Sex slavery and Israel"s failure to fight the growing trade

Last year, the United Nations named Israel as one of the main destinations in the world for trafficked women.

Sarkozy's idea is not so much about the Holocaust as about his desire to have his personal ideas on any subject become The Official Versions.

Regarding the Holocaust, Sarkozy is personally concerned with the Jewish victims, not with the Gypsy or other victims, so French children will be forced to identify only with the group Sarkozy identifies with. (He can't extend it to Gypsies since he himself has passed laws making life more difficult for them specifically, thereby proving that if anyone has learned nothing from the history of WW II, it is he.) The article, by the way, mistranslates "Shoah" (the genocide against the Jews) as "Holocaust" (all genocides committed by the Nazis). Sarkozy could not care less about the Holocaust, he is interested only in the Shoah, and so that is what French schoolchildren must be taught.

The latest idea from the man we in France call the omni-president is to make children sing the national anthem in school while standing at attention. That may sound normal in the US, but in Europe it's a throwback to the destructive patriotism that caused WW I and WW II, and yet another reminder that Sarkozy's version of history is a highly personal one.

The only light spot is that Sarkozy has made himself so totally ridiculous these past months that no one seriously believes his whims will be translated into law, not even by a Parliament in which he commands a constitutional majority.

Still it's depressing to think that he'll be around f...ing things up for another five years.
