Obama Speeches Have New Policy Detail

If he does say so himself, Senator Barack Obama delivers a fine political speech. "Don't be fooled by this talk about speeches versus solutions," Mr. Obama told a crowd of Wisconsin voters. "It's true, I give a good speech. What do I do? Nothing wrong with that."...

...Yet as he traveled across Wisconsin last week, Mr. Obama seemed to have let loose of a little more of his inner-wonk that his strategists had once urged him to keep on the shelf if he wanted to win. Even he was dismissing Mrs. Clinton's criticism, he appeared to be taking it to heart, a tacit suggestion that as a line of attack, she might be on to something.

Words are important! Obama is so weak, his followers have to carry him. He's their savior, so they don't mind.

Well - The Democratic Party can't afford "to carry" Obama. He can never beat McCain, not even as a democrat. We've got to drop him FAST!

Stand on your own feet Obama. Speak your own words.

Good grief: There are no words that have never been used by anyone else!

Now Obama is accused of "plagarism" because his speeches and Patrick's both contain the mantra "Just words" and quote the most famous phrases of the Declaration of Independence and Martin Luther King"s "I Have a Dream" speech.

But, as James Joyner in "OutsideTheBeltway.com" says: these words are iconic in American politics and, especially, for black candidates.

This is NOT a case of a candidate lifting pages from another speech. It is a phrase that is rhetorically repeated. Big deal!

Yes, Obama's followers are "carrying" him. He's pulled off the unlikely feat of turning enthusiastic support into a fundraising base and a highly effective political organizing machine. In other words, Obama is one of those rare politicians whose candidacy is owned and propelled by the people who believe in him. I don't see how this makes him "weak".

Who's "carrying" your candidate? I'll give you a hint- www.fec.gov.

Rice University history professor just said on NPR that this country's most successful presidents were the best orators. Obama's ability to move a crowd is a precursor to the positive things he will be able to achieve as president.

Just words? Barack gives a fabulous retort to the Clinton and McCain attacks on the power of oratory skill to move people to action. Share his speech for those who haven't heard it, defenders of inspirational speeches can not say it better.

Speeches are great but they don't pay the bills or bring jobs or run an effective government. Hillary has done a great job for the people of New York. Obamas says he won't take lobbyist money but his chief strategist Axelrod is a lobbyist for Exelon a Corp that gave Obama $227,000 this campaign. So as long as the check comes in the mail and it is not hand delivered by the lobbyist your in bed with then that's a new kind of politics.

F*@k the Clintons
Free market republicans in sheeps clothing.

Americans should be doing everything in their power to make sure this years election has neither a Bush nor a Clinton's name on either ticket.

This is America not a monarchy. First people laughed at republicans for ushering in Bush's to the white house like some mindless king wanting monarchist.
Now its the Democrats turn to decide wether they believe in Democracy or are just the other side of the mindless minions of those who would rather have monarchy than a democracy.
I find Hillary's run just as offensive as George W Bush.
These two families are essentilaly breaking eletion law by skirting term limits through this keeping a member of their immediate family in the white house perpetually.
This should be illegal.
Wake up people. These two families are the exact same animal. America must end the criminal rule of both.

What you stupidly refer to as monarchy has no bearing on the Clintons. As I recall, Bill Clinton's daddy died before he was born, and he grew up in Arkansas without silver spoons. His mother worked for a living and supported her son's ability. He married a woman as bright as him with as much gumption to run for political office. The power they have has been of their own hard work. To closely tie them to the Bush family who have generation after generation been handed a throne is wrong and stupid.

I'm not worried about a Bush dynasty anymore - Little Georgey killed it for Jeb and the rest of the Bushshits. Yippee!
Poor Obama won't get into the first year of his "dynasty" if he wins the primaries - he's a softie, which is why so many Dems love him and the Repubs will crucify him 10 times more than they could Hillary. He'll lose the General election within the first month of winning the primary...he'll be a mush of blood and bone.

