The lives of 22,000 patients could have been saved if U.S. regulators had been quicker to remove a Bayer AG drug used to stem bleeding during open heart surgery, according to a medical researcher interviewed by CBS Television's 60 Minutes program.

The drug Trasylol was withdrawn in November at the request of the FDA after an observational study linked the medicine to kidney failure requiring dialysis and increased death of those patients.

From the way it sounds there's a chance my father's kidney failure and death my have been a result of this drug. But There's no way in hell to find out.

Ah, yes!

Brought to you by Bayer, the same fine folks who developed Zyklon B, a gas used by the Nazis to exterminate Jews during WWII.

Which we also turned a blind eye to until it was too late...

Dr Mangano states that if the drug had been removed after the study was published in Jan 2006 , 22,000 lives could have been saved. This drug was used to stem bleeding during open heart surgery... How many total open heart surgeries were performed in that time period... Until the facts come out , seems like this could be another CBS/DanRather bias ratings attraction based on falsehoods

I personally know four people who had open heart surgery during that time frame, rwe.

Heck of a Job, FDA.

How many times have I told you people to take new drugs at your own risk! Everytime a new drug comes out, the phone would ring with patients saying they just read on the internet about this new drug for some problem and they want a prescription. Well, there ya go.
As for me (RN for more years than I'll admit to), I'll stick with the oldies but goodies. Which ones?

Welcome to health care in America.
1 out of 5 deaths in hospitals is due to wrongful or over medication. Thanks Doc

22,000 dead? Sounds like murder to me. The CEO of Bayer should be brought up on homicide charges, tried, and if convicted, executed. We don't need subhuman scum like this walking around free.

I just read an article last week about how presription drugs kill at least 50 times more than illegal street drugs. WTF? Why are we spending billions a year to stop 10,000 people a year from dying on street drugs and then legally spending tens of billions on killing 100,000 or more a year on legal prescription drugs? Oh yeah, big pharma & politicians go hand in wallet. silly me. Grrrrrrrrr

What do you expect from a company that was part of the IG Farben conglomerate during Nazi Germany, and who elected a Nazi War criminal to head their board of directors in 1956? Look it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayer

This is funny -- but not funny -- you know what i mean?
Last week I sent an email to Bayer asking a very simple question. Would their "oneaday" brand of vitamin pills have any thing in them that someone (me) on synthroid pills should be aware of. They came back with -- "ask your doctor". Really I do not think they give a diddly damn about any body but their bottom line.

"Researcher: 22,000 Died Amid Delayed Bayer Drug Recall"

No surprise here. This is a very common (tragic) story. Time to wake up? Maybe? Ever?

So this drug has lethal side effects and they pull it to save lives, and get sued by people who could have used it. Hmmm..... Aren't there any other drugs that slow bleeding? Was this the only choice between life and death for these 22K?

There should be 22,000 lawsuits if that's how many died. AND Bayer executives who perpetrated this delay should be prosecuted to the limit of the law. These are crimes against humanity.

I know it is ancient history, but what was their WWII record? Didn't they use slave labor? Weren't they a part of Hitler's industrial complex?

Bayer, and the executives who withheld this information should be tried for criminally negligent homicide. IT WILL TAKE THAT, AND SENDING HUNDREDS OF THESE CORPORATE SADIST MURDERERS TO JAIL FOR A LONG TIME, in order for the public to once again be able to feel comfortable.

I was a medical professional for 26 years and have been ill for ten years. During that time, I have seen the medical system deteriorate in more ways than can be imagined, and care is simply deplorable. I refuse to take any medication new to the market for at least four years, so in hopes that all complications and deaths can begin to be revealed.

I can tell you with great certainly, that the FDA functioned much better under Clinton. It actually worked, and THEY LISTENED AND ACTED. We had begun to see problems within the FDA after the Gingrich revolution, when the Republican-controlled Congress began to meddle. Under Bush is has deteriorated into mayhem. The drug companies Republican Congress, and the Bush administration have interfered with and driven off most of the dedicated professionals, gutted the budget, and replaced professionals with hacks.
One of my doctors told me recently that he had stopped prescribing a after he had three patients have serious complications, not listed in the literature, and others within his own practice were seeing the same thing. When they made the reports to the FDA, the individuals with whom they spoke were clearly frightened and went to extraordinary lengths to try to attribute it to something other than the medication, frankly told them their supervisor is a political appointee and would do everything they could to stifle the reports.

This is calculated murder. Wouldn't we go to war, if someone killed 22,000 people in something like the towers? This happened all spread out neatly, in the operating room and hospital, so it wasn't in people's faces.

Convict, and send these murderers within the decision-making alliance in Bayer and the FDA to JAIL, IF NOT TO DEATH ROW. They willngly permitted most of these 22,000 people die FOR GREED.

America is in real trouble. It's not just medicine.

Greed, the pursuit of profit, over care for our fellow human beings is doing more to kill Americans than Al-Quaeda. That and putting them out of work.

I always thought capitalism was good, a free market, etc. I was wrong.

You are absolutely correct in saying it's not just medicine. Big business in this country is the reat terrorist.

why recall a rotten killer-drug when there's so much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to be made from it?

Hey, to hell with the victims. Why did they let those doctors give them the drug, anyway? Being UNCONSCIOUS on an operating table is NO EXCUSE!!

Dead people are a buncha wusses.

It's the bottom line, baby. The more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ the merrier. We don't want patients who want "entitlements" in the operating room to ruin our profits.
