UPDATE III:The New York Times discusses the contentious relationship between McCain and Obama that began two years ago during discussions of ethics reform in the U.S. Senate:

In a debate in 2006 on ethics in the Senate, which Mr. McCain regarded as a signature issue, he dressed down Mr. Obama and accused the freshman senator of disingenuousness. Mr. Obama called Mr. McCain cranky.

In public, that dispute melted away when the two cocked their fists at each other and hugged for a mutually beneficial photo opportunity. Their rapport has not advanced, and the two have a distant relationship. The two men are very different. Mr. McCain, 71, is a veteran of political and military battles. Mr. Obama, 46, is community organizer turned Ivy League graduate. Mr. McCain has told friends and associates that he views Mr. Obama as something of an upstart whose charmed political life delivered him to the same place Mr. McCain's decades of public and military service did.

And, associates said, Mr. McCain had always hoped to take on Mrs. Clinton.

UPDATE II: Politico's Jonathan Martin reports: McCain campaign manager Rick Davis "today sent an unmistakable message to Barack Obama over the Illinois Democrat's effort to stoke the obvious age contrast between himself and the 71-year-old McCain: Bring it on.:

"It's nice of him to constantly point out how nice he thinks of John McCain and his half-century of service to our country," Davis said sardonically. "I don't think he can get that ["half-century" line] out enough."

"I actually think half a century of service to our country is a good thing. If you would like to talk about the day John McCain went into the Naval Academy and pledged his loyalty to our country and everything that's happened since then, let's prosecute that. We love those kinds of discussions."

Davis, speaking at a Washington luncheon with reporters, also extended the criticism leveled by his candidate last night, suggesting that the 46-year-old Obama was offering vague rhetoric to mask liberal views.

"I think it's easy to say, 'let's have hope,'" Davis said. "But hope has to come into some form.

And Obama responded to to McCain, telling a crowd in Wisconsin that the GOP senator had "traded principles for his party's nomination."

Obama argued McCain has acted like President George W. Bush on the economy and on the Iraq war.

"George Bush may not be on the ballot this fall, but his tax cut and his economic policies are... that is a debate that I'm happy to have, because the American people know that Bush's policies have not worked for ordinary Americans," Obama said.

Obama said he was surprised by McCain's recent criticism of his economic policy - direct criticisms McCain started in the last few days.

"Economics is not his strong suit," Obama said with a smile, "he said 'I don't understand economics very well', and after he said that, it shows."

Obama told the audience that he believes McCain's economic policies would be "more of the same" of Bush tax policies - and argued McCain's position has undergone a transformation since running for president.

+++

UPDATE: John McCain again attacked Obama on Wednesday.

As he did Tuesday night, McCain focused much of his criticism on Obama, Tuesday's winner on the Democratic side.

"I respect him and the campaign that he has run, but there's going to come a time when we have to get into specifics," McCain told reporters Wednesday on Capitol Hill. "I've not observed every speech he's given, obviously, but they are singularly lacking in specifics."

+++

In his victory speech after the Potomac primaries, John McCain took several thinly veiled shots at Barack Obama, claiming that offering "only rhetoric" to advance the country "is not the promise of hope. It is a platitute."

Hope, my friends, is a powerful thing. I can attest to that better than many, for I have seen men's hopes tested in hard and cruel ways that few will ever experience. And I stood astonished at the resilience of their hope in the darkest of hours because it did not reside in an exaggerated belief in their individual strength, but in the support of their comrades, and their faith in their country. My hope for our country resides in my faith in the American character, the character which proudly defends the right to think and do for ourselves, but perceives self-interest in accord with a kinship of ideals, which, when called upon, Americans will defend with their very lives.

To encourage a country with only rhetoric rather than sound and proven ideas that trust in the strength and courage of free people is not a promise of hope. It is a platitude.

When I was a young man, I thought glory was the highest ambition, and that all glory was self-glory. My parents tried to teach me otherwise, as did the Naval Academy. But I didn't understand the lesson until later in life, when I confronted challenges I never expected to face.

McCain ended the salvo by ripping off one of Obama's signature lines:

As I have done my entire career, I will make my case to every American who will listen. I will not confine myself to the comfort of speaking only to those who agree with me. I will make my case to all the people. I will listen to those who disagree. I will attempt to persuade them. I will debate. And I will learn from them. But I will fight every moment of every day for what I believe is right for t his country, and I will not yield.

And, my friends, I promise you, I am fired up and ready to go.

