UPDATE III:The New York Times discusses the contentious relationship between McCain and Obama that began two years ago during discussions of ethics reform in the U.S. Senate:

In a debate in 2006 on ethics in the Senate, which Mr. McCain regarded as a signature issue, he dressed down Mr. Obama and accused the freshman senator of disingenuousness. Mr. Obama called Mr. McCain cranky.

In public, that dispute melted away when the two cocked their fists at each other and hugged for a mutually beneficial photo opportunity. Their rapport has not advanced, and the two have a distant relationship. The two men are very different. Mr. McCain, 71, is a veteran of political and military battles. Mr. Obama, 46, is community organizer turned Ivy League graduate. Mr. McCain has told friends and associates that he views Mr. Obama as something of an upstart whose charmed political life delivered him to the same place Mr. McCain's decades of public and military service did.

And, associates said, Mr. McCain had always hoped to take on Mrs. Clinton.

UPDATE II: Politico's Jonathan Martin reports: McCain campaign manager Rick Davis "today sent an unmistakable message to Barack Obama over the Illinois Democrat's effort to stoke the obvious age contrast between himself and the 71-year-old McCain: Bring it on.:

"It's nice of him to constantly point out how nice he thinks of John McCain and his half-century of service to our country," Davis said sardonically. "I don't think he can get that ["half-century" line] out enough."

"I actually think half a century of service to our country is a good thing. If you would like to talk about the day John McCain went into the Naval Academy and pledged his loyalty to our country and everything that's happened since then, let's prosecute that. We love those kinds of discussions."

Davis, speaking at a Washington luncheon with reporters, also extended the criticism leveled by his candidate last night, suggesting that the 46-year-old Obama was offering vague rhetoric to mask liberal views.

"I think it's easy to say, 'let's have hope,'" Davis said. "But hope has to come into some form.

And Obama responded to to McCain, telling a crowd in Wisconsin that the GOP senator had "traded principles for his party's nomination."

Obama argued McCain has acted like President George W. Bush on the economy and on the Iraq war.
Story continues below

"George Bush may not be on the ballot this fall, but his tax cut and his economic policies are... that is a debate that I'm happy to have, because the American people know that Bush's policies have not worked for ordinary Americans," Obama said.

Obama said he was surprised by McCain's recent criticism of his economic policy - direct criticisms McCain started in the last few days.

"Economics is not his strong suit," Obama said with a smile, "he said 'I don't understand economics very well', and after he said that, it shows."

Obama told the audience that he believes McCain's economic policies would be "more of the same" of Bush tax policies - and argued McCain's position has undergone a transformation since running for president.

+++

UPDATE: John McCain again attacked Obama on Wednesday.

As he did Tuesday night, McCain focused much of his criticism on Obama, Tuesday's winner on the Democratic side.

"I respect him and the campaign that he has run, but there's going to come a time when we have to get into specifics," McCain told reporters Wednesday on Capitol Hill. "I've not observed every speech he's given, obviously, but they are singularly lacking in specifics."

+++

In his victory speech after the Potomac primaries, John McCain took several thinly veiled shots at Barack Obama, claiming that offering "only rhetoric" to advance the country "is not the promise of hope. It is a platitute."

Hope, my friends, is a powerful thing. I can attest to that better than many, for I have seen men's hopes tested in hard and cruel ways that few will ever experience. And I stood astonished at the resilience of their hope in the darkest of hours because it did not reside in an exaggerated belief in their individual strength, but in the support of their comrades, and their faith in their country. My hope for our country resides in my faith in the American character, the character which proudly defends the right to think and do for ourselves, but perceives self-interest in accord with a kinship of ideals, which, when called upon, Americans will defend with their very lives.

To encourage a country with only rhetoric rather than sound and proven ideas that trust in the strength and courage of free people is not a promise of hope. It is a platitude.

When I was a young man, I thought glory was the highest ambition, and that all glory was self-glory. My parents tried to teach me otherwise, as did the Naval Academy. But I didn't understand the lesson until later in life, when I confronted challenges I never expected to face.

McCain ended the salvo by ripping off one of Obama's signature lines:

As I have done my entire career, I will make my case to every American who will listen. I will not confine myself to the comfort of speaking only to those who agree with me. I will make my case to all the people. I will listen to those who disagree. I will attempt to persuade them. I will debate. And I will learn from them. But I will fight every moment of every day for what I believe is right for t his country, and I will not yield.

