Powerful 1.9M-Member Union Backs Obama

WASHINGTON — Sen. Barack Obama won the support Friday of the 1.9-million member Service Employees International Union, his second endorsement in as many days from large labor organizations and a fresh sign of momentum in the Democratic presidential race with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"There has never been a fight in Illinois or a fight in the nation where our members have not asked Barack Obama for assistance and he has not done everything he could to help us," Andy Stern, the union's president, told reporters in announcing the decision.

Stern said that in the months since union leaders met with several Democratic candidates last fall, "the excitement has been building and building for Obama."

The politically active union represents workers in health care, building services and other industries. It has donated more than $25 million to candidates in the past two decades, most of it to Democrats.

For Obama, the endorsement offers a chance to increase support in the primary states that are scheduled to vote in the next few weeks, particularly Ohio and Texas on March 4 and Pennsylvania on April 22.

On Thursday, Obama collected the support of the United Food and Commercial Workers, a politically active union with significant membership in the upcoming Democratic battlegrounds. The 1.3-million member UFCW has 69,000 members in Ohio and another 26,000 in Texas. The food workers also have 19,000 members in Wisconsin, which holds a primary Tuesday.

The union is made up of supermarket workers and meatpackers, with 40 percent of the membership under 30 years old. Obama has been doing especially well among young voters.

The SEIU delayed a national endorsement for months after inviting Obama, Clinton and other Democratic candidates to speak to its members in Washington.

In the interim, several state affiliates swung behind candidates, many of them choosing former Sen. John Edwards.

Edwards dropped out of the race just before the Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses on Feb. 5, leaving the field to Obama and Clinton.

Sarah Swisher, a superdelegate and member of the SEIU from Iowa City, had committed to Edwards. After he quit the race, she switched to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, but she changed her mind again after her union endorsed Obama. "That will be kind of cool," Swisher said. "I will have supported all three."

Stern said in a telephone interview that siding against Clinton was not an easy thing to do.

"It is hard because Senator Clinton is both a great senator and a good friend to the SEIU," he told The Associated Press shortly after the announcement.

Stern said the union waited this long to endorse a candidate because there was a lot of support for John Edwards and "we didn't want to look like we were bouncing between candidates." The Obama endorsement came after careful consideration, he said, and polling of the membership.

"Our members and leaders really feel that American needs profound change and something that engages the next generation," Stern said, adding that Obama fits the bill.

Last October, the union said it would hold off on an endorsement in the primary because of divisions that had been apparent among SEIU supporters of Edwards, Clinton and Obama.

"Given the importance of this election, we are encouraging members and leaders to act on their passion for the candidates and get involved on a statewide basis," Stern said at the time.

When Al Gore and George Bush were running for President, Al Gore ran an intelligent, TRASHLESS campaign and presented his platform based on the will of the people. Bush played every under-handed trick he could to win the White House " and he did win. " despite Gore getting the popular vote. Why did Bush win? He knew he could count on the American people to vote from fear instead of hope. That is how the powerful few end up controlling our lives. We, Americans, have yet to realize that we are strongest when we are united. We are divided when we are the HOPE VS. THE HOPELESS. So America you got what you wanted. We got someone to "RULE" over us instead of "GOVERNING" WITH US then we blamed Bush for the mess we are in. It is not his fault, America, it is our fault. This election is exactly the same. Now, here we are again voting based on our fears instead of voting based on our core beliefs that we are strong when we ALL HOPE AND DREAM AND CREATE SOLUTIONS together. THAT IS HOW We will then control America instead of being Congress" puppets or a voting statistic. We create the solutions. Remember how America was after 911 and Katrina? Look what America was able to do as ONE NATION without the permission of the government. A power- monger will have you believe your problems can only be solved by one person telling YOU what you need (Hillary). Mother knows what"s best for you. A true leader (Obama) will allow YOU TO PARTICIPATE in the solution process. If you cannot count on yourself to make an intelligent decision then why hold someone else accountable for making the wrong decisions for you? That is what "More of the Same" means in the White House. I guess some people need government to tell them what to do for themselves. As for me, Hillary and McCain will not excite fear in me, have me question my own judgement , or KILL MY HOPE. The very audacity.

Hillary Clinton in pole position!

Guess that relegates Barack Obama to underdog, again!

Barack Obama is a rude brazen opportunist.

For the longest time America knew of Hillary Clinton"s intention to run for President. As Democrats we were all united behind her looking forward to the day we would finally take back the White House. We were all ready to work hard together to make history electing the first woman President. Then came the brazen opportunist Barack Obama, a man all ego and no substance, to disrespect and divide the very party that has worked so long and so hard to give him and people like him the opportunities he now enjoys. Barack Obama is the kind of narcissist who can"t walk past a mirror and admire himself. A man whose brazen opportunism has no limits. A man who doesn't know the definition of respect or community, who only thinks about one person, himself, when he makes a decision. Thanks to him the party is now divided, hundreds of millions of dollars and valuable time has been wasted in a primary. Time and money that will be needed to win against the Republicans in the general election. After George Bush screwed things up so back Barack Obama saw a window of opportunity and decided to take it. Where was he before that window opened? Thanks to him we will now probably lose the general election and then where will we be? He will still be fine. People like him always are. The rest of us will be left with a barrel full of pipe dreams four or even eight more years of John McCain.

Seems like a brazen racist remark!

Wow - I wasn't ready to work together to make Senator Clinton the first woman president, and I don't think anyone gets to decide for the citizens except the citizens. Noone deserves POTUS.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D) Missouri, elected for the first time to the United States Senate in November 2006, explained why she was supporting Senator Barack Obama to be President of the United States. She is the only one of the 16 female Senators who now is.

