WASHINGTON — Temper, temper. Republican John McCain is known for his. He's been dubbed "Senator Hothead" by more than one publication, but he's also had some success extracting his hatchet from several foreheads.

Even his Republican Senate colleagues are not spared his sharp tongue.

"F--- you," he shouted at Texas Sen. John Cornyn last year.

"Only an a------ would put together a budget like this," he told the former Budget Committee chairman, Sen. Pete Domenici, in 1999.

"I'm calling you a f------ jerk!" he once retorted to Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley.

With Cornyn, he smoothed things over quickly. The two argued during a meeting on immigration legislation; Cornyn complained that McCain seemed to parachute in during the final stages of negotiations. "F--- you. I know more about this than anyone else in the room," McCain reportedly shouted.

Cornyn chuckled at the memory of what he called McCain's "aggressive expressions of differences." The Texan has endorsed McCain.

"He almost immediately apologized to me," Cornyn said last week. "I accepted his apology, and as far as I'm concerned, we've moved on down the road."

The political landscape in Arizona, McCain's home state, is littered with those who have incurred his wrath. Former Gov. Jane Hull pretended to hold a telephone receiver away from her ear to demonstrate a typical outburst from McCain in a 1999 interview with The New York Times.

McCain has even blown up at volunteers and, on occasion, the average Joe.

He often pokes fun at his reputation: "Thanks for the question, you little jerk," he said last year to a New Hampshire high school student wondering if McCain, at 71, was too old to be president.

Other times, his ire is all too real. This has prompted questions about whether his temperament is suited to the office of commander-in-chief or whether it might handicap him in a presidential campaign against either Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton, who are not known for such outbursts.

"I decided I didn't want this guy anywhere near a trigger," Domenici told Newsweek in 2000.

His irascibility fits with McCain's proud image as a straight talker willing to say what people don't want to hear.

Yet McCain's temper hinders his efforts to make peace with his critics and rally Republicans behind his candidacy for president. That could be a big problem, because his most persistent foes _ conservative radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Focus on the Family founder James Dobson _ talk to tens of millions of people each day.

McCain and his advisers insist the acrimony is about matters of policy: "We have disagreements on specific issues from time to time," McCain recently said of his critics.

In fact, the disputes often are as much about style as they are about substance.

McCain's tone was certainly on Dobson's mind when he issued a stinging anti-endorsement on Super Tuesday. He mentioned various issues, but Dobson also said the senator "has a legendary temper and often uses foul and obscene language."

Privately, some conservatives grouse that McCain can seem more convivial toward his liberal colleagues. Just last week, McCain had an animated conversation and shared a belly laugh with liberal Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy, his partner on controversial immigration reforms, on the Senate floor.

And then there is his choice of words _ not just the expletives, but also the use of dismissive phrases such as "agents of intolerance" to describe televangelists Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell during the 2000 presidential campaign.

Yet McCain reconciled with Falwell before his death in 2007 and has done so with many others.

McCain has also smoothed things over with Sen. Thad Cochran, who had said very recently that the idea of McCain as GOP nominee sent a chill down his spine. McCain has battled for years with the Mississippi Republican, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, over pet projects or "earmarks" inserted by committee members into spending bills.

On the Senate floor last Tuesday, Cochran greeted McCain warmly, with a broad smile and a hug.

Grassley described his relations with McCain as "friendly, but not close."

"John's a person that I have a lot of disagreements with, but you've got to have a lot of respect for him," Grassley told reporters recently. "For what he's done to defend freedom, as a Navy pilot and as a POW, you've got to have a lot of respect for him for sticking to his guns, being way out ahead of the president that the policy needed to change in Iraq."

"I'm not speaking as if I'm a born-again supporter of John McCain, I'm just trying to express it the way that I see him, and maybe some aspects of him being a good president," Grassley said.

McCain's defenders are weary of talk about his temperament. They point out that for all the decorum of the Senate, many members are known for raging at colleagues or even throwing shoes and other objects at aides.

