I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Clinton Obama Copy

The two Democratic presidential campaigns traded accusations on Monday that each candidate had lifted language from other politicians, with a Clinton official going so far as to accuse Sen. Barack Obama of plagiarism.

The heated rhetoric came after segments of speeches from Obama and Massachusetts Gov. Devall Patrick were posted back-to-back on YouTube by a "rival campaign." In the clips, both men use nearly identical language when discussing the power of words.

Obama: "Don't tell me words don't matter. 'I have a dream' -- just words? 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal' -- just words? 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' -- just words? Just speeches?"

Patrick: "'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal' -- just words? Just words? 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' -- just words? 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' Just words? 'I have a dream' -- just words?"

The Obama campaign denied anything nefarious, noting that the two men are friends and political supporters of each other and that the line was, in fact, ad-libbed.

The Clinton camp, however, jumped right on the issue arguing that the use of someone else's language was telling for a candidate who leans so heavily on his oratory. The debate - aided, in part, by a relatively slow news day - culminated in dueling conference calls at 11 am on Monday morning.

"The issue whether or not there is approval is immaterial. The public did not know that the words had come from Gov. Patrick," said Clinton's spokesperson Howard Wolfson. We need a president, added Massachussetts Rep. Jim McGovern who is "not just someone who can copy someone's homework."

Moments later, Wolfson, in a separate interview with Politico, described Obama use of Patrick's earlier speech as "plagiarism."

In response to the charges, the Obama camp took a two-prong approach: downplaying the political significance of the language lifting and making the case that Sen. Hillary Clinton, herself, had borrowed lines from Obama.

"Throughout our history there have been moments where leaders have inspired the country through words," said campaign manager David Plouffe on a conference call with reporters. "We think at the end of the day this is another effort by the Clinton campaign to create distractions." This is, he added, "a curious charge from Sen. Clinton who repeatedly throughout this campaign has used words that Sen. Obama has used."

As evidence, Bill Burton, Obama's press secretary, sent out several memos in which Clinton uttered such Obama catchphrases as: "Yes We Can," and "Fired Up And Ready To Go."

Throughout the back-and-forth a secondary debate raged as to exactly how important the whole episode was.

On one hand, Peter S. Canellos wrote in the Boston Globe, the use of lofty rhetoric - either lifted or original - can create rousing expectations that suffocate a politician.

"Except that when it comes to the actual substance of issues, there's no special agenda attached to the politics of hope. Both Patrick in 2006 and Obama this year have websites full of positions on the issues, but they're not easily distinguishable from those of other Democrats. The issues tend to get lost in the language of hope, perhaps because they sound and feel routine, and don't strike an inspirational chord."

On the other, as Obama noted in a press conference later on Monday, workers in Ohio couldn't care less about one segment in a lengthy speech.

"[Patrick] has occasionally used lines of mine. I have occasionally used some words of his. I know Sen. Clinton has used words of mind as well. I don't think that is something that workers here are concerned about." Obama added that he should have credited Patrick, but said in the end, "I really don't think this is too big of a deal."

Why is it that so many people can't grasp these most basic words:

their/there/they're
your/you're
loose/lose

And, why is it that it's usually the ones who claim to be so educated ?

Just wonderin'.

The Clinton Campaign Just Now...
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/02/the-clinton-cam.html

In a conference call just now the Clinton campaign would not guarantee that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, has never used someone else's rhetoric without crediting them.
I asked Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson and Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass, if they could assure the public that neither Clinton nor McGovern has ever done what Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, did when he used the rhetoric of Gov. Deval Patrick without footnoting him. They would not.
In fact, Wolfson seemed to say it wouldn't be as big a deal if it were discovered that Clinton had "lifted" such language.
"Sen. Clinton is not running on the strength of her rhetoric," Wolfson said. http://trailblazers.beloblog.com/______________________http://trailblazers.beloblog.com/

Professor says if experience counts, Hillary should vote for McCain

David Davenport is a former president of Pepperdine University, where he still teaches public policy, and a research fellow at the conservative Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
He's bemused by Hillary Clinton's argument that she deserves the Democratic presidential nomination because she's so much more experienced than Barack Obama.
"Hillary Clinton says experience counts, but what is her experience, really?" he says in this short audio commentary for Townhall.com.
"Eight years in the U.S. Senate (compared to four for Obama and
22 for McCain) and eight years as the first lady.
"I asked my wife, who was close by when I served as a university president for 15 years, whether she felt prepared now to run a college. She correctly said, 'No.' "
If experience really counts, he concludes, "look for John McCain to be our next president."

I see Hillary supporters finally found their rallying issue, judging from their fervor here. It's too bad it's something so trivial and something their own candidate is arguably even more guilty of. It's really sad how HRC is willing to tear apart the Democratic party with her negative spin and lies in order to attain her lust for the highest office.

