to think he was funny (sort of) before he got so vicious. He was always kind of pretentious, though. It must be hard to maintain the pretense of being an intellectual when one continues to support the moron in the White House.

help me, here, mrs. wakely. i'm not familiar with dennis miller's stance on 9/11. how is he on the wrong side? does he support the terrorists who did it? or does he not believe what the tinfoil hat crowd on this board thinks, that it was an inside job?

you gotta help me here because i want to hate denis miller and hate him as much as everyone else on this board but i need to know why i should hate him.

and don't tell me it's because you don't think he is funny. comedy is subjective and one man's jack benny is another man's george carlin is another man's chris rock is another man's ralphie maye

He's on the wrong side of 9/11 because, unlike all sentient human beings, he never said "oh, fuck, way off, this Bush is a fucking moron, and he's pulling some of the most audacious, outrageous, bullshit in the history of the American presidency, and he's getting tens of thousands of people killed, many of them complete innocents, and he's fucking our reputation around the world as, generally speaking (with a few massively glaring exceptions), being on the side of the angels."

That's why he's on the wrong side of 9/11.

And his complete inability - he's literally UNABLE - to say "you know what? I was DEAD WRONG. We were lied into Iraq, and we should get the fuck out YESTERDAY," is the DEFINITION of cowardly.

And he made me laugh, and STILL makes me laugh, except when he says ANYTHING about national security. Then he makes me cry, because that divide is the new problem we face: "ARE YOU GOING TO ADMIT YOU WERE WRONG?"

I was wrong! I said, reluctantly, "I NEED to believe Colin Powell. He just WOULDN'T go to the U.N. and spew a bunch of horseshit." But, he did. And within 6 months, maybe less, I said to my family, "damn, we got hosed. This is looking increasingly like the UNIMAGINABLE - we just got LIED into a fucking WAR!

This country won't recover until that is shouted from the fucking rooftops and all the apologists and enablers and cowardly fools looking out for number 1 (Dennis?) have NO CHOICE but to TELL THE TRUTH. Otherwise? We're fucked. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon enough.

1000% true. capacity for denial IS breathtaking. Macho and testosterone attitudes do not work, except in individual terms. You cannot be Macho for your country, or argue like a drunk on behalf of the country. You have to do what is smart, what is longterm. Kneejerk hating on muslims or 911 wasn't ever going to go anywhere for poor, poor miller. I used to really root for him, post SNL. I thought he was funny and goodhearted underneath. Now he sickens me, and it's not my fault.

Yes, we were all a little more "for" the war (esp. afghanistan) back in the months right after 911. Most of us came down from our fear/paranoia/strike back frenzy and started to make sense. Many did not.

I used to really like Dennis Miller back in his SNL days. Not any more. It's always hard for me to believe that anyone who APPEARS as smart as Dennis once did could really be a right wing nut case. I used to think he turned to the dark side to improve his ratings and career. Now, I just think he's an asshole.

It's funny to read so many people calling him "right wing", when actually, he never has been. He's a true Libertarian and the only issue where he skews off the charts with the proto-fascists is the war issue. He continues to make fun of both sides of the aisle roughly equally, and has been brutally funny regarding telebangelical nut-jobs and hypocritical closeted queers like Larry Craig and Mark Foley.

He's just so personally terrified of radical Ay-rabs that he can't help but come down on the side of Bush/Cheney's foreign policy, despite the fact that he criticizes everything else about them.

He's a frightened little rabbit who wants the US military to make things safe for him in the world, and every terrorist bombing anywhere in the world increases his paranoia.

Being a "libertarian" is just Republican For Dummies.

Dennis Miller makes fun of Larry Craig and Mark Foley AFTER the fact. To put it in football terms that Miller might understand, it's just a "late hit". It's just so he can appear to be "even handed" when in fact, it is just as disingenuous as referring to football players by their nicknames (as if this smarmy douche bag had personal relationships with the guys in the games he covered).

Since Dennis likes movie references: He's the Arab terrified scarecrow who tripped over a thesaurus on his yellow brick road search for a brain.

Good riddance. Hope his lame radio show is next.

Wrong. If you listen to his show, you'll hear him tie himself up like a pretzel trying to explain why he really enjoys his personal appearances at pro-life rallies and racist bar-b-ques.

Remember, he's carried by the same network that pushes Michael Savage and Radio Roy (look him up, he's a hoot and a half who believes soy products cause homosexuality).

No, Dennis Miller is all the way, WorldNet Daily, balls-on-chin wingnut. He might have tried to stay above the fray when he first started, but his bosses at RightWing Radio Central must have sat him down and told him what's what, because he buys it all, hook, line and stinker.

Miller's as right wing as they come and appears on Fox regularly, badmouthing anything left of center.

I can't stand people who laugh the loudest at their own jokes. He was such a self-loving schmuck. He's a coward and a fool. He has no place. He's the prodigal son with no family to go back to because he knifed them and buried them in his Ronald Reagan Memorial Has-Been Garden out back. I once saw him live in Vegas at the Sands. I think he's brilliant and I've enjoyed him for many years ... but ...

... Dennis Miller suffers from a textbook case of paranoia. It has probably been clinically diagnosed for him already. It is not dissimilar from the kind that I recognize heavy cocaine users get. While enjoying the euphoric, narcotic and stimulating effects of the drug, the more insidious psychoactive properties slowly produce a clinical paranoia in the user over time.

Consequently, he's become afraid, and that rising fear can be charted over the course of his life just by watching a chronology of his stand-up routines. He not only alludes to it, there are times when he outright declares it.

As his star was rising, he was "victimized" by some stalker incidents that made him fear for his life and the welfare of his wife and two sons, so the comfort of living in a gated community, something he made fun of when he was younger, suddenly became a viable lifestyle choice. He was socially unable to deal with recognition and stardom, so he lives a life of relative seclusion. a self-made exile that keeps him from having to interact with the public, lest he expose himself to the star-struck nut-jobs that our culture seems to cultivate.

He was heavily, deeply affected by the events of 9/11 which amplified and accelerated his already growing suspicious little voice in his head that repeats the mantra, "They really are out to get us."

His increasing mistrustful personality feeds the now self-reinforcing engine of paranoia, not only on a personal level, but on a global one. So the bogeyman Islamo-fascists will be knocking on his door if we don't invade the ME - and the criticism he gets from "left" for adopting that position just bolsters his burgeoning insecurity and buttresses his world view that "there's one around every corner".

He's becoming the Howard Hughes he once enjoyed joking about.

You nailed it 100% -- not just for Dennis, but initially, for about 85% of the country. It's amazing how much that dialogue has changed, despite all the supression of facts, and bait and switch routines of the media. Imagine if we had a real press.

I hadn't realized that Miller was unspooling to that extent. Thanks for your thoughtful analysis...I am sure that there are many others, celebrities, and non-celebrities alike, who fit the same psychopathological pattern.

It has been a VERY long time since I saw a comedy act. Not since I was heavily pregnant and singled out by Professor Irwin Corey for him to heckle as the promiscuous girl with the big stomach.
