WaPo: McCain Lying About Calling For Rumsfeld Resignation

As he gets closer to the Republican nomination, John McCain has been trying to balance his unqualified support for the Iraq war by reminding audiences that he was also a tough critic of the way it was managed until President Bush finally changed strategies a year ago. In recent weeks, McCain has gone so far as to tell audiences that he was "the only one" who called for then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's resignation.

The only trick is he never did, at least not publicly. The senator from Arizona was a tough critic of Rumsfeld and more than once declared that he had no confidence in the Pentagon chief in the two years before Bush finally dumped him in November 2006. But even as he was criticizing Rumsfeld, McCain typically stopped short of calling for the defense secretary to step down on the grounds that it was up to the president to decide who served in his cabinet.

There is no chance that I will vote for McCain, but we've got to be honest about who he is and what he did during the Bush war years. Yes, he's exaggerating when he claims to have called for Rummy's resignation, but it is absolutely true that McCain was also a withering critic of the defense secretary until the election of 2004. McCain's critique of the war and the way it was waged up until then is a major reason why the neanderthal voices of talk radio hate the man. He also was opposed to a tax cut in time of war -- another reason conservatives don't trust him. It is of course true that McCain has since sold out and jumped on the Bush/Iraq bandwagon in order to gain Bush's support for his own presidential aspirations, but people should remember what once earned McCain the "maverick" label.

Donald Rumsfeld didn't have any comments. He said he's happy since he's spending more time promoting unnecessary conflicts within his own family.

Lick Spittle McCain never opposed Rummy nor Bush.

But he is now willing to emulate his masters and ......

But I shouldn't call him a liar; there is another possibility: at his age, I think my memory started to slip a bit now and then. So I'll be generous and assume that he misremembers.

Has anyone ever investigated what John McCain's bombing targets were on the day he was shot down? Was he returning back to base when he was shot down, and if so, what targets did he actually strike. Pin-point bombing back then was even more ridiculous a concept than now, so did he, like many other American pilots, cause "collateral damage" to any hospitals, orphanages, or civilian housing? It does not strike me as very heroic to rain terror from up high, where you are not even confronted with what you have done. Much credit goes to how he conducted himself as a prisoner under torture, but lets look at the whole picture of what this man was doing when he was shot down.

One can see anger on the turtle-face. That stiff finger was meant for two-faced McCain, but instead, it goes straight into a flared nostril.

Lying is the one constant when it comes to this "war" and the political battles surrounding it. The truth is so lost that the best we can hope for is better lies.

The only reason John McCain disliked Mitt Romney is that Mitt seemed to get away with lying about his numerous flip-flops.

Now that Mitt's gone, it seems McCain has adopted his campaign strategy: Lie and Deny!

Bush/McCain policies dramatically reduced our security. They made us poorer and less safe. (naturally, in the name of making us reacher and safe).

For all his tired war hero stuff (yeah, it was awful, sure--but who, ultimately, was at fault for that? Ironically, it was the US government who, wrongly, put him there, and killed 55,000 Americans and over 1 million Vietnamese. No one EVER mentions that). Anyway, he has no integrity. After the K. Rove attack machine vanquished him in South Carolina for insinuating that he was the father of an illegitimate black child--cool!--he supported Georgie boy to the hilt. It was a disgusting display of sycophancy and toady-ism, as he "waited his turn" to run for the presidency again. After that, a LOT of the DC friends he made became "disillusioned" with the apparently moderate senator.

But really, he's just a slightly watered down version of Bush. Haven't we had enough bombast and tough-guy b.s. in this country? The only good news about this backward-looking guy is that a LOT of independents will vote for Barack rather than him...

John McCain is a train wreck for America. Sadly, millions of uninformed voters will never do any real thinking to realize this old dog, with his thin skin and hair trigger temper, is Ameica's worst nightmare! The hollywood spin guys that have been hired by the Republicans to confuse the feeble minded voters will have a field day makeing this old fart into a John Wayne hero for the 21st Century. Hopefully, enough voters will see through the sham and not let him get elected Commander In Chief! If he is elected Iran will be his next target, because he truly wants to be the REAL WAR PRESIDENT! Scarry stuff!

My question of McCain is he so locked in to perceiving himself as a "Hero," that he does NOT know when to cut our losses, from this G W Bush created mess... The idea that just because someone was in the Military, that gives them Military expertise is nonsense!
G W Bush has played right in to Osama's hands... Do you think Osama and Al Qaeda have spent $Billions and $Billions in fighting us? We have increased the number of Terrorists, and worn down and depleted our own Military and equipment...
On 9 11 Osama Bin Laden hit us financially... Yes, we have focused on 3,000 dead, but they were NOT the Target... A Financial Center was targeted... An expensive reaction by the USA was "targeted"... NOT a compliment, but Osama has masterfully outplayed the US Military and US Government...
Now, McCain's answer is we can win in Iraq??? Win what? Win how? At what continuing cost in Lives and Treasure... Al Qaeda is in Iraq is the equivalent to saying the US Military is Headquartered in Iraq, just because we have troops there... Al Qaeda is spread all over the World...
We already have a cocky, arrogant, President, who has never served his Country... I do NOT assume because McCain served his Country, he has the best ideas... Nor, that becoming President isn't about Ego gratification... McCain's last 7+ years in office has been about serving Bush and his Party, not about Country in my opinion...

Proof of senility.

McCain remembers from yesterday what he thinks will sound good today, and will deal with the "gotchas" tomorrow.

And that's not gonna get better FOUR YEARS FROM NOW, let alone eight.

John McCain is a sellout. He wants revenge against his "tormentors." The "pseudo-community" could include the entire Arab world or even "political dissidents" at home. His change of religion, the kissing of Jerry Falwell's ring, the abandonment of his position on torture, his PTSD are all reasons for his defeat. Everything the man stood for I disagreed with - his bombing of civilians in Vietnam, for example. Did he care that civilians died? Never! But even assuming that his actions in Vietnam could be construed as heroic or even patriotic, although it was an illegal and immoral exercise in imperialism and neo-colonialism, his recent actions condemn him for certain.
