I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Clinton Obama Copy

The two Democratic presidential campaigns traded accusations on Monday that each candidate had lifted language from other politicians, with a Clinton official going so far as to accuse Sen. Barack Obama of plagiarism.

The heated rhetoric came after segments of speeches from Obama and Massachusetts Gov. Devall Patrick were posted back-to-back on YouTube by a "rival campaign." In the clips, both men use nearly identical language when discussing the power of words.

Obama: "Don't tell me words don't matter. 'I have a dream' -- just words? 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal' -- just words? 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' -- just words? Just speeches?"

Patrick: "'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal' -- just words? Just words? 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' -- just words? 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' Just words? 'I have a dream' -- just words?"

The Obama campaign denied anything nefarious, noting that the two men are friends and political supporters of each other and that the line was, in fact, ad-libbed.

The Clinton camp, however, jumped right on the issue arguing that the use of someone else's language was telling for a candidate who leans so heavily on his oratory. The debate - aided, in part, by a relatively slow news day - culminated in dueling conference calls at 11 am on Monday morning.

"The issue whether or not there is approval is immaterial. The public did not know that the words had come from Gov. Patrick," said Clinton's spokesperson Howard Wolfson. We need a president, added Massachussetts Rep. Jim McGovern who is "not just someone who can copy someone's homework."

Moments later, Wolfson, in a separate interview with Politico, described Obama use of Patrick's earlier speech as "plagiarism."

In response to the charges, the Obama camp took a two-prong approach: downplaying the political significance of the language lifting and making the case that Sen. Hillary Clinton, herself, had borrowed lines from Obama.

"Throughout our history there have been moments where leaders have inspired the country through words," said campaign manager David Plouffe on a conference call with reporters. "We think at the end of the day this is another effort by the Clinton campaign to create distractions." This is, he added, "a curious charge from Sen. Clinton who repeatedly throughout this campaign has used words that Sen. Obama has used."

As evidence, Bill Burton, Obama's press secretary, sent out several memos in which Clinton uttered such Obama catchphrases as: "Yes We Can," and "Fired Up And Ready To Go."

Throughout the back-and-forth a secondary debate raged as to exactly how important the whole episode was.

On one hand, Peter S. Canellos wrote in the Boston Globe, the use of lofty rhetoric - either lifted or original - can create rousing expectations that suffocate a politician.

"Except that when it comes to the actual substance of issues, there's no special agenda attached to the politics of hope. Both Patrick in 2006 and Obama this year have websites full of positions on the issues, but they're not easily distinguishable from those of other Democrats. The issues tend to get lost in the language of hope, perhaps because they sound and feel routine, and don't strike an inspirational chord."

On the other, as Obama noted in a press conference later on Monday, workers in Ohio couldn't care less about one segment in a lengthy speech.

"[Patrick] has occasionally used lines of mine. I have occasionally used some words of his. I know Sen. Clinton has used words of mind as well. I don't think that is something that workers here are concerned about." Obama added that he should have credited Patrick, but said in the end, "I really don't think this is too big of a deal."

Hillary was saying she was "Fired up and ready to go"...... about one week after Obama said exactly the same thing. Hillary's surrogates have been parotting McCain's fallacious argument over Obama accepting public campaign financing.

All politicians borrow lines from eachother, they are worst than stand-up-comics in that respect, which is why this attack is so silly.

Obama's already on record as admitting he borrows lines from Patrick (and vice versa). Stumping in New Hampshire last December, Obama said:

"But you know in the end, don’t vote your fears. I’m stealing this line from my buddy (Massachusetts Gov.) Deval Patrick who stole a whole bunch of lines from me when he ran for the governorship, but it’s the right one, don’t vote your fears, vote your aspirations. Vote what you believe."

Clinton has been using rhetorical flourishes reminiscent of Obama lately. Here's a recent example from her speech at the Jefferson Jackson dinner in Richmond, VA, Feb. 9:

"I am ready to make your case, because your voices are the change we seek," she said, echoing a similar line from Obama's Super Tuesday speech in Chicago: "We are the ones we've been waiting for, we are the change we seek."