We have fallen for Obama, enraptured by his poetic oratory and the strength of his inspirational ideas and have been caught up in what has been coined the "Obama swoon."
Hillary has attempted to combat his vision, described by as part MLK and part JFK, by reminding anyone who would listen that Obama is inexperienced, and talk is cheap and that what the country really needs is someone with the ability to navigate the politics and to actually get stuff done. Nobody is listening, and it doesn"t matter because the big ideas that Obama offers will redefine our country. He is truly the candidate of change. He has articulated the vision.
"This was a victory for hope.....by showing that we could disagree with each other without being disagreeable...put your cynicism down...by challenging you to stake in your neighbor's dreams and struggles as well as your own..... Democrats and Independents and Republicans are here. You are liberal and moderate and conservative....This has never been my campaign. It has always been yours. The real heroes here are the thousands of you, here...You are the ones who transformed this from a political campaign to a movement for change and I am honored and awed by what you have done...You made a claim on history....to govern in a whole new way, to make change real and lasting and meaningful. to refuse the politics of division and fear.... 'hope for the best and work for it.'..."
Inspired and brilliant. It is, however, actually the words of David Axelrod"s client immediately previous to his campaign work for Obama. It is the acceptance speech of Deval Patrick, black governor of the State of Massachusetts.
We know that Obama is not the experienced candidate. Is it a possibility that what is really behind Obama that has made us all a part of the "swoon' is simply the very effective product of David Axelrod political guru, who validated the message during the successful Governors campaign in Massachusetts, which he managed? Have we all been suckered by illusion?

I love how MSNBC and all the teen pundits have boiled this down to "upscale, college educated and young people for Obama" and "downscale women for Hillary." Chrissy Boy can't believe only 6% of Americans have a four-year degree and yet 50% of Obama's supporters have one. Well, I have a fine four-year degree and am downscale as hell now that the bottom fell out of my home's value. I have worked for 42 years straight with no breaks. I stand proud with any American who works for a living and still is struggling by! What woman has not sided with a guy going places? Or a charmer? We have all fallen for those. What woman has not been wronged by some guy but still hung in? What woman has not done almost anything to stay afloat and take care of her children? Not all of us have spent our whole lives also trying to serve the country, though. I am downscale! And proud of it! Four-year degree or no!

I have to keep training them "how to do the job".

So what - If Obama has the "educated" white people, the blacks and the young.

Hillary has the working class white people, the hispanics and the seniors.

Ask yourself. Where do you fit? Whose struggle do you want to support this year?

SCOOP OF THE DAY . . .

Folks I've spoken to tell me that there is message COORDINATION going on between the Clinton and McCain campaigns.

We know the two are close friends. So, perhaps this isn't even much of a scoop. But to hear it whispered on the wind provokes some interesting questions about the process.

I am personally dismayed at the attack on Obama's oratory. Our great history speaks to the value of oratory in effective leadership - if one doubts this just look at the effectiveness of George Bush. But the question is, what is the job of the President?.....

"Obama's (economic) plan. is the most shameless piece of potential plagiarism that I have ever seen. He basically took Clinton's words and Clinton's policies and called them his own. If I were a professor I'd give him an F and try to get him kicked out of school," said Kevin Hassett, Sen. Great oratory is fine, and even desireable...BUT if you are running for POTUS, there has to be more...there has to be ACTION to back up the oratory.

Unfortunately, the primary actions exhibited by Barack Obama in this campaign have been passing the collection plate and public displays of legislative cowardice and hypocracy ... To wit...

Last summer he (and Hillary) waited till the last minute to vote on the Iraq funding bill, slipping into Senate chambers almost hoping to go unnoticed... That bill included special funding for life-saving MRAPs (thanks to the specific and diligent efforts of former candidate, JOE BIDEN, the one that got away!)...they were unsure which vote would be most politically advantageous, hence their hesitation...

THEN, in September Obama did not join the others for the well-publicized BIDEN-Gelb Iraq resolution vote (which Biden got passed with a significant bi-partisan majority) OR the Kyl-Lieberman Iran resolution vote... HE NEVER EVEN SHOWED UP, and instead gave a speech to members of the Congressional Black Caucus ironically highlighting the message of being people of action and not just words!... Demonstrating what a legislative coward AND a hypocrite he is in one fell swoop... COMPOUNDED BY THE FACT THAT HE HAS BEEN GIVEN A BIG FAT PASS BY THE MEDIA ON BOTH COUNTS. (Criticize too hard and run the risk of being considered racist.)

So stirring oratory is wonderful, just not by an empty suit...

But then, hundreds of thousands of people follow stirring orators with back-up bands in arena mega-"churches" every Sunday, filling those deep collection plates like good little sheepies, so I guess we/I shouldn't be so surprised that it's working in this campaign too...

