Clinton, Obama Court Auto Industry In Nod To Michigan Delegates

You won't see either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in Michigan, but from all appearances they are now locked in a spirited battle for our delegates.

What? I thought the Michigan "primary" happened a month ago?

Well, consider this...

On Monday, Hillary stumped at a General Motors plant in White Marsh, Maryland. Flanked by Michigan DNC member, GM lobbyist (and Hillary donor) Debbie Dingell, Hillary declared that we're going to have the "strongest and best automotive sector in the world" - ripped the South Korea free trade deal and promised $22 billion in federal grants and bonds to help automakers retool to build "green" vehicles.

Yesterday, Barack stumped at a GM plant in Janesville, Wisconsin. In his speech he ripped NAFTA and touted his 10-year, $150 billion plan to promote "green" manufacturing.

AUTO WORKERS AUTO WORKERS AUTO WORKERS This country had the most prosporus years ever, during the "Clinton Administration". A lot of younger voters, today, were not around then. Ask your parents. Bill Clinton cleaned up a "BUSH" mess and turned the auto manufacturing business into a success story for a lot of UAW and other auto workers. People working for auto plant suppliers, doubled. I worked at Chrysler's in Michigan, FOR 39 YRS. and our plant was hiring people off the street. DON'T TELL ME ABOUT BILL CLINTON. At that time Hillary Clinton was working with under privlidged children. If there are any NASCAR fans out there, you know about the "VICTORY JUNCTION RANCH" that Richard and Kyle Petty maintain for under privlidge children throughout the country. Bill and Hillary Clinton, as a family, have done more for this country than any family in the political arena. What credentials do the other canditates bring. If elected they will be asking for the Clinton's and their advisors advise. Who else has the accomplishment such as theirs. I have no doubt of Hillary Clinton's qualifications and being ready to be President of the United Stated.

.....U A W........AUTO WORKERS......U A W .....
I AM RETIRED AFTER 39 YEARS AT CHRYSLER CORP. AUTO ASSY. PLANT. MY WIFE & I HAD OUR BEST YEARS DURING THE "CLINTON ADMINISTRATION". NO LAYOFFS, NO CUTBACKS, GOOD INSURANCE BENEFITS, 95% PAY WHEN OFF FOR CHANGEOVER, C.O.L.A.(cost of living. BILL CLINTON DID A LOT FOR THE AUTO INDUSTRY. F.M.L.A. (family leave of absence) was TAKING AN EXCUSED DAY OR DAYS OFF TO BE WITH YOUR FAMILIES IF NEEDED, LIKE PREGNANCY TO BE WITH WIFE OR ILL PARENTS. THIS WAS ALL BILL CLINTON. HE WORKED WITH BOTH STATE AND FEDERAL GVT. RE. UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS. HILLARY CLINTON WORKED WITH UNDER PRIVLIDGE CHILDREN AT THE TIME. SHE KNEW WHAT PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON WAS DOING FOR THE AUTO WORKERS. SHE SAW WHAT WAS GOOD THEN, AND SEE'S WHAT IS BAD, NOW. LISTEN TO HER SPEAK. WHEN TALKING ABOUT ISSUES LIKE PLANT CLOSINGS, PLANT CUT BACKS, MEDICAL INS., UNEMPLOYMENT BENIFITS, YOU KNOW SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT. OBAMMA HAS TAKEN LARGE CONTRIBUTIONS FROM AUTO AND OTHER PLANTS. COULD THIS EFFECT HIS OBJECTIVITY WHEN HAVING TO DEAL WITH THEM ? ANYBODY DEALING WITH THE AUTO OR OTHER PLANTS WOULD PROBABLY BE ASKING THE CLINTONS FOR ADVISE, ANYWAY. MY WIFE & I TALK ABOUT THE GOOD AND BAD TIMES EVERY ELECTION. THAT'S ONE REASON I AM VOTING FOR HILLARY CLINTON. THE OTHER IS..IF I DON'T, I WON'T EAT AND END UP SLEEPING IN THE GARGE. THE GARAGE WOULDN'T BE TOO BAD.