Does Hillary really want to travel down this road? Does she think that Obama's voters who her supporters call "messiah" worshipers will actually come out and vote for her after she crucifies their savior? Blacks? Young people who are voting from 2-1 to 4-1 in support of Obama?

Does she think that Democrats in red states that could swing blue will come out to support her after she denigrates their caucus voting process because she's losing their vote in the primary?

Such stupid campaigning. Shamelessly stupid!

The Clinton's are going to destroy this party and put another Republican in the oval office. I can only imagine how nasty Thursday's debate will be. Hillary on the attack -- and desperate -- is not a pretty site. I was a major fan/supporter of Bill Clinton since he first ran for office. Today was the first day that I actually thought I might not vote in November, (and I have never not voted)-- if Hillary is our nominee. And I'm hearing from other friends here in Calif. and in NY the same thing.

her handlers had backed off of the accusation of plagiarism by mid-afternoon. i am sure they did some homework and realized that hillary has done the same. all friggin pols do this.
but hey lets focus on obamas speach, that will certainly help fix the economy, as well as end the war in iraq.
petty, petty, petty.
this does not help hillary, i would fire every top dog in her staff at this point.

Nonsense, they made their point. Got YOU thinking.

And that's all that is needed.

When Obama was head of the law review, he did not publish a word. That's unheard of, btw. That was an opportunity to show off his stuff. Not a word.

He never wrote a single article when he taught. I had always thought even his resume was thin.

Your Obama is just NOW being vetted.

And he's coming up looking pretty darn bad right now.

This week alone:

The Man of Words isn't using his own words.
The Man who calls out that super-delegates are unAmerican and trying to steal the vote from people is found to have tried to buy them to the tune of nearly 700,000 bucks and 4 times his opponent.
The man who looked so honest and told America that he only worked 4 hours for Rezko actually made a sweetheart deal on a piece of property.
The Man who asserted that he would "aggressively" try to reach a deal with his Republican counterpart in using federal campaign financing now says he doesn't really know if he meant that after all.
The Man who is all about Change in America and building bridges is caught blatantly threatening AA superdelegates with the race card.

It's starting to pile up here.

He was unknown. A lot of us told you that he was just a politician.

The vetting that needed to happen early on just didn't happen.

So stop complaining. He was never going to remain unknown.

If you're not happy with what you're seeing, that's too bad.

The Pope of Hope has been taken down a notch by his own sloppiness and carelessness.

Does Hillary really want to open up this line of attack? Consider:

Hillary Ghostwriter Controversy re It Takes A Village

Clinton has been criticized for not giving credit to a ghostwriter in connection with It Takes a Village. The majority of the book was reportedly written by ghostwriter Barbara Feinman. When the book was first announced in April 1995, The New York Times reported publisher Simon & Schuster as saying "The book will actually be written by Barbara Feinman, a journalism professor at Georgetown University in Washington. Ms. Feinman will conduct a series of interviews with Mrs. Clinton, who will help edit the resulting text."

Feinman spent seven months on the project and was paid $120,000 for her work. Feinman, however, was not mentioned anywhere in the book. During her promotional tour for the book, Clinton said, "I actually wrote the book ... I had to write my own book because I want to stand by every word." Clinton stated that Feinman assisted in interviews and did some editorial drafting of "connecting paragraphs", while Clinton herself wrote the final manuscript in longhand.

This led Feinman to complain at the time to Capitol Style magazine over the lack of acknowledgment. In 2001, The Wall Street Journal reported that "New York literary circles are buzzing with vitriol over Sen. Clinton's refusal, so far, to share credit with any writer who helps on her book." Feinman agrees that Clinton was involved with the project, but also states that, "Like any first lady, Mrs. Clinton had an extremely hectic schedule and writing a book without assistance would have been logistically impossible." Feinman reiterates that her only objection to the whole process was the lack of any acknowledgment. A 2005 Georgetown University web page bio for Barbara Feinman Todd states that It Takes a Village was one of "several high-profile books" that she has "assisted, as editor, writer and researcher."