And, my friends, I promise you, I am fired up and ready to go.

Meanwhile, TPM's Greg Sargent highlights Obama's speech tonight drawing increasingly clear contrasts with McCain:

When I am the nominee, I will offer a clear choice. John McCain won't be able to say that I ever supported this war in Iraq, because I opposed it from the beginning. Senator McCain said the other day that we might be mired for a hundred years in Iraq, which is reason enough to not give him four years in the White House.

If we had chosen a different path, the right path, we could have finished the job in Afghanistan, and put more resources into the fight against bin Laden; and instead of spending hundreds of billions of dollars in Baghdad, we could have put that money into our schools and hospitals, our road and bridges - and that's what the American people need us to do right now.

And I admired Senator McCain when he stood up and said that it offended his "conscience" to support the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy in a time of war; that he couldn't support a tax cut where "so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate." But somewhere along the road to the Republican nomination, the Straight Talk Express lost its wheels, because now he's all for them.

Well I'm not. We can't keep spending money that we don't have in a war that we shouldn't have fought. We can't keep mortgaging our children's future on a mountain of debt. We can't keep driving a wider and wider gap between the few who are rich and the rest who struggle to keep pace. It's time to turn the page.

So, a so-called Democrat is starting to take out her resentment on a fellow Democrat. I will never vote for another Clinton, but I'm not about to sing McCain's praises. McCain is dangerous, and Obama is right--this is not the Maverick, but someone who had embraced every one of Bush's policies.

I guess voting against waterboarding after saying you were opposed to it (McCain) and voting against a ban on cluster bombs (Clinton) is laudable.

Yes, it is , though McCain straddled the fence as far as "enhanced" techniques. Calling it "illegal", yet voting against a bill that calls it so is tantamount to condoning it.

from TPM/NYT:

The leading Republican presidential candidate, Senator John McCain of Arizona, a former prisoner of war who steadfastly opposes the use of torture, voted against the bill. Mr. McCain said the ban would limit the C.I.A.’s ability to gather intelligence. “We always supported allowing the C.I.A. to use extra measures,” he said.
At the same time, he said that he believed “waterboarding is illegal and should be banned” and that the agency must adhere to existing federal law and international treaties.

“Hope, my friends, is a powerful thing. .....

And, my friends, I promise you, I am fired up and ready to go.”

It seems, my friends, that McCain has spooned out this paean to “hope” as a pretty thin soup of platitudes and pomposities. He seems to be, as the chosen Republican Party contender (unless the Huckleberry pulls off a miracle), now taking upon himself the post of a future helmsman of the Republican Party ship of faithful members, a ship that one can argue is quickly sinking. Rather than steer it, he will in fact have to desperately cling to the only few planks of that ship, the same old rotting planks that have kept the Party floating so long: the never ending war against some enemy (not to long ago the Marxist menace of the Soviet Union and China and more recently terrorism and islamo-fascism), the voracious industrial complex that feeds the war, the same tired old call for less government and lower taxes, the holding of every sperm sacred and sharable only between heterosexually paired humans, and the ascent of the US population into a Pollyanna world of positively valued families and righteous religiosity and the “hope” that such a world will hold out.

A victorious conclusion to McCain’s run for the presidency of the US, I think, might well presage the catastrophe of the Hindenburg, that is, not the demise of the airship but the election of the old warhorse general to guide the Reichstag.

You have to feel just a little bit sorry for all Republicans.

It must be rough trying to adapt the 19th century "robber baron" mentality of a 20th century Republican to the 21st century.

Every time I start to feel a stir of pity for the Republicans, I think of Tom DeLay and all those who would stop at nothing for a "permanent majority." If there had been just a little less of that over the last decade, I could muster some pity.

Now, not so much.

If you're for Obama, NEVER make fun of McCain. You can criticize his views and his abandonment of principles that made him so respected, but no sarcasm or name-calling, please. Hillary is getting so many votes from sympathy rather than because people think she is the best candidate. She is encouraging those votes. Obama supporters have to be better than that.

