Clinton Obama Copy

The two Democratic presidential campaigns traded accusations on Monday that each candidate had lifted language from other politicians, with a Clinton official going so far as to accuse Sen. Barack Obama of plagiarism.

The heated rhetoric came after segments of speeches from Obama and Massachusetts Gov. Devall Patrick were posted back-to-back on YouTube by a "rival campaign." In the clips, both men use nearly identical language when discussing the power of words.

Obama: "Don't tell me words don't matter. 'I have a dream' -- just words? 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal' -- just words? 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' -- just words? Just speeches?"

Patrick: "'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal' -- just words? Just words? 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' -- just words? 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' Just words? 'I have a dream' -- just words?"

The Obama campaign denied anything nefarious, noting that the two men are friends and political supporters of each other and that the line was, in fact, ad-libbed.

The Clinton camp, however, jumped right on the issue arguing that the use of someone else's language was telling for a candidate who leans so heavily on his oratory. The debate - aided, in part, by a relatively slow news day - culminated in dueling conference calls at 11 am on Monday morning.

"The issue whether or not there is approval is immaterial. The public did not know that the words had come from Gov. Patrick," said Clinton's spokesperson Howard Wolfson. We need a president, added Massachussetts Rep. Jim McGovern who is "not just someone who can copy someone's homework."

Moments later, Wolfson, in a separate interview with Politico, described Obama use of Patrick's earlier speech as "plagiarism."

In response to the charges, the Obama camp took a two-prong approach: downplaying the political significance of the language lifting and making the case that Sen. Hillary Clinton, herself, had borrowed lines from Obama.

"Throughout our history there have been moments where leaders have inspired the country through words," said campaign manager David Plouffe on a conference call with reporters. "We think at the end of the day this is another effort by the Clinton campaign to create distractions." This is, he added, "a curious charge from Sen. Clinton who repeatedly throughout this campaign has used words that Sen. Obama has used."

As evidence, Bill Burton, Obama's press secretary, sent out several memos in which Clinton uttered such Obama catchphrases as: "Yes We Can," and "Fired Up And Ready To Go."

Throughout the back-and-forth a secondary debate raged as to exactly how important the whole episode was.

On one hand, Peter S. Canellos wrote in the Boston Globe, the use of lofty rhetoric - either lifted or original - can create rousing expectations that suffocate a politician.

"Except that when it comes to the actual substance of issues, there's no special agenda attached to the politics of hope. Both Patrick in 2006 and Obama this year have websites full of positions on the issues, but they're not easily distinguishable from those of other Democrats. The issues tend to get lost in the language of hope, perhaps because they sound and feel routine, and don't strike an inspirational chord."

On the other, as Obama noted in a press conference later on Monday, workers in Ohio couldn't care less about one segment in a lengthy speech.

"[Patrick] has occasionally used lines of mine. I have occasionally used some words of his. I know Sen. Clinton has used words of mind as well. I don't think that is something that workers here are concerned about." Obama added that he should have credited Patrick, but said in the end, "I really don't think this is too big of a deal."

This is such a non-issue. But Hillary has taken the eyes off her struggling campaign and shortcomings.

The Clintons will stop at nothing to get back in the White House. Their know no bounds. Dubya and Rove has cleared a trail the Clintons are only to happy to follow.

The hypocrisy of Clinton supporters giving the plagiarism and sexism allegations merit while ignoring scandal accusation after accusation against their own candidate is priceless.

"Your guy is evil because he said my candidate has claws! He also paraphrased a speech from a friend who gave him license to use his words!

Clinton is the definition of integrity! Pay no attention to the fact that her brothers received hundreds of thousands of dollars from people Bill Clinton pardoned. Pay no attention to video that shows Hillary was complicit in campaign finance fraud during her first senate run. Ignore the fact that it is mathematically impossible for the 5 million dollars she donated to her campaign to have come form her books sales when you consider a 40% tax! It's all Rovian lies!