Good point. If it's such a matter of PRINCIPLE to Hillary that people must give credit for words where it is due, then she should have at least acknowledged the role Feinman played in writing her book.

Hillary didn't just borrow a friend's few words. She took credit for a complete BOOK that she didn't write herself.

As for the "ghostwriter" argument, "ghostwriter" is just a nice word for paying someone so you can take all the credit for their work. She didn't HAVE to use a ghostwriter. She could have given Feinman credit as co-author, if she REALLY feels strongly about not taking credit where it's not due.

(Of course, let's not be naive since she obviously DOESN'T care about the "principle" here at all--and can't even say that she's never "plagiarized" anyone--only that, in her case, it wouldn't matter.

No, this was just another Rove-inspired tactic to get bad press for your opponent on election eve. Hopefully, it won't work).

FISA UPDATE

A good current article on FISA.

http://firedoglake.com/2008/02/18/why-isnt-fisa-enough/

Talking Points Memo has several articles worth your time, this is one:

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/02/todays_must_read_278.php

People, Congress is on break, which means that your Rep is in your district all this week. He/she will be holding forums and town-hall meetings. You need only call their district office and find out when and where. There will several opportunities.

The battle will be rejoined next week, and the fascists will come gunning for the House. They need a backbone injection, and only YOU can deliver on that.

The House RESTORE act is the only acceptable bill under consideration. Nothing from the Senate should be allowed within a country mile of the constitution.

Telecom immunity is an abhorrent run for cover by BushCo. You must stand up and fight.

Please find your congressman and give him what-for.

'i am fired up and ready to go'
'american solutions' [from newt gingrich]
'it takes a village' [from children's defense fund]
'take back america' [from pat buchanan's pres. run]

this is the level of desperation and dishonesty of the clinton campaign...to call obama a plagiarist (though he had permission to use the essence of gov. deval's earlier speech) while herself using other politicians' lines with regularity. desperate and hypocritical, as usual. she can't discuss the issues, she's losing...and there's a reason why: we are sick of it!!!!

I'm not shocked that Obama lifts phrases he likes--he's politician, that's what they do.
I'm sorry his supporters get so stressed when someone deigns to criticize him. I know how hard it is to worship a god, then find out he's just another human being after all.
When Obama's fans stop treating him like he's spun from sugar, maybe he will stop whining about his hurt feelings all the time and man-up a little.

Just another indication of just how desperate she is. But here's the thing that truly upsets me and why I don't know I can even hold my nose and vote for her; I find it disgusting that she can't make an argument against Obama without attacking Obama's character. He has never attacked her on her character. In NV they accused Obama of voter suppression and intimidation, now he uses words from someone else in a speech and now she accuses him of plagiarizing -- both of which are serious legal allegations not to mention serious attacks on a Obama's character. And speaking of negative attacks, it's Hillary who is the one to strike first. The only time Obama goes negative is in defense -- I dare one of her supporters out here to prove I am wrong.

In college, if you give a speech in an academic setting, and don't provide proper attribution, you can potentially be expelled from the university. Having expressed this, in Sen. Obama's defense, he got the o.k. to use his borrowed lines from Massachusetts Gov. Devall Patrick. In my opinion, it *is* quite a stretch for the Clinton camp to assert that Sen. Obama plagiarized his borrowed Gov. Patrick lines. But, having expressed this, it *is* fair to make the argument that in Obama's failure to properly give credit to Gov. Patrick's speech, further feeds the media narrative that Obama is not as authentic as well are all supposed to believe; Obama reads canned speeches from a teleprompter -AND- some of the lines from teleprompter red speeches *are* borrowed lines from different politicians speeches! It is all too easy to mention Gov. Patrick's name in Obama's speech, but in my opinion, the Obama camp is trying to feed the overly slick perception that Obama is the modern day JFK, and that his speeches are sooooo unique that people will be reciting Obama's speeches 20 years from now; a perception that is clearly too slick by half.
