BERLIN - Madonna recalled her struggle to break into show business on Wednesday as she presented her first effort as a movie director: "Filth and Wisdom," which made its debut at the Berlin film festival.

The singer-actress, who turns 50 this year, follows three young housemates in London who try to finance their dreams while working in unfulfilling jobs.

"One of the themes that I explore in the film is struggle, and if I look back to the beginning of my career I can recall those moments of struggle like it was yesterday," Madonna said at a news conference alongside her cast. "There are aspects of Holly, Juliette and AK's struggle that I could relate to completely, and I could access that memory and put it into the story."

Ukrainian immigrant AK -- played by Gypsy-punk singer Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello -- is an aspiring musician, self-styled philosopher and sometime sadomasochistic actor. Juliette (Vicky McClure) works for a lecherous pharmacist while she dreams of going to Africa to help children. Holly (Holly Weston), is an unsuccessful ballerina who resorts to working as a pole-dancer -- and the character who appears to relate most closely to Madonna, who recalled that she grew up wanting to be a dancer.

Madonna remembered "the cold harsh reality when I arrived in New York only to find that there were thousands of girls that wanted to do the same thing, and I wasn't so special after all -- that I was never going to be able to pay the rent ... and that I was going to have to do other things to feed myself."

Madonna stayed off the screen in "Filth and Wisdom." She said directing gave her a chance to "execute my vision," but conceded there was one drawback.

She said there was "one little tiny thing that was missing, that visceral release that you don't have if you're not performing -- so it was an adjustment for me to work from my neck up."

Asked what the future holds, Madonna said: "I look forward to making more music and making more films -- I'm very excited about both."

"Filth and Wisdom" started out as a short movie but grew into an 81-minute feature.

Madonna said she added scenes and fleshed out the characters after she "fell in love" with them and "decided that I wanted the story to go on more than 20 minutes."

The film's soundtrack is strongly influenced by Hutz, whose own band appears and who, Madonna said, "kept turning me on to new music" -- but it also includes pop moments such as the singer's own "Erotica."

The modern music was "made by people that I know, who I knew would give me songs and not charge me lots of money, and Britney (Spears) was one of them," she said. "Of course, I used some of my songs because I'm not going to charge myself."

A London resident, Madonna said she chose the city as the movie's location in part because she did not want to be away from her children -- but also because "I like how cosmopolitan it is there, and I thought it was the perfect place to make the movie."

"Filth and Wisdom" is showing in the Berlin festival's Panorama section, outside the event's main competition.

This directorial debut is a real accomplishment for Madonna too, especially seeing that she was forced to add 2 dozen directorial assistants to her usual 2 dozen personal assistants - so just imagine how complicated it was for her to direct a movie through that whole mob - geez the storm of post it notes must have been coming fast and furious!

Gawd, Madge? Are you really that cheap?

Say it ain't so!

Madonna is awesome. She is very talented and can do anything. I miss the days I used to dance to her music, and I think I am the one getting old, and not her, Ha ha. I miss the days of her fun and harmless, crazy antics. At least she didn't do drugs and ruin her life, like a lot of the "stars" today. She is a good singer, dancer, author, mother, video creator... artist, WOW the list goes on. But her # 1 best thing is her self-marketing, on that, no one is better.

My 6 year old niece just asked me "what's wrong with that lady's face". Why, why, why do famous women think that tight frozen face look is attractive.

Well, it couldn't possibly be worse than one of her husband's idiotic, yet "stylish" movies where a bunch of dudes kill each other for no good reason.

(It's rare to even see a female character in a Guy Ritchie movie, even rarer for one to speak.)

Maybe the Hillary campaign should hire her to do their ads.

I guess the over 8 million who bought her 2005 CD think she is( it was in the top 5 best sellers IN THE WORLD for 2005 AND 2006) not too mention her 2006 tour, sold out around the world and becoming the Most Successful Female Tour ever, or the fact she enters the Rock Hall of Fame on the FIRST VOTE, or the fact she is the highest paid and most successful female singer of all time. That's just for starters..........

Cowgirl - sounds like you better tell The Guardian how talented Madge is. Here's what they said about her latest cinematic triumph:

"Well, it had to happen. Madonna has been a terrible actor in many, many films and now she has graduated to being a terrible director. She has made a movie so incredibly bad that Berlin festival goers were staggering around yesterday in a state of clinical shock, deathly pale and mewing like maltreated kittens.

Maybe they just don't like her accent.

And? Most reviews have been positive. The Guardian is a tabloid rag. None of the reviews have said the movie is wonderful. But most have said her directoral skills show real potential, that she has a real grasp of certain elements that are essential to being a good director. What the Guardian said is so utterly wrong from all other "credible" sources.

There are more than critics from the Guardian.

And?

"Madonna has made a movie and it is utter trash -- pseudo psychology, cheap make-up, bad lighting and a hell of a lot of scenes shot without rehearsal," said the daily Der Tagesspiegel.

But, hey, love the accent.

What a load of crap. A little botox does not amount to the famous "Cat lady". Some of you haters really stretch things to the limit.

Hey - good idea - we have been looking for a director for a movie idea and Madonna would fit the Bill Clinton.... Or perhaps she might have a starring role.....

That doesn't surprise me. Madonna has displayed real talent in the management of her career, as well as in her art. She has always reinvented herself just ahead of the curve. She hasn't been dominated or exploited by anyone, unlike so many women in the history of the entertainment business. My hat's off to her.

GMAFB. Jealous much? She probably achieves more in 5 minutes than you do in 10 years.

I am not surprised at all. Madonna is very talented and directing seems a natural fit for her.