U A W AUTO WORKERS U A W AUTO WORKERS I JUST RETIRED AFTER 39 YEARS WITH CHRYSLER CORP. FROM A PLANT IN STERLING HEIGHTS, MI. A LOT HAS CHANGED. MOSTLY BECAUSE OF FOREIGN CAR SALES TAKING AWAY FROM AMERICAN CAR SALES. PLANTS ARE CLOSING, CUTTING BACK, OFFERING BUYOUTS, CUTTING WAGES, ETC., ETC. I DO KNOW THAT, IN ALL MY YEARS, MY WIFE AND I HAD OUR BEST YEARS DURING THE "CLINTON ADMINISTRATION".
KIDS WERE IN SCHOOL, BENEFITS WERE GOOD, NO LAYOFFS OTHER THAN CHANGE OVER. THEN WE GOT 95% OF OUR PAY. BILL CLINTON KNEW HEAVY INDUSTRY AND WHAT IT MENT TO OUR COUNTRY. WHEN LISTENING TO HILLARY CLINTON SPEAK ABOUT ISSUES SUCH AS INSURANCE, JOB LOSSES, EDUCATION, PLANTS CLOSING, YOU CAN TELL SHE IS REMEMBERING THE WAY THINGS WERE. SHE KNOWS THE WAY IT WAS AND WHAT WAS DONE TO GET IT RIGHT. A LOT HAS CHANGED MORE FOR THE BAD THAN GOOD, BUT I THINK HILLARY CLINTON AS PRESIDENT HAS MORE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO RESTORE OUR COUNTRY. BARACK OBAMMA HAS TAKEN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE AUTO AND OTHER LARGE MANUFACTURING FACILITIES. AS PRESIDENT OBAMMA WOULD BE ASKING THE CLINTONS FOR ADVISE. YOU GUYS IN MICHIGAN AND OHIO VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON. I AM AND AM TRYING LIKE HELL TO HELP HER. I KNOW WHAT WORKED FOR ME AND "KNOW" WHO WILL BE THE MOST HELP TO FIX WHAT WAS BROKEN.

The rules for the Michigan and Florida elections were very clear. These rules may not have been fair to the voters of these states, but they were made explicitly clear.

Obama followed the rules and his name was not on the Michigan ballot. hillary chose to ignore the rules.

There is no justification for switching the rules after the fact to allow uncontested votes to count.

I had to laugh watching Chuch Schumer on the talking heads today saying that there should be a do-over in Florida and Michigan, but that the do-over shouldn't be a caucus because hillary doesn't do well in that format.

Nice try hillary. Nice try Chuck

"Caught in the middle is [FL Democratic Party Chair] Thurman, whose greatest hope is that Obama or Clinton will emerge as a clear winner, with the other calling for unity. None of the do-over options seem feasible to her.

Thurman has ruled out caucuses because they would exclude military members from voting, would disenfranchise the elderly and would likely evolve into a logistical nightmare. "I don"t want the same mistakes [that were] made in 2000," she said.

A DNC plan for caucuses would have set up 150 polling places. There were 6,600 polling places for the Jan. 29 primary, when 1.7 million voters cast their ballots, Thurman noted. In Iowa, 225,000 voters came out on caucus night, at 1,700 sites."

If you want to talk fairness, please explain how a caucus, which disenfranchises so many from expressing their preference is fair.

There was no rule that they take their names of the ballot so please don't impugn Hillary for that.

People voted and their voices should be heard. In Florida, 1.7 million Democrats came out to vote.

I do concede it's a mess and there is no easy solution. Why was it so important to punish Mich and FL -- was it to give a leg up to SC and Nevada, the states of party leaders Clyburn and Reed? Why are their voters any more important that the voters of Mich and FL?

But I respect your adherence to rules and therefore I congratulate you for your principled position on the superdelegates. I am certain that given your respect for rules you agree 100% that the super delegates should have discretion to vote for whichever candidate they believe will make the best presidential candidate, right? After all that has been the clear rule since the early 1980's.

What Chuck said was that Clinton wouldn't favor a do-over by caucus because Obama tends to win those, AND that Obama wouldn't favor a do-over by primary because Clinton tends to win in that format. He was making the case for a practical negotiated solution at the Denver convention and pointing out the difficulties.

Chuck may have said that, but if he did, he might want to check his Math. Obama has won more primaries than Clinton. The only primary races Clinton has shown an overwhelming advantage over Obama in is races where he isn't campaigning.

If you lived in Florida you would have a much different opinion.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:32 AM on 02/18/2008

I don't know what the solution is--redo, caucuses, seat Florida and redo Michigan?

But the justification is easy to see.

Millions of Democrats (in two crucial states) shouldn't be disenfranchised.

Oh, come now we all know that Hillary is getting some solutions from Bill and we all hope he does not get them on another intern's dress!

