Bush: I "Don't Think" The War Has Anything To Do With The Economy

This morning on NBC's Today Show, President Bush denied that the there's any link between the faltering U.S. economy and $10 billion a month being spent on the Iraq war. In fact, according to Bush, the war is actually helping the economy:

CURRY: You don't agree with that? It has nothing do with the economy, the war -- spending on the war?

BUSH: I don't think so. I think actually the spending in the war might help with jobs...because we're buying equipment, and people are working. I think this economy is down because we built too many houses and the economy's adjusting.

Boy George was partly right: he doesn't think. Actually, spending money on the war is a dead end. If that money had been spent on infrastructure in the country then we would have created jobs and a lot more. As it is, most of the stuff we buy for soldiers in Iraq comes from abroad. He's screwed the pooch for a long time to come, as we're broke because of him.

I hate to say it...but for once BOOOsh is correct.

Producing WMDs is about the only growth industry left in this country.

And there you have it; our prospertiy depends on war.

And your correct about the housing market Georgie. It was your SEC that failed to reign in the mortgage and financial giants to prevent them from selling bad loans. Goodness what a legacy you'll have.

As far as he knows, the economy is just fine since all of Mr. Bush's friends are doing just fine. When he asks the carefully selected people he comes into contact with every day 'how'm I doin'?" they tell him "jus fine! - keep it up!" Our president has found his comfort level within his unreality bubble - there will be no change in course. The corporate war profiteers hope to continue the course by electing McCain who may not be so convenient a bubble-former as Bush, but is preferable to Democrats who may at least try to live in touch with reality.

If anyone still believes that Bush and his cronies are stupid, inept, backwards, moronic, dummies who just lucked into a good thing, then you haven't been paying attention!

When Bush invaded Iraq he didn't ask for sacrifice from the American people; he told them to go shopping! When Cheney watched Dick Nixon chased from the White House he swore one day to bring back the imperial presidency. When Prescott Bush was busted for trying to lead a military coup (google it!) against FDR, supporting eugenics experiments that became the basis for Hitler's Master Race idea, and doing business with the Nazi all through the war, His Plan for a fascist state in America was postponed, but not destroyed.

I agree that most folks here are fairly simple minded and easily brainwashed. And the brainwashing starts at the Top! It's consistent, loud and ongoing. People don't just wake up one morning and say, "gee, I think I'll get upside down in debt today." These fascists, the Bush's and their allies, have been at this for over 70 years.

It seems easier to blame us, the public, for all the problems we face. But the public hasn't dismantled the Constitution, stolen our rights, bombed two sovereign nations, or created the economic meltdown. That was Bush, Gonzales, Cheney, Ashcroft, Greenspan and the Fed! Right from the top, down to us. Yes, we've stood by and watched BECAUSE we couldn't believe that a conspiracy? plan? agenda, like that could possibly be anything but an accident. This is, after all, America, right? Not some 3rd world backwater. And the corporate masters of our government, Bush's real bosses, depended on that.

So, yes, I know that what we are facing now is no accident; not the fault of the people who just want to believe that their country wouldn't sell them out. Again, read Naomi Wolf's book, and Sirota and Greg Palast! Bush may look like a chimp, but he's the bloodiest, most ruthless chimp in the tree and deserves more credit than he is given here for his ferocity.

Wonder what your hero has to say about the troubles in West Africa other than hollow platitudes and useless abstinence programs:

Conspiracy. Definition: Two or more people get together and agree to commit a crime.

People are convicted of "conspiracy to commit a crime" every day in American courts of law. So if two knuckleheads can get together and agree to knock over the corner liquor store, why can't a few wealthy inbred knuckleheads get together and agree to subvert a democracy?

Or didn't you read Machiavelli's THE PRINCE in high school?

The first three words of the president's response ways it all, so there was not reason for him to add anything else.

Sumocat, you agree that the war has nothing to do with the economy? Do we need a little reality check?

You're right--war is traditionally an economic stimulus for most countries--look at germany during the Nazi era. But I imagine that if you were to slowly explain to say, you average 5th grader, how Bush pushed through massive tax cuts during a time of war, your average 12 year-old would say something like, "This doesn't make sense. How are they going to pay for all of this while still cutting taxes?"

It's insane economics, and I'm not sure, but it might very well be the first time this country has seen tax cuts during a time of full-out war.

I think George showed us what a consummate economic professional he was the day after 9/11 when one day after oe ofthe worst tragedies in the history of this country. W, in all his wisdom and leadersdhip. drew himself iup to his full height and...exhorted the American public
to keep shopping. Now that's leadership! I had a 16 year-old nephew visiting from Holland at the time, and even he raised an eyeborw when he heard that one.

Actually, I detailed quite clearly how the war is linked to the economy, but it is keeping it afloat, not dragging it down. If you'd bothered to read through to the end, you'd notice I compared the economy to a hot air balloon full of holes. Instead of patching the holes, Bush is increasing the hot air, which is effective in the short-term but does nothing to solve the root problem and could exacerbate it.

For a change, I agree with W. that the war itself is not to blame for the failing economy. First, war is traditionally economically stimulating. Second, I believe this two-front war is the only thing keeping the economy from sliding into absolute ruin under the gross mismanagement of the Bush administration.

Unemployment is relatively low because soldiers and reservists are being kept out of the workforce, and many times more contractors and support workers are necessary for maintenance. In keeping these people employed, a ton of extra money is being circulated, which is helping the economy, albeit at incredible cost to the taxpayers and without tangible benefit compared to spending that money at home to, say, upgrade our infrastructure or rebuild a destroyed city. It is highly inefficient, but the sheer volume of money involved has kept us afloat.

Unfortunately, all this extra money is borrowed, not earned, not unlike the money involved in the housing market crunch. That, to me, is the real problem. Strengthening the economy by funding a war is grossly inefficient (especially under the inept management of the administration), but there is no upside to funding it on credit.

W is keeping the economy afloat through volume not efficiency. It is a hot air balloon full of holes. Instead of patching the holes, he's increasing the hot air. It works in the short-term, but the holes continue to grow and the fuel supply continues to shrink.

So much for the first President with an MBA. Maybe he didn't show up for the econ classes.

Countdown to November! Bye Bush and Company!

I can not believe that George Bush continues to show his face publicly with his continued "Babel", with the immense suffering he has dispensed upon the world.

My only comfort comes in fact only one more year to endure this man and that hopefully after he is gone, Historians will show "The Real George" just as Germany had to face the "The Real Adolph"!

Hopefully down the road no one will every elect any Oil Bush Man again!

Bush also claims the oil economy has nothing to do with going to war.

It is another stupid assertion by Bush, made for the ignorant and gullible.
