The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday recalled 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a Southern California slaughterhouse that is being investigated for mistreating cattle.

Officials said it was the largest beef recall in the United States, surpassing a 1999 ban of 35 million pounds of ready-to-eat meats.

The federal agency said the recall will affect beef products dating to Feb. 1, 2006, that came from Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co., which supplies meat to the federal school lunch program and to some major fast-food chains.

Once you've mastered blind indifference to the horror and suffering experienced by these innocent creatures, who live their sad lives at our mercy, it's such a small step up to the big leagues -- blind indifference to the horror and suffering experienced by innocent humans who look different, sound different and serve as a convenient target for the blind rage of so many Americans over 9/11.

Fire up the barby, knuckle-draggers... and try not to think. Your heads will explode.

"For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the Earth."Henry Beston

This meat recall is a national disgrace. When is the meat processing business going to realize that larger is not better? If cows were raised on a smaller scale, slaughtered, and packaged on a smaller scale the recalls would be much smaller. How can they absorb these losses?

I suppose hiring illegal aliens offsets the loss somewhat.

What does it take to change this? What they are doing is insane.

The real issue here is Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease CJD and mad cow disease which could be the reason the cows could not walk or were down. This is a disease caused by prions which you can't cook and kill, freeze and kill or nuke and kill. It takes a long time for the human to develop signs of the disease, up to 20 years, and it is uniformly fatal. This is the danger that those who ate that beef face and notice the government doesn't really address it. My physician husband and I (a nurse) only eat organic beef on the rare occasion that we eat beef. Do not trust the Agriculture Department to tell the truth. Eat little or no beef; it is better for you and planet earth.

Why is it that slavery of any kind is still considered acceptable? Even our pets are slaves. Mine are rescued and vegan, but anyone who calls themselves "pro life" or an "animal lover" is nothing but a hypocrite. The taking of any life, whether a sardine, spider or a cow, is murder murder murder. And I don't how many bible punchers have attempted to assauge their consciences by preaching to me about God condoning animal consumption. We don't live 2000CE we live in the 21st century and therefore MUST live accordingly - the cycle of murder and death continues daily in American culture and it begins in the slaughterhouses!!

be afraid... be very afraid.

this is no joke; when the brits announced that "mad cow disease" was in their cattle they took unprecedented action, slaughtering herds and notifing the entire world. what do we do? we push them through the abatoirs and feed the meat to an unsuspecting public.

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease is a chronic, degenerative disorder affecting the central nervous system of cattle.

Damn, another group of wacky environmentalists & peaceniks undoubtedly completely funded by the givernment lying about a situation, and the MSM becoming orgasmic about the lie.

Damn, what a broken record.

This is the tyupe of nonsense that got DDT banned, & look at the results.

Do-gooders are the biggest theat an average person faces today, and there would be very few were it not for givernment grants.

Thats right man, how dare those environmentalists and "peaceniks" protest the inhumane treatment of animals that are slaughtered and sent to unsuspecting people to consume.

As we "speak," there are millions globally suffering from starvation, blindness, slow death, lack of medications, etc. because of idiot "environmentalists" like these morons who inhibit & in many cases actually prevent the manufacture & distribution of foods & medical supplies worldwide.

JohnKemp -- You may have just posted the most idiotic remarks ever to go up at HuffPo, unless you were going for irony or sarcasm, but I doubt you were. As for your feigned concern below for the "millions globally suffering from starvation, blindness, slow death, lack of medications"-- what are YOU doing about that? My guess is the same number as your apparent IQ: 0.