I agree that the biggest liability of Obama's campaign are the smug voices of supporters. All of the moderates and people who have never participated in the political process that are drawn to Obama will be repelled by the tone of the dialogue. Did you see where Maureen Dowd quoted the Obama supporter making fun of Hillary commenting on Black History month, saying he was sorry there wasn't a White B**** month? Obama aims to be repectful in his campaign--a selling point. If we don't follow suit, we are giving ammunition to McCain for hypocrisy. If it's going to get ugly, why not go for Hillary and Bill? Aren't they better at the ugly stuff?

I agree that we as Obama supporters have to watch the tone and take our cue from the candidate we support. However, the Maureen Dowd thing is inaccurate (surprise). The joke was told by Penn Jillette, a man (1) who is NOT an Obama supporter. In fact, he is holding out for a "hard-core athiest libertarian" candidate (but not Ron Paul because "50% of what he says is bat*** crazy" according to Penn). (2) He relays the joke only as a means of predicting (not hoping) that Obama will be president because when he told it to a sample of google-eyed tourists in Vegas, instead of the boos he thought he'd get, everyone went ape. (3) He actually addresses it in the latest dispatch (where he mentions the libertarian thing, but I know from his past items that he's libertarian and not an Obama person). (4) "I know it's offensive, that's why it's funny. Most funny jokes are offensive" is his stance. I agree in that if the HRC camp twists up over every joke a comedian tells, she needs to get a thicker skin, and if it is a 'backlash' against the perception that she's being 'picked-on' that gets her past the primaries, that is ridiculous.

The reason McCain and tghe republicans WANT Hillary is that McCain and the Clintons have a very similar difrty, littered past of crocked deals, corruption and political lying for political gain. The know that if he goes up against Clinton she will not and can not bring up McCain's dirt, slime and corruption. The have a declared truce on issues related to ethics, morality and political whoring.

If he is up against Obama-now that is a conversation that Obama can have with McCain. It is a conversation Obama will have with McCain. There will be no truce, there will be a battle though. Obama will win and the nation will be able to finally move on.

Since Hillary and McCain are attacking him now with almost identical (and nonsensical) spin, maybe he should publicly link the two opponents.

Ie. "McCain and Clinton say this... McCain and Clinton say that..." etc.

That way he can tie McCain to some of those huge Hillary negatives.

Barack should be ashamed of calling McCain what he is. Barack should make allowances. Everyone knows that we old fogeys are a bit grumpy (and in the movies that is charming!) and cranky (it's a comedy standard) and sometimes we get absent minded and forget things. But Barack shouldn't forget his manners. Smile at the bold gent and humor him. One day, son, you'll be creaking along in much the same way -- if you're lucky.

Besides, McCain has been that way for a long long time, even before he got to be almost as old as I am, long before.

If you read the article, you'll find McCain taking "thinly veiled shots" at Obama, not the reverse. Obama has been nothing but respectful to McCain and McCain has a well-known history of cheap shots aimed at Barack. Where in the article did Obama say anything that you could construe to be agism? Perhaps you should focus on what the candidates are saying and not what the trolls or keyboard extremists post here?

Your devotion to Ms. Clinton clouds your objectivity.

The age issue is the best one McCain has. What else can he run on? 100 years in Iraq? How safe it is in an Iraqi market with 100 US soldiers armed to the teeth and 4 Blackhawk helicopters overhead? Voting against ending torture as an instrument of US policy even though he was tortured? Borrowing trillions to fight in Iraq and destroy our economy in the process, and then denounce social spending? Kissing the butts of those who personally attacked him and his family?

At least on the age issue, he can argue that it's not fair to exclude someone just because of his or her age. Maybe he'll argue for affirmative action for seventy year old plus people running for President.

And he'll be in with many other aged world leaders -- Franco, Mao, Fidel, Stalin, Pinochet all come to mind.

Take him on John. You've forgotten more than he knows. Of course you've also forgotten more than you remember too.

John is clear -- he will not withdraw from Vietnam.

From non-partisan FACTCHECK.org "That of course is a serious distortion of what McCain actually said to a town-hall meeting in New Hampshire back on Jan. 3. His actual words are posted in a video on YouTube. Far from advocating "endless war," he said the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq would be "fine with me" provided that they're not being killed or wounded."

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:43 AM on 02/14/2008

You make my point. I didn't talk about "endless war". Do you really want US troops in Iraq for another 100 years, even if they're not in combat (if it's even possible they wouldn't be in combat if they're there)? I'd rather see whatever money it costs to keep US troops in Iraq going towards universal health care here and the troops home.