These are her words. "It was a little nudging from my 18 year old Daughter." "It was Maddie in my face." "She, (Maddie), said, "How can you look yourself in the mirror, you"re a slug, you"re playing it politically safe, I believe in this guy, I"ll never speak to you again if you don"t stand up and have some courage." "
"It was pretty intense, she was right, it was like a cold bucket of water on my head, she was absolutely right."

This is one of the new breed of Democrats we sent to Congress in 2006 to end the Iraq War. The war has not ended and this is what we got instead. Are your kids holding their breath unless you vote for Barack Obama? Are we making the right choice now?

I saw this post a few hours ago. If it were decent, I would overlook it, but it's whinny and has nothing to do with the piece above. I've also seen your profile which is basically 3 or 4 posts cut and pasted over different articles.

Get some new material.

Suggestion to all the Canadian trolls.

Go argue about French at school or somethin'.
What, Canadian politics is too boring for you?

You wanna participate in big time?

It wouldn't occur to any American or European to go to a Canadian blog.

Now piss off.

Obama has the approval of Mexican president Calderon, LaRaza and SEIU which was instrumental in organizing the marches by the illegal aliens protesting for "their rights". Has Obama gotten lost and forgotten he's supposed to be campaigning for the job of President of the United States, not Mexico ?

"SEIU (Service Employees International Union) has focused much of its energy on recruiting immigrants and advocating vociferously for their needs outside of the workplace. That's why SEIU, with its signature purple logo, has been a prominent supporter and organizer of the recent wave of rallies and marches in Denver and elsewhere advocating for citizenship for illegal immigrants.

"...SEIU's leadership role in Colorado immigrant advocacy has also drawn criticism. The union helped lead the drive for the recent immigrant marches despite warnings from political consultants and Hispanic community leaders that the demonstrations were causing negative public sentiment.

"Some labor experts and advocates of stricter enforcement of immigration laws say the union is encouraging illegal immigration by helping people who sneak across the border get better-paying jobs with benefits. They question how a union can effectively fight for all its members when some of them compete with the influx of illegal immigrants who will work for less and tolerate worse working conditions.

"If national union leaders like Jimmy Hoffa were still alive, "They would be in shock that these unions are doing what they're doing today," said Waldo Benavidez, a social service center director and former union leader who is helping to lead the illegal immigrant ballot initiative. "They're aiding and abetting employment of illegals in this country, which hurts the working man, which they are supposed to be representing."

"Vernon Briggs, a labor economist at Cornell University who wrote a 2001 book called Immigration and American Unionism, said...that SEIU's tactic of pursuing immigrant workers is a bad idea. "I think it's like taking a shortcut through quicksand," he said. "As long as you're pushing for a lax immigration policy, you're simply undercutting the interest of American workers.""

I remember RFK, JFK, and I actually met MLK. All three, appeared on the world stage, because, optimistic people like us, put them there. There was a feeling of positive expectation in each of them. Americans were looking to the future without fear. We thought we could stop the war and we did stop the war! We fought to end racism, and while, we are still working on it, we are seeing some results, that we would not see, without the fight. There will never be another Bobby Kennedy, but Obama is here and has a possibility of becoming president. We know what to expect with the Clintons, and we don't need more of that. I have been defending the Clintons, since he won the nomination, in 1992. When the ex-president pulled the 'race card', in the south recently, I realized that we better get behind Obama. I recognize that Barrack Obama is not a lefty, he's a middle-of-the-roader at best, and this concerns me, but I believe he is our best hope. He may be our only hope. This government has been controlled by warmongers for over forty years. If this country elects another warmonger, we may never recover. Stop the Fear, Give peace a chance!

The SEIU is the same union that backed Obama in Nevada, they didn't help Obama at all!

Righto, Obama only won more delegates that Hillary in that caucus, even though Hillary won the popular vote. Yeah I guess they didn't make a difference.

You're confusing California and Nevada - two very different states. The Culinary Workers endorsed Obama in Nevada. The SEIU endorsed Obama in California.

The difference this time is that they're doing it well in advance of the election, and they're mounting an aggressive GOTV drive for him. In the case of California, it was the state union, and the endorsement just came three days before the election.

Bash all you want but the Service Employees International Union stated today that Obama shares their values and commitments. Since this union is not only pushing for comphrensive immigration reform to legalize a large majority of their workers, they also wish for a more open border policy.

Yeah, change is on the way. Will the Mexican flag accompany that change ?

People had better open their eyes and start finding out who the backers of these candidates are. Of course, I know to question Obama is off limits to the majority of posters here , but he needs to either represent America or Mexico. We already have a president who didn't do it. We don't need another one.

And, no, I'm not a Hillary supporter so don't froth at the mouth.

In other words . . . oops . . . slipped into my first lengua . . . what's in a flag as long as the Constitution stands?

Hmmm, sort of thought that maybe the US constitution was for the citizens of the US, not the world.

I have had concerns about which flag Sen. Obama would be following since reading what his church stands for. Sure sounded in its statement that Africa came first. Now maybe Mexico.

Who the heck knows? Maybe when you represent so many changes you end up supporting the flag of many different nations.

IF Obama is beaten, we know what it is, for sure. Putin made a very interesting remark: "In order to be head of state; you have to have a head." Other countries are watching this election process here very closely. Especially since a black man of substance is running. The hell with what Bill Clinton says, pulling his pants down! Watch this democracy!