I think this is a fair attack against Obama. Using another's words without proper attribution is usually considered to be plagiarism. As I recall when Biden ran a long time ago, he got into terrible trouble for using a portion of a British politician's speech without giving him proper attributino (even though I think it wasn't intentional by Biden). As I recall, it almost derailed Biden's campaign. I don't know how important it will be for Sen. Obama. I think the media will need to look at if there is a pattern of this kind of behavior (taking others words without proper attribution) or not by Obama. If it is part of a larger pattern it could really hurt Obama. As I recall with Biden, there was another instance from law school of him being accused of plagiarism, so it all hurt him. If this is a one time thing with Obama, I don't know how big a deal it will be. We'll have to wait and see. But since Obama hasn't really been fully vetted yet, I'm not sure what will come out in the future regarding this issue.

If this is a "big deal" aren't you concerned that Hillary can't say she hasn't plagiarized from others herself?

Doesn't it bother you that she didn't even acknowledge the woman who actually WROTE "It Takes A Village"? That's REALLY taking credit for someone else's work.

Haven't you noticed that Hillary's been "lifting" Obama's phrases and making them her own? Don't recall her giving him credit. Don't believe she wrote her book, IT TAKES A VILLAGE, by herself, either. As opposed to Obama. And by the way, Obama & Deval are very good friends and have/had the same campaign manager, David Axelrod. And several months ago, Obama actually said he was repeating a good line he'd gotten from Deval.

Is it wonderful that Hillary's able to distract us all from the war, the housing crisis, expensive health insurance but creating such a SCANDAL! Pot calling the kettle black!

Obama, while an excellent orator, does not use unique language. His ubiquitous phrase, "Yes we can" is lifted straight from Cesar Chavez' United Farm Workers slogan from 1972. He's far from original, and he is pulling out all the stops to sell himself to the American people as an atypical pol. I think he has excellent handlers and speechwriters. I think his image is calculated down to the relentlessly off-center dimple in his tie. I am not convinced that the American people really know who he is. How does he write a memoir and hardly mention the mother who raised him yet focus on the absent father from a faraway country? Regardless of whether it's his or not, how long can Obama be allowed to get away with nebulous, feel-good rhetoric?

Obama has never written any of his speeches, why expect him to think up anything on his own? His speech writers are to blame for filching someone elses words.

We have a phrase in Texas for what the Clinton's have been doing this entire campaign... You can put your boots in the oven, but that don't make 'em biscuits... They are false and they oppress those who deserve to lead. Plagiarism is a serious crime. And no crime as been committed. She steals Obama's lines all the time. Are these people out of their minds to think the electorate is so stupid as to think what they are saying is valid or true? I despise the Clinton's now and although I do not speak for Texas I will say that.. in the Clinton's campaign the engine's running but there ain't no body drivin'..

What do they say in Texas when Mrs. Obama states the first time in her adult life she has been proud of America is when her husband ran for office and brought hope to America?

Hillary's desperation is so unbecoming.

I expected much more from her including her not

voting for Bush's War of Choice or AT LEAST admitting

her vote was a mistake.

The vote was her first major downfall and she hasn't

been able to recover.

She is an intelligent woman so I do hope that even

though she is devastated over her likely loss at

being the Dem nominee, she joins with the Party

for a November win.

Being nice could help to make her the country's

FIRST WOMAN VICE PRESIDENT.

Yeah, it was the Clintons fault that Obama gave a cookie cutter speech to a bunch of brainwashed worshipers.

Plagerism, does this mean that every single speech someone gives now, will have to be highlighted with footnotes at the end of the speech. Does this mean we can't quote past Presidents or great speeches or quotes, from MLK, RFK, JFK, Teddy Rooselvelt etc... I believe we will have to start a new War on Words.

To top it off Clinton also mentioned that Barak Flip Flopped on using Public Financing for the Presidential campaign, he hasn't won the nomination yet, this was a Republican John McCain attack, and now Hillary is using it from a Republican against a Democrat.

Bill is running his mouth again, this is what we can look forward to for four years if she is nominated. People haven't we had enough of this already, I am so tired of it.

These are Democrats running against Democrats, can't they just all get along and run a respectful campaign.

Hillary & Co. are DESPERATE!! They will stoop to the lowest level to win, and take the party down with them. Obama didn't do anything the rest of them haven't already done! Big deal!!! If THIS is what they win on, I will be ashamed of my country and I will NOT VOTE FOR HER. She can't win fair and square--EVER. She is worthless and after trying very hard not to trash her and stay above the fray, I can't help it. She literally makes me ill! I have already made up my mind that if Hillary is our nominee, I will still write in Obama's name. I will NOT give her my vote. Billary are shameful.

Patrick and Obama told the Boston Globe last spring that they often swapped speech lines.
This is a desperate attack by a desperate campaign in its last stand. Hillary is toast.

"Let's roll" famous because of 9/11 flight 92 was used repeatedly by Bush in speeches. What's wrong in using other people famous lines?

Another example on how we re not focussing on the important things. who cares!!

How about we ALL hold ourselves to higher standards and maintain our dignity after we have had such abysmal moments as a country for so long? I am not impressed with the garbage coming from both sides. It is childish and sad. Both candidates have so much to offer the country, yet are diminishing their value to those of us who are desperately seeking change from our current administration.