For that matter, Dobson, the Focus on the Family founder so concerned about McCain's "legendary temper," apparently has a temper of his own. "He once berated one of our staffers to tears because he simply had to wait a few minutes to see the member," said a Capitol Hill aide who requested anonymity out of deference to his boss. Another aide said he witnessed the scene.

Since he rolled up big victories on Super Tuesday and forced his main rival, Mitt Romney, from the race, McCain has worked quickly to win over his enemies.

He delivered a well-received speech at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, and he met last week with some of his biggest congressional foes, the uniformly conservative House Republican leadership.

Progress won't happen overnight, said conservative Republican strategist Greg Mueller.

"I hope they'll be resolved by the time we all go to convention, but it's going to take a while to mend some of the wounds and get everybody back together," Mueller said.

What's with all the -----'s ? What is F--k You ? Fink You? : You are a fink. A squealer. As in, "Since Nixon was a rat fink and you look like Nixon, Fink You ! " Funk you ? As in depression ? The economy is in a deep funk, therefore, funk you ! Falk You ? As in Peter Falk ? " You are acting strangely like a TV detective named Columbo, therefore, Falk You !" That's the problem with censorship, you never really get the actual meaning and it leads to misunderstanding and confusion.
Butt hay, f--k you.

Well we are learning he has forgotten many things as he goes along speaking to groups. He doesn't appear to be scripted as he has gone all over the place with stuff. That he appears to be almost too calm and flat when he talks not putting much emotions into speaking. Knowing his history of explosive temper it has seemed he was medicated or doing a really good job of keeping his mouth shut. We don't need him getting angry in the face of someone who has their finger on a war button or switch. We also don't need a woman president who will tear up and cry when things don't go their way or she's sad. For sure all we don't need is someone who the world can hear cackle like a witch or some strange animal!!

Vietnam veterans have special problems with frustration, anger & rage.
Our war was unique in the history of American warfare:

a) It was the most unpopular foreign war in our history.
b) It was the first foreign war that American lost.
c) Some accused us of not fighting hard enough during the Tet Offensive of '68. We won every battle, but we underestimated the enemy's will to win & it turned out to be a political victory for the NVA & VC.
MUCHO ANGER,
d) When I returned in '69, my uniform was spit at on a street in San Francisco by some long-hair types.
e) Others, on their way to Vietnam, were called "baby-killers" by the war protestors.
f) After 21-months of combat, I was discharged & returned to college in '72. The sociology prof told my class that I should be tried for war crimes.
MORE ANGER & NOW RAGE
g) I know many of the villages we destroyed had civilians in them -- but because the VC controlled their region, they had the misfortune of being in the "Red Zone." FOR WHAT?
h) Two of my roommates were killed & two of my co-pilots were killed. FOR WHAT?
i) I have to live the rest of my life knowing that my "friendly fire" killed five American soldiers who were being overrun by the VC. FOR WHAT?
j) Because of my anger & rage, I lost two marriages, several jobs, and almost lost my son. FOR WHAT?
k) Vietnam vets committed suicide and acts of violence, were incarcerated or committed to mental institutions in the years before the Veterans Administration (VA) would treat us for our PTSD. . .

l) We Vietnam vets had to fight the VA for years and years to get them to recognize the terrible effects of Agent Orange & PTSD on veterans. Many veterans have had to wait 1-2 years or longer before they get their disability benefits.
m) Because of these experiences, many Vietnam veterans still consider their relationship with the VA System to be an adversarial one. Even today, often times it takes more that six months to see an eye doctor or a neurologist. Yes, the VA is under-staffed and under-funded,
BUT WHY?
The President and Congress love to use the slogan "Support Our Troops," and yet, they will not mandate the money for the VA to provide all the care necessary for our wounded troops.
So my buddies & I were stuck with a worthless, unwinnable war (unless we would have killed 2/3rds of the Vietnamese).
We lost 58,000. They lost 1-2 million. FOR WHAT?
MORE ANGER & MORE RAGE.
AND WHY were the Vietnam vets put through all this crap?
Because of a disastrous foreign policy started under Eisenhower and continued by Kennedy, Johnson and finally ended by Nixon. Because our politicians refuse to fully fund the VA.
Because someone said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."
Because a 19-year old believed the politicians, the MSM and his Pastor -- all who told him, "Godless Communism is an enemy which must be destroyed."
Because draftees went to Vietnam, even though they didn't want to.
My Legacy?
That it would never happen again. . .