Meanwhile, TPM's Greg Sargent highlights Obama's speech tonight drawing increasingly clear contrasts with McCain:

When I am the nominee, I will offer a clear choice. John McCain won't be able to say that I ever supported this war in Iraq, because I opposed it from the beginning. Senator McCain said the other day that we might be mired for a hundred years in Iraq, which is reason enough to not give him four years in the White House.

If we had chosen a different path, the right path, we could have finished the job in Afghanistan, and put more resources into the fight against bin Laden; and instead of spending hundreds of billions of dollars in Baghdad, we could have put that money into our schools and hospitals, our road and bridges - and that's what the American people need us to do right now.

And I admired Senator McCain when he stood up and said that it offended his "conscience" to support the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy in a time of war; that he couldn't support a tax cut where "so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate." But somewhere along the road to the Republican nomination, the Straight Talk Express lost its wheels, because now he's all for them.

Well I'm not. We can't keep spending money that we don't have in a war that we shouldn't have fought. We can't keep mortgaging our children's future on a mountain of debt. We can't keep driving a wider and wider gap between the few who are rich and the rest who struggle to keep pace. It's time to turn the page.

No, this small challenge to Obama, which Obama failed to meet, by the way, is nothing. McCain and the Repubs are keeping their power dry.

Wow, loved this!!!!
This Obamamania leaves me incredulous!
To me it's nothing more than an insane example of "The Emperor's New Clothes"....yes, the Emperor is NAKED!!!!
Change & Hope are pretty words but insufficient to be POTUS...I think white America is so afraid of being branded with the Scarlet R that Obama is has all but been annointed....with zero substance and some pretty dubious associates like Sharpton, Wright, Rezko, Ayers etc.
A, dyed in the wool Dem, my support has gone to HRC but if this empty suit gets the nod, I will hold my nose and vote for McCain.
Obama scares the bejeezus outta me.

If Obama gets the nomination, I'm voting for McCain. Obama doesn't have the experience and I wouldn't feel comfortable at this point in time with all our problems around the world. I consider myself a Democrat, but Obama's too liberal.

TO: Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama February 15, 2008

WHO WILL ELECT THE ELECTION THAT IS THE QUESTION:

PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON WINS WAR IN BOSNIA AND MOSLEMS: We need to select someone who can help un Win a War.

CAN EDUCATED SUPERDELEGATES SAVE AMERICAN LIVES? SHOULD WE FOLLOW THE MAJORITY VOTE TO SAVE AMERICA LIVES? Educated Superdelegates if select a smart President can Save American lives.

We need to select a President who can win the War against terrorism. The unbeatable tactic of our enemies of the Pop Shot meaning "We do not know where or when they will strike" has to be solved before I will believe the Surge over in Iraq is working.

Too many people have been killed by false hopes. We still need to select a leader who will help us win the War against the terrible terrorists who are not confined to Iraq only, but globally. We still may be next.

In ancient Greece the people had to choose between a Statesman and another man. They smartly chose the clever Statesman who deceived the enemy and saved Greece. We have this choice today. A Choice we are making.

President Thomas Jefferson states,"He believed Majority Vote should prevail to make "Just" decisions for what else have we. President Thomas Jefferson was equally insistent that Minority Rights be protected.

Actuarial tables tell us that a 72-year-old President McCain has about a 1 in 30 chance of a natural death in office the first year, a growing chance of that in office each successive year and a nearly 1 in 22 chance of dying a natural death during his final year in office, if he survives the first 3 years.

It will therefore matter a great deal who the Vice President is if McCain becomes President. The chances that McCain will naturally live out his term are not high enough so that one could describe his chances as 'very likely'.

McCain is three years older than Ronald Reagan was when Reagan was running for the office.

John S. McCain, Sr., his grandfather, died at age 61 and John S. McCain, Jr., his father, died at age 70.

Someone has to say it: McCain is not Nixon; Obama is not JFK. The US isn't the same country; the world is not the same place. McCain will not be flustered by youth; youth will not hesitate to insult age. This is political DRAMA, which is cultural DRAMA, which is the ongoing DRAMA of old warrior male versus new young interloper who is trying to take over the pride or the pack, not for breeding rights, but over WHO GETS TO SPEND OUR MONEY. And don't forget, unlike animals in the wild, today's OLD CRANKY FOLKS aren't push overs.

McCain accused Obama of lying, and Obama did not assert himself, nor did he defend himself. He just said he respected McCain, and was sorry McCain thought he was a liar, and then Obama changed the subject.

I think that's not 'real grace' that's mealy-mouthed wimping out.

And speaking of mealy-mouthed, have you noticed Obama's twitchy nibbly pursed lip movements betwen utterances in his speeches? I've decided he's wearing an earbud, and his lips move while his prompter is giving him his next line. Got any better theory?

