Sources: Top Hillary Advisers Repeatedly Complained To MSNBC About Chris Matthews

Talking Points Memo   |  Greg Sargent   |   February 15, 2008 12:17 AM

Yesterday I speculated that the Hillary campaign's allegation of a pattern of sexist remarks at MSNBC -- a charge that was made in response to reporter David Shuster's "pimped out" remark about Chelsea -- was primarily driven by anger at Chris Matthews.

In making these charges, the Hillary campaign has always been careful to avoid mentioning Matthews by name, but political insiders believe he is who Hillary advisers were talking about, even if it hasn't been confirmed by them.

MSNBC has become a huge disappointment to me. It has all but abandoned any intelligent discourse on politics. I am no longer impressed with most of the hosts, male or female, or with most of their guests. Most of the talk focuses on what various journalists think who is ahead; who is behind; who is slipping, falling and/or who has momentum? Why does matter what Andrea, Joe S. or Keith or any of the others think about who is winning? How could it possibly make any difference to me whether or not Chris Matthews likes Obama?

What happened to the issues? Why can't we find out more details about how the various candidates differ on the vital issues of the day? What happened to Iraq? How do the candidates feel about qualified or unqualified support for Israel? South American trade issues? Cuba? It is an unfortunate state of affairs when there is so much talk on the part of these personalities, with so little to show for it.

Words are important! Obama is so weak, his followers have to carry him. He's their savior, so they don't mind.

Well - The Democratic Party can't afford "to carry" Obama. He can never beat McCain, not even as a democrat. We've got to drop him FAST!

Stand on your own feet Obama. Speak your own words.

John Edwards - Please sue MSNBC for not giving the VOTERS a level playing field. Obama has received so much affirmative action, it has undercut the voters say. I want a new Voters Rights Act where the internet users cannot control the outcome of our Democratic Party primary.

MSNBC timed Obama's surge perfectly so that the voting results are not accurate.

In media Matters, there is a seperate site of Mathews watch, for his inappropriare remarks againt Hillary.
I do not watch him, my questions is to the advertisers, why they still continue to sponsor his show ?

Again, why was Don Imus fired from MSNBC ? He is a radio shock jock, while Mathews is on prime time , and claims to be giving us news, instead is a hatemonger, and spews out his venom on air, day in and day out, and has been doing it for years !

I urge MSNBC, to take him off the air.

I did not start out thinking about Obama in a negative way. A number of months ago I was awed with the possibility that Obama "might be the one". I asked myself where that feeling came from. I desired hope and optimism. I desired a leader that would make me feel those emotions. Obama said he would and he did. It was when he announced his candidancy for president that I attached those emotions to Obama. I called it "the voice of authority" and I believed he had superior judgement like he said he did.

Then when he got Imus ( a radio personality) fired (I believe), I realized how much power he already had. I began to ask myself questions about his judgement. Did he really want partnerships or like he said, he "would not go on Imus' program again". Imus was fired because of Obama's words. It worried me. The power of it worried me. Everyone's acceptance of it worried me. Imus was powerful but not equal to Obama's power. Many were giddy with how powerful Obama was (because he got Imus fired). The giddiness worried me and subsequent racial divide blogs worried me.

When I was in NYCity going to school in the 80's, I was thinking that future radical change would happen by a "voice of authority" and that the voice would be a black american male voice. And that it would be so powerful as to influence masses because of a new technology. I wanted to research why this "voice" could influence masses by comparing it to the way Hitler had used the new technologies of his time - the microphone, the radio, and film. People had little experience before Hitler, of a leader using these technologies. The new technology increased by 10/100/1000? Hitler's influence or power. In my thinkiing, I imagined this voice to influence radical change. The 60's were a time of radical change. I felt good about the changes in civil rights, womens rights, human rights.

I no longer trust radical change Obama style.

I remember that time Matthews said he finally had evidence of criminality coming out of the Cheney office because he posited that Cheney's office wa trying to muzzle him. I wonder, will he spout the same next time he is drunk and shoot back the HRC is a criminal?

America is not free under Bush.

It won't be free under a Clinton White House.

What happened to Freedom of the Press?

Are we a Democracy or a Dictatorship?

Independent voter and Lisette, in a democracy, shouldn't the American people have the opportunity to hear both sides of any issue and judge for themselves? I am constantly amazed at how it seems okay when the spin is favorable to someone they like. I think there is freedom of the press and the problem rests with those who own the press. I think they are afraid of Hillary.

I have watched Mr Matthews for years now but I've noticed that within the past few years he has really changed and not for the better. He fawns and gushes over powerful male figures and he is very misogynistic regarding female political figures. HIs latest comments regarding Sen Obama are the creepiest yet. He said and I quote, "I have to tell you, you know, it's part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama's speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often."
Good grief how uncomfortably creepy is that? Jung would have a field day with comments like that.

so much for tolerance in our (democratic) party. irrelevant because he obviously supports a democratic candidate? so let's shove him to the republican side? have you forgotten his roots? his switch-over (from repub to dem) during the anti-vietnam war movement? his service in the peace corp?

who are you to decide who is irrelevant and/or should or shouldn't comment?

where is free speech and tolerance? have we (democrats) gone mad?

either candidate (H or O) will be preferable to another 4 years of a republican. get off your high horse & act like the tolerant party we are supposed to be.

The air waves belong to the American people, not for chris matthews and his likes to spew their hate for one candidate or the other. Can you imagine an election in this country that was actually based on ISSUES AND NOT SPIN??? Oh, my God, would you bring it on???

The first, last and only thing I have in common with the Clintons is I complain about that useless, self absorbed, loudmouth asshole Mathews too. And I agree with the substance of his Hillary criticisms.

So today, he's calling the Clinton press people kneecappers? What is it with Matthews? No one ever reeled him in when he was at his worst . . . and now as it's finally catching up with him - he calls foul? There were nights when I felt he was thoroughly unchecked, bating, stuck on a point that no one wanted to address as though the panel was embarrassed at his inference (usually about Bill's prowess) but it was during the time of the campaign when the crowds were responding well to Bill. Then it tipped the other way and Bill was getting criticized and pulled back - I felt there was absolutely a correlation. Chris was part of stirring it up, saying again and again and again - "can she get a leash on him, can she control him, what will happen in the Whitehouse?" He was out of line and now refusing to self examine? He wants to be what, Limbaugh, Matthews style?

Yeah for all past bolo punches.

Reading so many Clinton haters who, like loyal FOX News watchers, can't see beyond their on bais to be objective, I've reminded of something Bill Maher said recently:

"I mean, you may not want Hillary Clinton for president, but there is absolutely no reason anyone has a – would ever have to hate this person. You may not say she inspires you, but there is nothing hate-able about Hillary Clinton. If you hate Hillary Clinton, it is so about you."

As well as Paul Krugman's column the other day:

"What’s particularly saddening is the way many Obama supporters seem happy with the application of “Clinton rules” — the term a number of observers use for the way pundits and some news organizations treat any action or statement by the Clintons, no matter how innocuous, as proof of evil intent."

I wonder how this people will react in the fall when the MSM, who they are now defending for unfairly trashing the Clintons, start telling glowing tales of Saint John McCain while swiftboating Senator Obama.