The Truth?
The neoCons & politicians have figured out how to have their dirty wars and to avoid all the domestic turmoil of the sixties: no war taxes & no military draft.
Wallah. . . Iraq. AND FOR WHAT? (Oil?)
And while America's fineness are being depleted with 15-month, multiple combat tours, high rates of divorce & suicide -- the voters "go shopping" at the President's urging.
FOR WHAT?
Additionally, Senator McCain was tortured for many years by the enemy.
FOR WHAT?
Do Vietnam vets have problems controlling our frustration, anger & rage? Yes.
Do we like being escorted out of the VA hospital because of another anger episode? No.
Are we responsible for our behavior and the consequences of our uncontrolled anger & rage? Yes.
Do we like taking the medications that keep us emotionally & mentally stable? No.
John McCain thinks that if we had stayed the course in Vietnam, we would have WON (ditto Iraq).
For this reason, I won't vote for my fellow Vietnam vet. My reason has nothing to do with his anger.

I lived through that time myself, friend, and your post lacks the slightest ring of truth. Certain of your claims are demonstrable bullshit.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn,...about his swearing, that is. I do care that he displays a zeal to use military force, instead of using discussion and diplomacy, to resolve disagreements.

"I do care that he displays a zeal to use military force, instead of using discussion and diplomacy, to resolve disagreements. "

And are you going to be a part of the "military force", or are you just an huffing & puffing neocon.

Unless you're willing to be shot at in combat, shut up.

Hmm... I read that comment as mamacats disapproval of a zeal to use military force.

Unless you are sure of the intent of those comments, perhaps you might want to take your own advice and shut up.

That, and the fact that Hillary drank him under the table on one of their little "fact finding" tours.....

Oh yeah - he's a piece of work in progress.

He is bound by his words. More than he knows.

He will be living it the rest of his life.

'Colorful' language I have no problem with, but an inability to control one's temper is something that should be universally recognized as a deal-breaker in a presidential candidate. I doubt seriously if it is entirely a result of his time as a p.o.w., but, regardless of its genesis, it is a real liability in a person who would have their finger on the trigger.

It is perfectly possible for a person to be a hero and still be completely unsuitable for the highest positions. There are lots of former p.o.w.'s. He made it through that, though it's not a position he applied for. It's admirable that he chose to serve his nation, as did many others. Being a prisoner of war doesn't add to one's qualifications nor does it disqualify one; it's the person that one is NOW that matters, and McCain is too loose a cannon, temperamentally speaking, to be entrusted with situations that require a cool head.

He's chosen to sell his innate decency for the mess of potage that is the Republican nomination; if he's seriously pissed at anyone, it's probably himself.

I don't want a president with a bad temper and I don't want one who swears all the time. It's a sign of poor thinking skills. Also I really do want to hear the whole story behind his divorce. Sometimes a divorce is needed but it also might be a sign that he doesn't keep his word.

McCain to Achmandinejad: "Mr. President, I thought we could solve this nuke problem by diplomacy and common ground. I'm sure you just want nukes for peaceful purpose but we only want to verify what you're, oh,oh, here it comes, look out, I'm sorry but FUCK YOU AND THE FUCKING MULLAHS AND THE CAMELS THAT BROUGHT THEM!" World peace ensues.