Just remember -- whatever else about Senator McCain -- he is an elderly person. Yes Yes - respect him for his past performance. But as someone the same age -- and I keep myself in the best condition I can at this 70 plus years of age -- I say he cannot be on the cutting edge needed to do anything let alone be the president of the most important country in the world. Particularly at this time. Any candidate over the age of 65 should be made to say whom they wish to have as running mate because there is forty per cent chance this vice-president will be your next president.

I will respect him as long as he doesn't lie, cheat, steal or try to be other than who he is.

However, just yesterday, he switched his vote against torture to pro torture. Now, you would have thought that having gone through what he's gone through, that the man would have the wisdom of say someone like, erm, ....Obama!, but guess not.

Does he really believe that torturing someone is what we're about or that it won't bring more harm on our troops should they be captured, or that torturing someone gets the truth out of them? I wonder what he told the Viet Cong? Such an awful, awful scenario.

We've gotta get to Denver first, but it's always good to trade a few punches as a tune-up.

Meanwhile, please go to:

http://pol.moveon.org/superdelegates/?rc=homepage

AND SIGN the petition to the superdelegates to STOP HILLARY FROM OVERRIDING OUR VOTES.

In case you didn't read the story, Hillary announced yesterday, via Howard Wolfson, that she is going to seek to nullify the popular vote and pledged delegates with the help of the superdelegates.

THIS, AS YOU KNOW, WILL TEAR APART OUR PARTY - MOST BELIEVE, BEYOND REPAIR.

I am also emailing ALL my local papers, national papers, television networks, and pertinent bloggers.

This latter piece is VERY important, as editors are deciding right now how much they will headline this story.

If they banner it for several news cycles, it will highlight the fact that the Clinton's are seeking to undermine democratic principles, and her numbers will suffer.

In fact, I've spoken to more than one person that says THIS COULD BE OUR ISSUE, the knock-out punch for us.

This is where "Fired up! Ready to go!" becomes a call to action.

ALSO, I am emailing all my friends, and focusing particularly on my Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania pals.

I'm not assuming that everyone knows. I'm shouting it to the rooftops, saying, "Not this time! This year, WE THE PEOPLE WILL DECIDE!"

Actually for years I thought McCain would make a great president. In fact, I wrote his name in in 2000 and 2004. But alas, anyone thinking a black person has a pass on suffering in this racist country has no insight at all. McCain surely was a hero and endured unspeakable things during the Vietnam war. But he is in error if he thinks that only service people endure hell. He has never walked in the shoes of a black person in our racist society. But although I am white, when I was in Texas, I was introduced to the most insidious racism that I ever confronted. In the work place, where all blacks got placed on the the lowest rung in a group and all whites automatically got the upper level jobs. It eventually had to be sorted out by a court and those who were racially assigned got paid huge bucks because some great worker like Obama stirred up trouble till the system was broken. And besides, even Mr. McCain was treated to that same sort of thing by the Bushies when they made a lie out of his own daughter's adoption. Surely he remembers that. Yes, definitely more than one sort of suffering. So I say, "You go Mr. Obama, and show these racists up.

Troubledgoodangel needs to recognize his bigotry and understand his own spiritual degeneracy that is obvious in post.

Who's more dangerous? Fundamentalist Christians--or fundamentalist Muslims?

The former group runs this nation. And with 1 million dead Iraqis and over 30,000 American casualties, the comparison is clear. Muslims have nothing to compare with those numbers.

Sorry, bigot. Seems you're a hypocrite as well.

I beg to differ with those equating Youth with Inexperience. (1) The young are usually more curious, pay more attention to what is happening currently. Many know more about today's world than us oldsters.
(2) Outdated experience is sometimes worse than none. And some of us have less experience than years. There is a big difference between 20 years of experience and one year of experience repeated 20 times. (Or 40 or 60.)

The "youth" usually are ill informed, not having history and experiences to make truly tough decisions. Those that have the maturity are rare. And for all the hype about the "youth" vote....history shows us that they just don't go to the polls and vote.

I have nothing against Sen. Obama. He seems very articulate and energetic. But I have some misgivings about Sen. Obama's relatives, many of whom are Moslems. Will they move into the White House? Will Mr. Obama disclose how many of his relatives are Moslems and to which organizations they belong? Will he monitor their activities? After November 11, I think, the American people must take all possible precautions, for in these fast-pace, crazy times, with disabled Moslem women blowing themselves up and killing dozens of innocents, we need to be sure which Moslems are "safe" Moslems!