No delegates should be allotted based on the Michigan Democratic primary due to a fatally-flawed election process.

First, Michigan"s primary election entailed (1) no candidates actively campaigned in the state depriving voters of critical contact and exposure, (2) many leading candidates had their name removed from the ballot, and (3) the national party had stripped Michigan of all its delegates to the national convention prior to the election. All meaningful reasons to participate were eliminated; any election carried out under this context cannot be considered accurate.

Moreover, write-in candidates were not allowed, and there was insufficient notification of this. The Lansing State Journal reported on January 17th that 3 percent of all ballots were disqualified due to write-ins of which 98 percent were Democratic ballots. In effect, 6 percent of the Democratic vote was thrown away (assuming that 50 percent of ballots issued were Democratic). Clearly, this is not the same party of 2000 fighting to county every presidential vote in Florida.

Lastly, prior to the election, there was announcement on some liberal blogs recommending that Michigan Democrats should vote for Mitt Romney in the "meaningless" Democratic primary as keeping this specific candidate alive on the Republican side would do more to ensure the ultimate success of Democrats in November. This recommendation was picked up by AP and reported in multiple Michigan newspapers. Its impact on the election is unknown.

The Michigan Democratic primary election results are simply unrepresentative garbage. No delegates should be assigned based on these results. Either a proper election needs to be executed where the results are known to matter to the populace, or no delegation should be seated. Otherwise this is just a farce.

I had admiration for both remaining Democratic candidates until Clinton started calling for the seating of these delegates. And she did not do it after the primaries themselves. She only did it much later as she fell behind in the delegate count. The Clinton campaign is opportunistic and shameless in their struggle to seat both the MI and FL delegations based on these flawed results!

No Jeremy, sadly you are shameless...
When was the last time you ran for delegate huh?
Nope never.

You get a bit different perspective when you have had the experience and have seen your vote go down the drain too:(

Giving any corporation everything they ask for is a bad bargain. Giving the car makers license to turn out crap cars that burn oil as ours do is giving them a license for suicide.

We bailed them out for this? Remember Chrysler?

All that being said, health care reform would put our industries on an equal playing field with countries who use tax money to defray health care instead of expecting each over or underfunded entity to pay for their employees insurance. Our greedy, over compensated insurance companies and their top-heavy adminstrations cost this country trillions of dollars. They make all our industries inefficient.

universal health care will take the burden of providing healthcare benefits off of businesses. That's a big chunk of their overhead.

Yes, I just saw a tv analysis of a GM plant that moved over the northern border and the average health insurance per employee per year dropped from over 6,000 dollars down to e800 dollars a year. That would mean a huge savings on the price of the car here in the US if theydidnot have to add thousands a car to cover health insurance that goes through the awful third party companies.

I have great respect for Obama for having the courage to go to Detroit and tell the automakers that they need to meet higher fuel efficiency standards. Your typical politician wouldn't have the guts to do that. Instead, they'd tell people what they want to hear kinda like Romney did when he said he'd bring jobs back to Michigan.

The American auto industry is in the toilet because they turn out crappy cars with shoddy materials designed to disintegrate in three or four years.
I dearly hope either candidate understands that and sets forth to create tougher standards for vehicular workmanship and durability, as well as better gas mileage.

The American auto industry is in the toilet because people like KarenZipDrive drive foreign cars. THAT'S it. I DRIVE..RACE..
AND BUILD HI-PO Engines in American cars. The quality of steel is very poor coming from Europe and Asia, mainly Japan, that is why there is so much plastic in todays cars. There is no support/structure in Jap steel to sustain the driving manners of American drivers and in the performance arena. BUY AMERICAM & VOTE AMERICAN Carry on Hillary and RIDE 4 AMERICA and the "VICTORY JUNCTION" kids

This is not the whole story.

Unfortunately the UAW members priced themselves out of business. GM and Ford can not put as much money into the design and manufacture of their cars as their global competitors do because the current and legacy cost of the union labor is painfully high.

Baloney...you sir or madam are a REPUBLICAN!
And how much money does the CEO of these car companies get?

The rest of the story is that it's very easy for people who are well off like you to nix anything that those who are not like me.

Funny that you won't dare explain to us all roughly what you do for a living and how well off you are?

I agree completely. I would be more than happy to buy an American made car, if only I had the same level of confidence as I do in German and Japanese cars.

I don't know about that. My 2003 Dodge Caravan with 140,000 miles is still running like a charm. I bought it used and it wasn't overpriced like the hondas and toyotas.