It all just makes me very squirmy...and concerned that we'll end up with another Jimmy Carter administration: ill-equipped and one-term.

P.S. I don't like HRC either...She (and her new campaign mgr. Maggie Williams - ugh! - both let Bob Johnson get away with an unconscionable (sic) remark regarding Obama which was, IMHO, what torpedoed her campaign, not Bill' remarks.

Do you know what I find really disgusting? That a politician would manipulate people in order to get them to like and admire him. What is this world coming to when a man like Obama can fool 20,000 people to show up to a venue and listen to him give a canned speech and cheer and cheer and be all excited and enthusiastic and get the stupid idea in their heads that they can make any difference and should have hope that tomorrow could be better?

What is happening when people make an emotional bond to a mere politician? Do these people not have brains in their heads? Are they on drugs?

You would think it was 1992 and Bill Clinton was running for president.

Manipulate?

Instilling fear in millions of Americans? Naming legislation for the opposite of its effect? Screaming the need for near-dictatorial powers to protect us when ceding such power weakens our Constitution, the law he swore to uphold?

Kevenseven should look at Bush for a while before casting a stone a Senator Obama.

Americans are waking up from the sleepy fog they'bve been in under this administration, and they don't like what they see. Americans are starting to fulfill THEIR constitutional obligation to be an informed electorate.

The best conduit for bonding with issues is through an articulate speaker who can help us be more truthfully informed.

NeoLiberal:

An articulate speaker who in the end leaves people 'blank' when asked what he said; other than he's great, he's inspiring, sounds like mass hysteria to me. Couple that with the hate fest against Hillary and it verifies the hype works!

But look a bit deeper and all he's done on issues is steal Hillary's.

What do you think he'll do when he has to think for himself when facing Bin Laden et al?

Do you know what I find really disgusting? A civilian that would manipulate people's opinions simply because he/she does not like people being inspired. We, the people, like Obama for a lot more than mere "emotions." Neither Hillary or McCain have more substance than Obama yet people treat Barack as if her were a teenaged dumb blonde! What is wrong if the intelligent, moderate, down to earth, handsome candidate also happens to inspire us? Sure, he may turn out to succumb to politics as usual but, in the very least, he is certainly a good role model for future generations (i.e. an outsider of mixed racial background becoming president on his own steam because he's smart and hard working) and that is a good thing.

Hillary knocks Obama's speaking skills because she is not as good at it. He knocks her experience skills because his resume is not as thick - being younger. That's the way it goes. Actually, Obama is a policy wonk from way back, so he brings both skills to the table.
Hillary gives a good speech too - but she also brings a lot of baggage with her. There are two reasons why I supported Obama from the start. #1 - When Hillary worked on her health care plan, it was done in secret - like Cheney and his oil task force. I don't like secretive deliberations. I prefer Obama's idea of having the discussions on C Span ie an open process. #2 - During the last 7 years, when Bush was in the process of war mongering, and dismantling our civil liberties, she said nothing. She had the standing and the currency to speak out. She was silent. This was a political calculation, that showed neither courage nor leadership. I think, in the same situation, Obama would have spoken out forcefully. He doesn't poll test all of his opinions. I hope the country will vote for him.

After 7 years of bloodthisty neo-con rule, people are desperate for positive outcomes and cling to hope. They cling too tightly to this hope, though, to the point of ignoring all else. Obama is a good speaker, and his speech-writer writes with the lofty optimism of youth. Nothing particularly wrong with that, but most of it is just abstractions, and have very little substance. They are ideals that rarely occur in the empirical world.
I want the trains to run on time. I want my daughter to have healthcare. (she's 33, and working) I want better education for our nations youth, I want less war and more magnanimity, more altruism. I want the concrete benefits of hard work and intelligent problem solving. I don't need government to inspire me. And neither should anybody else. It's not the function of government to "inspire," us. I am inspired by good results, from hard work.

Go pay taxes, balance a checkbook , live without mommy and daddy for a while and your perspective will change. Obama is no different than the others. He has gotten a free ride from an "inspired" media . Wait until the republicans get their hands on him . For partial birth abortion , take your guns away , more liberal than Ted Kennedy , questionable support of Israel , hypocrit on lobbyist reform , and the list goes on. The republicans won't mess around and Obama will stand up like a wet noodle.