OMG Obama is such a plagiarizer!"

i tried to warn all those hillary supporters this morning that her campaign immediately recalled their plagiarism charge, because they knew that with a little digging obama campaign could easily find a similar circumstance.
i will say again, this is a non-issue.
but i must admit some of these posts are humorous.
you would think they had video of obama in 3some with a goat and a horse

OBAMA is an empty suit with oratory skills into which Americans can pour their fears, remorse, hopes and dreams no matter what they are.

I chose to vote experience and removal of the glass ceiling for woman in America. There is nothing so special about America that a woman can't lead and run the country.
Obama's time will come after he gets some experience.

Furthermore, while Obama is out busy Plagerising and giving insppirational talks; Condelezza Rice is in his home country demonstrating experience and trying to solve the Kenyan mess!

Be mindful of the Rice wild card during these times of Obamamania and Hillary bashing people!

What experience? Being First Lady? Being a Senator from NY? What world issue has she ever solved? What domestic issue other than her constituents in NY would have received has she solved? She has a few more years in the Senate than does Mr. Obama. That doesn't say much at all, because if it did, we'd have to concede to McCain!

Senator Obama has shown at the very least CLASS during all of this campaign, unlike Clinton. He has shown this class during all of the attacks, and his record shows integrity, ethics....something Clinton again has to deflect attention away from a lot of questionable actions and behavior (look up the FALN pardons among many issues).

This should not be a vote because we need to "lift the glass ceiling" for women. This should be about who is best to take this country back to the ideals we claim to represent. The politics of usual have proven beyond a doubt to have been failing for years and have left us in a horrible crisis at home and in the world.

There are First Ladies and then there are FIRST Ladies.

The general consensus is that Senator Clinton was heavily involved in President Clinton's administration by interacting and advising President Clinton on many policy and other decisions for "8" years.

As an intelligent woman, I'm sure she was very instrumental in many of his decisions, and her first hand experience has made her that much more of a prepared President on "DAY ONE".

This, plus her Senatorial background just adds to her preparedness.

My concern with Senator Clinton lies more with her ties to Washington and lobbying groups - not her lack of experience.

Try having a little respect for those who suffered and bled for your right to say stupid things.

Thank you. There's plenty of reason not to vote for Sen McCain without disrespecting his military service and horrific suffering. His notion that it's really important for judges to be Christian, for example.

A the level at which Obama is operating Plagiarism is prima facie evidence of a serious and massive not to mention an irreversible character flaw!

To minimize Obama's failure to devulge the origin of his remarks is enough to vote with Hillary and experience.

Character matters! If you hate female leadership, it doesnt.

Why this free Pass from the media?

The media has vilified and magnified Hillary's missteps at every turn and given a free pass to Obama. They have given a free pass to his lack of specificity as to his programs, policy objectives if he became President. They plaster the tv screen with images of Obama and very little of Hillary Clinton. Moreover, they have remained muted on investigating the origin and the nature of large sums of money Obama's is raising in short order.

A black man in American can hardly find money for grocery for a week let alone raising mega millions and gazillions of dollars in seven days. :) something is up.

I defer to my mother's retort to me when I became mystified about things in life, and I said to her, something is up, "use your common sense and figure it out" so I say now. use your common sense America! something is up!

Commonsense suggest Wisconsin, Texas and Ohio and all other states should vote for Hillary simply because something up and nothing makes sense!

How much more pathetic can HRC and her supporters get? Their ideas and their platform won't win them any votes. HRC can't inspire anyone to vote for her. All she and her supporters have left are weak attacks against Obama. The kinds of attacks that you witness in a high school election. Meanwhile, the attacks are laced with so much hypocrisy, that's it's becoming impossible to tell whether Hillary is actually trying to win or lose this thing. I mean, I've seen her, on several occasions, take what works for Barack and use it in her stump speech. Was Hillary REALLY the candidate for 'change' before Iowa? Was she? She's used her husbands material, John Edward's material, and of course Barack's. There is nothing original about Hillary... one can almost choke on the irony. So keep up the dumb attacks HRC supporters - the end is near for you - and we are witnessing the last angry gasps of a dying group of over-entitled power-hungry folks, who honestly believed that in this most important of times, the nomination was simply going to be handed to them. They weren't prepared for a fight, so now they are just trying to keep from drowning. Fear not, it'll all be over soon.
